The DG DEVCO ‘Development Education & Awareness Raising’ (DEAR) Programme

• Unique in DEVCO: DEAR is the only DEVCO Programme

implemented in the EU: focusing on engaging Europeans

in global development

• Addresses global issues, such as Climate Change, through

informed local action

• Raises awareness of issues of the day, like Migration, in

support of democracy, human rights and the Sustainable

Development Goals

• Has a strong focus on stimulating Youth Action and

participation

DEAR in numbers

• Currently supports 33 projects (with 5 more to come soon)

mainly with Civil Society and Local Authorities

• In 2014-2017 DEAR contributed to

• empowering 4.500 Civil Society Organisations and Local

Authorities to work with the EU citizens on global development

issues;

• enhancing skills of 35.000 teachers to teach about climate

change, migration, responsible consumption and trade, food

production, etc.;

• building up skills of tens of thousands of young people to

actively support global change.

DEAR’s Two Streams of Action

Campaigning & Advocacy

• Projects that motivate Europeans for action, stimulate

behaviour change (e.g. in consumption) or policy

change (e.g. in companies and countries)

Formal & Non-formal Education

• Projects that focus on work with teachers, youth

workers, adult educators, education policy makers -

and learners -, to develop understanding and skills

relevant to global development issues and processes

Bridge 47 is one of 11 projects funded by the DEAR

Programme working in the area of formal and non-

formal education:

• building partnerships across the EU, amongst policy

makers and educators, to promote involvement with

the SDGs
