Program Zoning - Vertical Stacking
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Thefunctionalrequirementsofthisstructurehavebeenverticallyconfiguredsothattheprimarylivingspacesthatbenefitmostfromnaturalcrossventilationandviewsareonhigherfloorsthanthosespacesthatrequiremechanical or limited ventilation.
The lowest level is essentially subterranean and contains storage and mechanical equipment. The space requires nominal ventilation and no mechanical heating or cooling.
The entry level includes the garage, bodega, and staff room, with plans for future music studio facilities. The music studio, because of its delicate temperature and humidity sensitive equipment, must be mechanically cooledanddehumidifiedinthishotandhumidenvironment.Thepowerforthisequipmentwillbefullyprovidedfor by the rooftop solar panel array. The staff roof is located at the NE corner where it is shaded by the surrounding rainforest canopy.
The next level contains the outdoor living and pool terrace, and the primary public living spaces. The living and dining rooms can be fully opened to capture the breezes and join the outdoor terraces as one continuous living area. The guest wing bedrooms contain windows on each side, allowing for cross breezes, and the library and TV room are situated on the shady NW corner that allows for screened openings on two full sides of the room.
The upper level contains the master bedroom suites and the most sweeping views from the interior spaces, whilethepublicrooftopterracehasuninterruptedviewsoftherainforestcanopyaswellasthePacificOcean beyond.
Thethreemainlivinglevelsfullybenefitfromthebreezesthatmoveupthehillsidewhiletheless-oftenusedlower levels are shaded by the forest’s foliage, diminishing their cooling needs considerably.

1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
In this tropical environment, the careful use of architectural features that modulate the warming effects of the sun are important tools in providing for comfortable living spaces. The lower levels of this house are naturally protected from the harshest solar gain due to the dense rainforest canopy that shields them from the sun’s rays.
Byvirtueofthesite-onasteepslopefacingmagnificentviews-theupperlevelsofthehousehavebroadeastern and southern exposures that must be embraced, creating the most natural setting possible. While the morning eastern sun is the coolest, southern exposure demands deep overhangs, provided by exterior covered walkways, that serve as the circulation spine on the two living and bedroom levels. Similar eastern-facing overhangs protect sleeping areas from the morning sun.
The house is fully shielded from the harshest western sun due to the steep slope and forested landscape that rises behind the house.
When open, the use of manually controlled louvers allow for cross-ventilation, and also serve to block out the sun’s heat when in the closed position. They can, of course, be positioned to provide a balance of the two.
The passive solar controls associated with the massing and siting of the house, the strategic placement of windows, and the use of overhangs and operable windows work together to allow the house to provide climatic comfort without the use of a mechanical cooling system.

Natural Cross Ventilation
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
The strategic use of movable window and door panels, custom louvered panels with built-in insect screens, and operable casement windows around the perimeter of this house allows for the Owner to control the thermal comfort of the rooms without the power consuming use of mechanical equipment. This in turn limits the pollutants associated with energy use, lessening emissions associated with power generation. In this case, fewer solar panels must be manufactured and delivered to the site.
These louvered panels can be adjusted to maximize view and ventilation, or to provide privacy and protection from strong winds. Integrated screens provide protection from insects when the panels are closed, but can be opened to maximize the connection with the outdoors.
When fully closed, the wood louvers prevent harsh sunlight from heating the home, but when partially or fully opened allow for cool breezes to reach the rooms.

Casa Torcida Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
A system of fully operable windows and doors make up a large portion of the perimeter of the living and dining areas, opening these primary public spaces to the adjacent outdoor terraces and pool. Used in conjunction with the aforementioned louvered panels and aluminum windows that are located within the more solid walls of the house, these movable panels unite the indoor and outdoor spaces and maximize cross-breezes that cool the house.
When closed, the glass wall panels shelter the interior from the elements, but when open, allow for natural crossventilationthroughtheentirehouse.Ineitherposition,verylittleartificiallightingisrequiredwithinthehouse. Coupled with the fact that the cross breezes largely eliminate the need for air-conditioning, the energy use of this house is greatly diminished.

