Generalit General information
WireIt is the main component of thesteel rope and is obtained frompassing a wire rod through adrawing tool.The diameter of the wire rodgradually gets smaller until itreaches the set size andmechanical characteristics.The wire, used in differentapplications, can then begalvanised in a hot dipgalvanising bath.
StrandThe strand is done of a numberof wires laid helically around acentral wire.
RopeThe rope is done of a number ofstrands laid helically around atextile or metal core.Before laying the strands, theyare preformed to give them thehelical shape they will havewhen the rope is formed.Preformation offers the followingadvantages:a) when the rope is cut the
strands do not unwind and sothey do not have to be servedor welded
b) improved fatigue life of the ropes
c) the wires remain in position even if they break
d) easier handling, splicing, coupling etc.
To offer greater stability andcompactness, the preformationis not performed when specialropes are manufactured.

7Caratteristicheprincipali delle funi
Main characteristicsof the wire ropes
ERRATO / INCORRECT CORRETTO / CORRECT

The main characteristics of theropes are: Diameter and tolerances Construction and number of wires Lay Breaking force Metallic area Weight per meter Surface finish
Diameter and tolerancesThe actual diameter of the ropeis the diameter of the normalsection of the rope. It should bemeasured as shown below.
Two pairs of measurements,rectangular in two sections andat least one meter apart aremade. The mean of the fourmeasured values is taken to bethe actual diameter.These measurements aregenerally made on a straightsection of the rope, not subjectto tension.If high precision measurementsare required, the actualdiameter is measured when therope is subject to a tension of5% of the minimum guaranteedbreaking force.Acceptable tolerances areshown in the table below, inaccordance with EN 12385.
Tolerances of the length ofthe ropes (EN 12385)The difference between thenominal length and actual lengthof the rope (without appliedstress) is between the followingtolerance values:

Lay directionIn accordance with EN 12385 thelay direction always refers to thedirection of the external wirescompared to that of the strands(or spiral strand wires) and of thestrands compared to the rope.Z = right lay.S = left lay.In case of stranded ropes abovementioned letters are used withdifferent sizes. The first, smallerletter indicates the lay directionof the external wires of thestrands. The second biggerletter indicates the lay directionof the strands in the rope.

