“This is an exciting new development in how to reduce compaction damage from vehicles and footfall to an ancient tree’s roots,
made possible by the generous donation by Geosynthetics in time, expertise and materials.”

Case Study
Cellweb® TRPHelping Ancient Tree Protection
Unfortunately, with increased compaction to the ground combined with a heavy footfall, the soil density on one side of the ancient tree have dropped below an acceptable level for the tree to survive. As a result parts of the tree had started to die back.
Geosynthetics Engineering Team and Arboriculturilst, James Gormley, was able to work with Brian Muelaner, the ancient tree advisor at the National Trust, to provide a solution to help save this historic tree.
A 90mm layer of mulch wood chip was firstly used as a sub base to encourage decomposers such as earthworms to help alleviate the ground compaction and aerate the soil.
A layer of Treetex®, pollution control geotextile, was then laid on top to act as a protection barrier and to avoid any pollutants affecting the roots.
Panels of Cellweb® TRP were then laid on top of the Treetex® and infilled with clean angular stone. The purpose of the Cellweb® TRP is to
reduce any further compaction whilst the decomposers naturally reduce the soil bulk density. The clean angular stone then finished the project by allowing water to move freely to the roots of the tree whilst being aesthetically pleasing to the natural environment.
This whole project was designed, supplied and installed courtesy of Geosynthetics. The Geosynthetics tree root protection team donated their time, knowledge and products to ensure that this tree will survive for generations to come.
‘The Old Man of Calke’ is Calke Abbey’s oldest tree and is thought to be up to 1200 years old. With the average large oak in Britain being up to 200 years it certainly is the ‘Old Man’ of oak trees. Put into context this means this tree would have been 200 years old when William the Conqueror arrived in Britain.