White Roof Membrane
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Thehighly reflectivewhitemembrane roof provides significant energy savings to thehouse compared tostandardblackroofs.Itdoessobyreflectingthesun’sraysanddiminishingheatgainassociatedwithsolarenergy. Also, because it is non-absorptive, the material does not deteriorate due to UV exposure and intense solar heat, requiring less maintenance over the life of the roof.
ThewhiteroofmembraneprovidesahighSolarReflectanceIndex(SRI),whichisameasureofthematerial’sability to reject solar heat. Surface temperatures of darker membranes can be up to 90 degrees (F) above that of the ambient air; by using a white roof the heat gain and material deterioration caused by intense heat and UV exposure is greatly reduced. Since the material is incapable of absorbing and transferring solar heat through convection and conduction to the building and the local environment, it is a great solution to reduce the “heat island effect” of the built environment, and lowers cooling loads in the few spaces that require air-conditioning in order to preserve audio equipment. This roof is a large part of the reason why the house does not need air-conditioning in the majority of living spaces, and allows for the rooftop solar panels to fully cover the electrical demands of this building.
Lower cooling loads and energy requirements contribute to a decrease in ambient temperatures and a decrease in the emissions associated with power production. In addition, by reducing the “heat island effect,” the local microclimate is not impacted by an increase in ambient temperatures, an important consideration in the rain forest environment in which the house is situated.

Photovoltaic Solar Energy System
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS The SANYO HIP solar cell is made of a single thin crystalline silicon wafer surrounded by ultra-thin amorphous silicon layers. These panels use a blend of amorphous and crystalline silicon to deliver a high cell conversion efficiency.TheyalsofeatureMCconnectors/cablesthatarepre-wiredintoaconduit-readyjunctionboxandare equipped with factory installed bypass diodes to provide circuit protection. The anodized aluminum tubular frames are designed for top down mounting clips.
SANYO solar panels are ideal for grid-tie applications. SANYO offers a unique guarantee that their panels never produce less than the rated power output. These panels outperform their competition due to the fact that they maintain higher voltages at higher temperatures, which means more power and better performance. The result is one of the highest Performance Test Condition ratings per watt (W ptc). The HIP-200BA3 panel has acellconversionefficiencyof18.5%andapanelconversionefficiencyof16.1%.Highconversionefficiencyandlightweightdesignconservespaceandweight.Theoutstandingconversionefficiencyandhighpoweroutputofthepanelsaveapproximately20%ofinstallationspaceand,withfewersolarpanels,thereislessweight on the roof.
The 84 panels installed on this roof provide for all of the existing electrical needs of the house, including all lighting, appliances, pool equipment, plumbing system pumps, and air-conditioning equipment. Not only are the current residential needs of the building covered, but the system is designed to meet the future AC and equipment power needs of the future lower level music studio.
Use of solar energy, a renewable power source, eliminates the need to bring electrical power from Puerto Jimenez to this remote peninsula. By not bringing power service wiring parallel to the only road that serves the Matapalo community, this residence does not increase the likelihood of suburbinization and “urban” sprawl. Additionally, carbon gases produced by conventional oil or gas-based power sources are eliminated.

Solar Hot Water System
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Electricandgashotwatersystemstypicallyaccountforapproximately20%ofahousehold’sgreenhousegasemissions.Byinstallingasolarwatersystem,energyuseisreducedbyabout75%ascomparedtotraditionalsystems. In thisoff-the-gridhouse,useofasolarhotwatersystemsignificantlyadded to theviabilityofenergyself-sufficiency.
The evacuated tube system employed at this house consists of a glass tube with a vacuum inside and copper pipesthatareallconnectedtoacommonmanifold.Thisisthenconnectedtoaslowflowcirculationpumpthatpumps water to a storage tank below, thus heating the hot water during the day. Insulation in the tank keeps the water hot for use at night and the following day. The evacuation tube systems are superior to other systems as they extract the heat out of the air on a humid day, notrequiringdirectsunlight.Duetothevacuuminsidetheglasstube, thetotalefficiencyinallareasishigher and there is better performance when the sun is not at an optimum angle - such as early in the morning or in the late afternoon.
As heat rises, the hot water delivered to the tank from the solar collector is drawn from the top for use in the house.
When the temperature of the water exceeds 60 degrees Celsius, as is required to kill bacteria, a tempering valve reduces the temperature to about 45 degrees Celsius, in order to ensure a safe temperature at the taps.
Whilethesunprovidesthehousewithsufficientenergyandplentyofhotwaterformostoftheyear, extendedperiods of cloudy weather sometimes require a boost, provided by an auxilary gas booster system. Using a tanklessgaswaterheateristhemostefficientmethod, asboostingonlyoccurswhenhotwaterisused.Withan electric system, the tank is heated as soon as the internal temperature drops, requiring excess energy use.