Rope terminology:characteristics and properties l Minimum breaking force
(shown in the catalogue)It is the breaking force of therope in kN obtained by breakinga sample of rope. Therequirement breaking force issatisfied when the value of theeffective breaking force Fminreaches or exceeds theminimum value.Note. The value of the min.breaking force is the only valuethat, divided for the safetyfactor, must be taken tocalculate the working load of therope or for the sling.l Minimum aggregate
breaking forceIt is obtained by multiplying thetotal cross sectional area of thewires and the tensile strengthgrade of the same one and it isused for design only.l Calculated minimum
breaking forceIt is obtained multiplying theminimum breaking force and thereduction produced by thespinning factor, as per themanufacturers design.
l Fill factorIt is the ratio between the sumof the cross sectional areas ofwires and the nominal sectionalarea of the rope based on itsnominal diameter.l Spinning loss factor (k)It is the spinning loss isgenerated by the winding of thewires in the strands and by thestrands in the rope.
Metallic areaThis is the sum of the straighttransversal sections of all wirescomponing the rope (calculationformula on page 16).
Unit massThis is the weight of a givenlength of rope.
Protective coatingsThe elementary wires of theropes are protected byappropriate lubrication.However, the wires of ropesused in maritime applications, inaggressive conditions orexposed to severe weatherconditions are galvanised.Wires are hot dip galvanised.Wires can be galvanised afterfinal drawing (finalgalvanisation) or drawngalvanised. In accordance withISO 2232, the amount ofcoating is expressed by themass of zinc per unit of wiresurface in g/m2.A heavy galvanisationB light galvanisation
Funi a trefolicompattati
Compacted strands
SuperficieSurface
Contatti lineariLinear contactsSpazi inutilizzatiUnused spaces
Superficie lisciaSmooth surface
Contatti estesiWide contactsSpazi inutilizzatiUnused spaces
Compacting of strand is a colddeformation process of thewhole strand and its wires,achieved by the passage of thestrand through a drawing tooland a pair of rollers.After the compacting processsignificant modifications of thewire shapes are achieved, asfollows: increase of the metallic areaof the strand; wider surfaces of contactbetween wires; smoother, more regular andless-permeable strand surface; more uniform distribution ofthe tension on wires; increased dimensionalstability of the strand againstside forces; possibility to produce ropeswith longer closing pitch, soobtaining a higher modulus ofelasticity.
Due to the advantages ofcompacting, the use ofcompacted ropes is widelyincreased in all sectors - mainlyin such applications wherecomposite stresses (traction-side pressure) occurr.Compacting is used to produceropes with higher load capacity(due to increased metallic area)and ropes working under highside pressure or abrasion (dueto stronger strength of strandsand larger contact surface).Furthermore, for the same ropebreaking force it's possible touse a lower tensile strength ofwires, so improving the ropeperformance regarding ductilityand fatigue resistance.
angoli di deviazione laterale sulle carrucole o tamburi;
carichi impulsivi.
Plastificazione Plastic coated core
Steel wire ropes with a metalliccore covered with plastic arecomposed by a layer of strandswound on a metallic core onwhich it is extruded a sheath ofplastic. A plastic filler drasticallyreduces potential sliding amongvarious components andprevents geometric alterationsof the ropes.The application of a plasticcoating has the followingpurposes: create a mechanical joint thatattaches the reciprocal positionsof the components of thesteelwire rope while allowingnecessary movement; reduce internal corrosionprocess due to reducedpermeability of the steelwirerope caused by pollutingagents; fill the free space betweenthe outer strands and the corein order to prevent wear.The following drawing displaysthe structure of steelwire ropeswith a plastic-coated metal core.The type of outer material usedallows continuous operation ofthe rope in a wide temperaturerange (-35C 90C) withoutdimensional alterations orfragile breakings.
The stabilizing effect induced byplastic coatings is especiallyevident when the rope isexposed to the following: transverse pressures; torsion caused by wide
lateral deviation angles on sheaves or winches;
shock loads.

Avvolgimentoparallelo Lang
Langs lay
Obtained stranding the wireswith the same closing directionof the strands in the rope, sohaving wires showing a veryinclined axis with respect ofrope longitudinal axis.Lang's lay dramaticallyimproves rope resistanceagainst wear and crushing. Thisadvantage is especiallynoticeable when the steelwirerope is wound in multiple layers,operating also more silently.
Funi antigirevoli Non-rotatingsteel wire ropes
All ropes, with the exception ofbraided ones, are formed byhelical laying strands. Due tothis construction the motion ofsuspended loads tends to makethem unwind.Rotation of the rope around itsaxis should be avoided as itsignificantly alters the geometricrelationships, unbalancing thestress distribution betweenwires and causing the blocks torotate until the ropes becometwisted.This phenomenon is reduced bynon-rotating ropes made oftwo or more layers of strandslaid in opposite directions.However, rotation can never becompletely eliminated becausethe alternating sections, eventhough very similar, are neverperfectly equal.Only ropes with a squaresection obtained by braiding anequal number of strands, halfwith right lay and half with leftlay, are fully non-rotating. Ropesdefined as non-rotating areideal for uses where the stabilityof suspended, non-guided loadsis required. They are specially useful inlifting operations where thedistance between the uppersheaves and sheave at the hookis great (e.g. tower cranes).

In these cases the rotationtorque can cause sections ofrope, which support the load, tointertwine, making manoeuvringdifficult, causing serious wear onthe rope as well as thepossibility of unexpectedbreakage.Non-rotating ropes areparticularly sensitive to damagecaused by incorrect uses andhandling.Recommendations regardingunwinding and socket anchoringmust be observed, especiallyduring assembly (pages 2325).The diagram below shows thevarious non-rotatingcharacteristics of the variousropes.

