An online course in relational data bases using the VAX 11·780 and BSD 4.2 UNIX.*
Relational databases play an important role everywhere in our society. The need to store information reliably and to generate reports accurately is found at all management levels, in business and governrnent agencies.
The online, UNIX based, course in relational databases has been designed to g ive you the experience you need to be confident in working with database management systems.
Taken from your home: lbu can take this course in
relational databases directly from your home. You will need a terminat or personal computer with appropriate communications software. You can start the course at any time and proceed at your own pace.
To improve your skills: lbu have only to access the
online course. A set of computer-assisted online lessons will help get you through the course in a planned and user-friendly fashion. You will also have access to computer conferences and online discussions with experienced professionals in the field of database management who are trained to work closely with students online.
Emphasizing practical experience:
lbu wi ll get "hands-on" experience by creating your own database. Each lesson will guide you, advising you how to create new relations, helping you to use the correct queries to retrieve the data you need, and generating all kinds of reports that you will see on your screen.
Features of the course: • You start when you want. • You dial a local Tymnet
number to connect to NOVA's computer, a VAX 11-780, using the UNIX operating system.
• You access an online tutorial on INGRES. INGRESlis a relational database for UNIX. It has extensive capabilities for collecting, accessing and retrieving data, using a query language called QUEL. The lessons on INGRES combine an extensive set of tutorials with instructions that tell you simply and clearly how to use INGRES itself.
·UNIX is a Trademark of Bell Laboratories
Topics: The tutorial covers the
following topics: • Accessing the INGRES
demo database • Using queries to
manipulate data fields • Using the editor to save
query commands • Designing and creating
your own database • Moving data between
INGRES relations and UNIX fi les
• Creating indexes, using heap, hash or isam techniques
Textbook: "Computer Database Organization" by James Martin.
Instructor: The course is taught online
by national consultant Jacques Levin, Ph.D., NOVA University, Center for Computer-Based Learning.
Format: • Computer-assisted
instruction online • Computer conferences
and online d iscussions • Electronic mail
Objectives: Participants who complete
the course will have the following capabilities:
• Competency in creating a relational database. Competency in using a query language.
• Competency in generating reports.
• Competency in database organization.