1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Energy Star is the U.S. government’s international program that encourages the use of energy-saving consumer products. The Energy Star standards were established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as part of energy-saving and greenhouse gas reduction efforts. The specifiedproductsincorporateadvancedtechnologiesanduse10-50%lessenergythanstandardappliances. The components used in these appliances are of better quality and therefore have fewer mechanical problems, require less maintenance, have longer equipment life and extended warranties, outperforming unrated models. Energy Star appliances save energy, money, and help reduce greenhouse gases and air pollutants at the source.

Propane Gas
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Propane Gas is similar to natural gas in that it is a clean-burning, environmentally friendly fuel that can be storedsafelyintanksspecifiedforresidentialuse.Itrunssignificantlycleanerthanoil.Whencomparedtonaturalgas,propaneislessexpensive,moreefficient,andmoreversatileinitsapplication.Propanegasisusedinthishouseforcookingandforclothesdrying.Duetoitsoperatingefficiency,muchlessgasisrequiedto run the same equipment compared to other fuels, making it extremely cost effective. Unlike other fuels, most propane comes from North American sources, diminishing costs and emissions due to long distance transportation of the fuel.

Native and Adapted Species
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Using native species in this landscape helps prevent disruption to a fragile ecosystem and enhances the habitat for local species, helping to maintain and foster biodiversity. It also eliminates the need for irrigation, which would divert potable water from the house, diminishing of local water table levels.
After the reclamation of the existing structure, the only alteration to the existing landscape was the creation of a buffer zone surrounding the building to prevent snakes from entering the house. Aside from this minimal intervention, no foreign, un-adapted species were introduced to the site. Instead, the lower property was replanted with native or fully-adapted species.
This un-built landscape is not impeded on by an extensive non-absorptive hardscape, and water is allowed to percolate back into the aquifer. The “heat island effect” is decreased because the heavily planted landscape maintains lower ambient air temperatures while providing shade and aiding passive solar design. The owner benefitsfrompleasantviews, lessenergyuse, andcleanerair.

Water Reclamation System
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Virtually100%oftherainwaterthatfallsontheuppermostroofdeckofthishouseiscollectedthroughaseriesof roof drains and leaders that direct the water to a 74,000 gallon cistern located below the house’s northwest corner.Thecollectedwateristhenpumpedthroughoutthehouseandfilteredforeverydayusethroughoutthe home: drinking, cooking, waste water, and the pool. There is no need to tap into local springs or ground water as rainwater provides all of the house’s water needs.
As a result, there is no need for investment in municipal systems and the local aquifers are not diminished. Additionally, the collection of rainwater into this system lessens soil erosion and the deterioration of the site due to water run-off.
Because rainwater is being collected on the rooftop, it is important to the client that the water be as pure aspossiblewhenitentersthewatercollectionsystem.Inadditiontoitsheatreflectingproperties, theroofmembrane provides an impermeable surface that is microbe free, allowing the water that runs across this surface to enter the water collection system as cleanly as possible.