R = L F/Sdove: R rotazione [deg] fattore di rotazione unitaria
[deg/1000d Mpa]L lunghezza delle funi [mm]F forza applicata [kN]S sezione della fune [mm2]
For each special steelwire rope,the value of the torque () andthe value () relative to theangle of rotation of the steelwireropes should be 20% of theminimum breaking force.For practical reasons, thesevalues make it possible to fix therotation of a steelwire rope insingle-fall, or make it possible toverify the equilibrium of a blockfor systems with relevant liftingheight.In single-fall applications, therotation of the steelwire rope isproportional to the free lengthwhen the weight of the steelwirerope is disregarded:
R = L F/SWith:R rotation [deg] unit rotation factor

H = L D / 4 d dove: fattore di coppia delle fune []L distanza
Li = L (N-1) / N eDi = D (N-1) / N;
In applications with multiplefalls, the maximum lifting heightthat maintains the stability of thesystem can be calculated asfollows:
H = L D / 4 d With: torque factor of ropes []L distance between
the ropes [mm]D diameter of block [mm]d diameter of rope [mm]H lifting height [mm]
As in the quite commonsituation with L=D thenH = D2 / 4d, this shows howthe lifting height depends on thesquare of the dimension of theblock.In the event that systems aremade of branches (N) higherthan two, the following applies:- with uneven pitch: the value
Li = L (N-1) / N andDi = D (N-1) / N;
- with even pitch: L and D are replaced by the diagonals of the rectangle circumscribed atthe branches of the rope.

Caratteristiche diallungamento dellefuni
Rope elongation
allelasticit dellacciaio costituente i fili;
Elongation and elasticmodulusEach rope subject to traction issubmitted to two types ofelongation:a) elongation due to the
elasticity of the steel of the wires;
b) bedding of all the elements comprising the rope (wires, strands, core).
Bedding is permanent and finaland can be seen fairly quicklydepending on the intensity ofthe workload, composition andformation of the rope, with aslight decrease in diameter anda variable elongation of the laypitch and therefore of the ropeof between 0.2% and 0.5%.Steel ropes exposed to veryhigh values can stretch up to0.8% during their service life.Elastic lengthening of steel atthe approved work rates is,however, proportional to theload and is annulled when theload is removed.It can be calculated using theformula shown on page 17.Therefore, ropes with a lowerelastic modulus absorb stressescaused by shockloadingconditions more effectively, asmajor elastic elongation allowsabsorption of such stress. Onlyreference values of the elasticmodulus can be given becausein practice it varies greatlydepending on the ropeconstruction methods adopted.

The diagram shows the differentbehaviour of two ropes, one (A)subject to pre-stretchingtreatment and the other (B) notsubject to this treatment.
If use of the steelwire roperequires that permanentelongation can be ignored orreduced to a minimum it isnecessary to pre-stretch.This can be carried out in twoways:l static pre-stretching:is carried out at approx. 50%of the breaking force with aseries of load cycles,permanence of load for acertain time, and unloading untilcomplete bedding of ropeoccurs;
l dynamic pre-stretching:is carried out in line during theclosing process of the steelwirerope, with manufacturing of thesteelwire rope on a pre-stretcher positioned before thefinal rope lay, with a tensionthat, in general, is 1/3 of thebreaking force. In this case pre-stretching consists of tractiveforces and bending thatrepresents an actual break-inof the rope.

