LEARNING TARGETS

OVERACHING GOAL: to understand the interactions between animals and their environment.

LEARNING TARGET

* I can explain what symbiosis is and tell the difference of the 3 types.

ECOLOGY

HABITAT – where organism lives

NICHE – role in community

what it eats, where lives, etc.

POPULATION – group of one species

COMMUNITY – several populations together

INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ORGANISMS

1. SYMBIOSIS – living together

a. MUTUALISM

2 organisms living together where both benefit

EX:

Termite & protozoa

Bees/birds and flowers

Lichen – algae and

fungus

b. PARASITISM – one organism benefits, the other harmed

PARASITE – lives on another organism

HOST - organism the parasite lives on

EX: tapeworms

mosquitoes

fleas

c. Commensalism - one animal benefits and the other unaffected

PLANT ADAPTATIONS

EX:• Spines• Waxy leaves• Deep roots• Wide leaves• Covered seeds• Thick bark• Drop leavesTons more!

What are the 3 main types of interactions we talked about?