1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Theexteriordrivewayandparkingareasforthishousewerespecifiedaspermeablepaversthatprovideseveralenvironmentalbenefits.Thepermeablepaverspreventwaterrun-offbyallowingrainwatertobeabsorbedinto the ground and to replenish and maintain water tables in the areas in which they are installed. They also support erosion control, which preserves the natural landscape and prevents unwanted soil depletion and contamination of local waterways.
As an alternative to conventional concrete or tar driving areas, which are continuous sheets of an impervious surface, these pavers allow the rainwater to percolate through the voids in the pavers into the ground. In turn, this allows the rainwater to reach the soil and feed both plant life and the local aquifers. Chemical-free Pool Water
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
The pool at Casa Torcida is maintained as a clean, safe, natural, and pure refuge from the tropical heat through chemical-free, non-chlorinatedwater purification.Unlike toxic chemicals or saltwater pools, theCarefreeClearwater mineral ionizer eliminates allergies, odors, and irritation. This system also avoids expensive, damaging salt, chlorine, bromine, and other chemicals. Copper, silver, and zinc mineral ions provide an alternative water treatment that is both irritant free and safe for the environment.
Theelectronicwaterpurificationsystememployedhereautomaticallypurifies, sanitizes, andeliminatesalgaeinthepools.AsafelowDCcurrentlikethatofseveralflashlightbatteriesispassedthroughasetofcopperandsilver alloy anodes. As the water passes through the sealed chamber, metallic ions are generated to purify the water. The microscopic action of the ions with the algae and bacteria are twofold. First, the algae and bacteria aredestroyedthroughachangeintheirenzymeprocesses.Second,allthesechargedparticlesfloctogetherandthentheyaremoreeffectivelypulledoutbythefilter.
An occasional use of a non-chlorinated oxidizer is needed to help break down excess organic debris from suntan oils, rain, wind, etc. Because it is chemical free, this non-chlorinated oxidizer allows swimming shortly after application. Water balance is easy to maintain since the ion system is pH neutral.

Regional and Site-Sensitive Materials
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Regional Materials:
Cabinetry was fabricated in San Jose from trees originally harvested from the foundation area. All of the treespecimensthatwerecapableofproducingqualityhardwoodand/orveneerswerecarefullyharvestedand stored for future use. The timing of construction allowed for the wood to dry, be turned into lumber and fabricated into cabinetry and furniture.
Local species used for cabinetry include Cenzero, Ron Ron, and Cristobal.
Concrete materials and mosaic tiles used in pool were locally sourced.
Site Sensitive Materials:
All of the concretes, stuccos, and exterior stone, in particular the white quartzite used for the pool deck, were specified inas lightacoloraspossible inorder to reduce thenegative “heat islandeffect”causedby theabsorptionoftheabundantsunlightintodarkersurfaces.Thespecificationofthesematerialsgreatlyaidsineliminating the need for air-conditioning in the house by preventing the local micro-climate from heating due to the absorption of heat by the built structure.

Local Fabrication
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
In addition to the wood cabinetry, the custom-designed beds in the master bedrooms and the dining table are locally made. This avoids the necessity of transporting the furniture from distant locations, cutting down on the fuel required by additional travel, and the energy and the emissions required to produce the fuel. This contributes to cleaner air, lower costs, and support of the local economy.
In addition, the construction teams were housed on the site during construction, performing extended shifts. In order to produce a house of this sophistication in such a remote locale, most of the construction crew was from San Jose. By housing the builders locally, extensive daily travel to and from the site was eliminated.

Reclaimed Structure
1. ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
When SPG Architects was approached by our client to reconsider the incomplete structure that he had previously erected on a remote Costa Rican coastal hillside, the all-but-abandoned steel framework and concrete slab construction was already being reclaimed by the rainforest. However, the prior investment in time, materials, and money was considerable. Although the structure was beautifully sited, it needed considerable re-thinking to become a viable option, let alone a beautiful home. Salvaging the existing structure was not only feasible, but also the right thing to do for both the client and the environment. The concerns of accommodating the needs of the client and preserving the natural landscape shaped the design and construction process from the initial stages.
With footings, frame, and slab already in place, the greatest impact on the rain-forested site had already taken placebeforere-constructionbegan.Theexistinggeometryrequiredminorreconfigurationoftheperimetertoimprove the massing and appearance of the house. Sheer walls, bracing, and enhanced connections were required to reinforce the frame for seismic activity. Neither of these activities further degraded the site and only minor re-planting was required to return the site to a natural condition.