Diameter of sheaves andwinchesThe service life of ropes usedon sheaves and winchesdepends essentially on thecorrect dimensioning of thegrooves and on the correctchoice of ratio between thediameter of the rope and thewinch, normally called bendingratio.The applicable standards for thevarious applications provideminimum bending ratios. Inparticular, FEM set variable D/dvalues for winches, returnsheaves and adjustmentsheaves for classification of themechanism.Bending ratios which we believeensure optimal service life of therope are indicated below.l Operating winches and

Choosing the windingdirectionThe rope must be woundaround the winches uniformly. Itis vital that the rope wounds arelayed very close together on thefirst layer, without overlapping orcrossing-over the followinglayers with crushing of the rope.The winding direction of therope and rotation direction of thewinch has to be taken intoaccount as shown below:

Pressure of the rope onsheaves and winchesThe specific pressure applied bythe rope on the groove is afunction of the force applied tothe rope, the rope diametersand diameter of the sheaves.It is commonly calculated usingthis formula:
P =
where:P = specific pressure in daN/cm2T1 and T2 = rope stress in daND = sheave diameter in cmd = rope diameter in cm The value calculated in this wayis always lower than the actualpressure because there arerelatively few contact pointswhich vary depending on thetype of rope used.In order to obtain more accuratevalues it is necessary toconsider factor which mayvary according to the type of therope and on the specificapplication.As an example we have taken asix strand S10 type rope and annon-rotating A4L type rope with12 external strands.

Whenever a rope reaches asheave on which is woundedwith a deflection angle, it's alsoforced to torque on its axisbefore reaching the sheavebottom.
This mainly arises when thedistance between winch andsheave is too short.
Generally, the maximum anglefor special hoisting ropes shouldnever exceed 1.5 2 to avoiddistortion of the steelwire rope.
However, considering thepeculiar characteristics of ourrange of rope constructions, thetable below gives the maximumrecommended fleet angles, therisky ones and thoseunacceptable.

Durata delle funisoggette ad impieghiparticolari
Service life of ropesused for specialapplications
macchina operatrice: dimensioni pulegge e
Winding on small diametersand service lifeIn systems not subject toaccident prevention standardsor not inspected by expertcertification boards, at timessheaves and winches are usedwith relatively small lay ratios(D/d).In this case the rope is subjectto a load loss, which could bemajor, but above allperformance is worse due tofatigue phenomena.This loss increases as the layratio decreases and is moremarked in ropes with textilecore.
It is difficult to predict the servicelife of a rope because itdepends on many factors suchas:
l rope related variables: composition of type of rope external diameters lay pitch lubrificationl operating machine related
variables: dimensions of the sheaves
and winch materials condition of bearings or
bushings kinematic motionl work condition related
variables: rope rate work loads shocks or tears dusty environment temperature maintenanceExperience of operatingsystems and laboratory testshave shown that the service lifeof ropes used in ideal conditionsdepends essentially on the workload and correct choice of D/dratio which must never fall below16, even for the most flexibleropes.

Instructions forinstallation of wireropes
Winding and setting upThe ropes are supplied by themanufacturer wound around aspool, cross or wound intoappropriately fastened coilsdepending on the diameter andlength of the rope or upon thecustomer requests.If the rope is supplied on a spoolor cross, a rod of suitablediameter and length will bepassed through its central holeand two stands will be affixed atthe sides. Pull the end of therope to unwind it making surethat the rope does not loosen onthe spool.If the rope is supplied in a roll,place it on an reel and pull theend of the rope to unwind it sothat the roll rotates around itsaxis.If the roll is small the rope canbe unwound by keeping theexternal end steady on theground and unwinding the ropeby rolling the roll along theground in a vertical position.
Replacing ropes Before positioning a new ropecheck that the grooves of thesheave and winch have notbeen worn or deformed by theold rope. If so, the grooves willhave to be milled and restoredto their original state (see page19).It is extremely important tocheck that the sheaves rotatefreely without excessiveclearance; if needed, replacethe bearing or bushings.If the rope is wound around awinch (grooved or smooth) andthe rope is multi-layered, thespires of the first layer must bewound very tightly together,keeping the rope underminimum tension during thewinding operation so as to avoidoverlapping and anomalousoperation of the machine.If the old rope is used to pull thenew one through the varioussheaves in the system, it isimportant to ensure that anyanomalous twisting of the oldrope is not conveyed to the newone, causing irregular internaltension which could jeopardisethe service life of the new ropeor even cause the core to bulgeor come out.The ends of the two ropes mustnot be directly joined together(e.g. welding them together towith clamps). An object able toabsorb torsions should beplaced between the old and newrope (e.g. a section of fibre ropeconnected to the ends of theropes with clamps or rope-sock).

