The Great Wildebeest Migration of the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem
One of the most compelling and best known wildlife migrations in the world is the annual movement of millions of hoofed animals across the plains, hills and valleys of East Africa.
Life begins for these animals on the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti, but within a few short months of their birth, food supply begins to dwindle for these herbivore mega-herds and so a caravan of over a million wildebeest, a quarter of a million zebra, thousands of eland and half a million gazelle embark on an epic and dangerous journey in search of rain and food. This cavalcade is shadowed closely by Africa’s ferocious predators every step along the way...
This is the usual annual pattern the herds follow:
January – March: The wildebeest give birth on the short grass plains of south-eastern Serengeti. April – May: They move to the central and south-central areas of the Serengeti. June: They normally split up into two arms - one headed westwards towards the Western Corridor or Grumeti Reserves, whilst the other arm heads due north. July - October: They combine once again in July in northern Serengeti and about half of them cross over to the Masai Mara (the other half stays back in the Serengeti). November - December: They again start to congregate in the Serengeti in November and head back down towards the short grass plains in December.
Please note that these are all just rough estimations. Weather and rainfall patterns strongly affect wildlife movement and there is no guarantee that the animals will adhere to any fixed pattern.
