Subcontinent - large land mass, part of a continent
India is a subcontinent, and the 2nd most populated country in the world (China #1)
Geographic Regions of Southern Asia
Mt. Everest - tallest mountain in the world - 5 1/2 miles high
Ganges River - helps soil become fertile, carries rich sediment
Himalayas = Ganges = Flooding = Rich Fertile Soil
Irrigation - India has trouble moving water to farms
Delta - triangular deposit of soil at the mouth of a river
Mt. Everest... Would you climb it?

Archipelago - a group of islands, which includes Indonesia and the Philippines
Mainland Southeast Asia - major rice producing region and densely populated
Indonesia - many people farm, but most soil is poor - Huh?
Most islands in the region are uninhabited

Seasons - cool, hot, and rainy
Southeast Asia has less variety, it is hot and rainy
Monsoon - seasonal wind that blows over the northern part of the Indian Ocean
The two regions have different monsoon cycles.