Fixed end attachmentIn general, it should be notedthat to preserve theirperformance, all ropes shouldmaintain their constructionparameters during operations.Therefore, their ends must beconnected to an attachmentwhich prevents rotations due tothe gyratory torque or inducedby the system.All lifting equipment must be ofthe correct size to contrast thegyratory torque of the ropesused so as to keep theequilibrium of the system withthe rope ends blocked.In the case of non-rotating ropesinstalled on tower cranes, theend must be attached to asheave only when the winchdoes not rotate with the craneboom.In all other cases sheaves canbe used only during the firstbreaking-in stages and thesheave must be blocked whenthe rope has achieved itsoperating position.If the system is not balanced,the sheave can be used torelease the torsion reactionscaused on the rope but thisunfavourably affects itsresistance and service life(ruptures, bulges, ondulationsetc.).
Adapting ropes to workingconditionsWhen a new rope is installed ina system it must be used for ashort period after its installationwith smaller loads than thoseenvisaged in normal workingconditions.In this way all the elementshave time to settle and adjust tonormal working conditions.If this breaking-in period is notobserved, the rope will besubject immediately toexcessive stress, at timescausing premature breakages orin any case it may result in ashorter service life.

Criteri di verifica esostituzione delle funi
Rope inspection andreplacement criteria
In compliance with ISO 4309,the operating safety of a rope isensured above all by correctevaluation of: number of breakages and
their position, wear of wires, internal and external
corrosion, damage and deterioration of
the rope.
Breakage of wires(according to ISO 4309)The broken wires that are visibleon the outside surface of the ropemust be counted, naturally takinginto consideration the most wornsection of the rope. The table below gives themaximum number of brokenwires allowed for a length of ropeof 6 or 30 times the diameter ofthe rope.The broken wires have to bechecked on both lengths; therope must be replaced if thenumber of broken wires exceedsthe indicated minimum even onjust one of the two lengths.

REMARKS: = nominal rope diameterThe filling wires are not consideredbearing wires and are therefore notincluded to the count.In multi-layered ropes and ropes withmetal core, inspection should be madeonly of the external layer.Broken wires must have two clearlyvisible broken ends.The values indicated are adapted to thetypes of ropes offered in this catalogueand are recommended on the basis of ourexperience. These values apply only toropes wound around winches andsheaves that are not coated withsynthetic material.When consulting the table bear in mindthat the wire breakage in 6 and 8 strandropes is greater in the external layers.This is not the case in the case in multi-strand ropes where breakage involves theinner part and so it is not visible.We recommend replacing ropes in thepresence of broken wires close to eachother, in a length of not more than 6 d orconcentrated in a single strand even if thenumber of broken wires is less than thatindicated in the table.
Wear of the wiresThe check of the rope for itsreplacement must take inconsideration, not only thenumber of broken wires. Theflattening of wires due to wearanticipates their imminentbreakage. In the presence ofworn wires, the time betweeninspections must be shortenedand the check of broken wiresmust take into considerationwires whose diameter is visiblyreduced by around 50%compared to the original value.
Internal and externalcorrosionExternal corrosion reduces thediameter of the wires.The indications in the paragraphabove apply also in this case,adopting even tighter criteria ofcaution because corrosioncauses more seriousdeterioration than wear.Evaluation of internal corrosionrequires expertise. Clamps canbe used to open the rope, with acareful untwisting manoeuvre(see ISO 4309).
