Your teeth make it possible for you to chew and grind food.

Your gums anchor your teeth in your mouth and keep them in place.

Tooth and Gum Problems

Tooth decay begins with the formation of plaque.

plaque A soft, colorless, sticky film containing bacteria that grows on your teeth

If plaque is not removed, it eventually hardens and becomes tartar.

Keeping Teeth and Gums Healthy

The three things you can do to prevent teeth and gum problems are brushing, flossing, and eating right.

When you brush, use a toothpaste that contains fluoride.

Regular Dental Checkups

You should get regular dental checkups twice a year.

If your teeth need straightening, your dentist may refer you to an orthodontist.

Healthy Skin

Your skin is the biggest organ of your body.

The two main layers of the skin are the epidermis and the dermis.

Skin Care

The most important part of skin care is cleansing.

You should protect your skin with sunscreen.

Mild acne can be treated at home.

For serious cases, you may need to see a dermatologist.

Healthy Hair

Your hair is made up of a substance called keratin.

The roots of the hair are in the dermis and are housed in pockets called follicles.

Tips for maintaining healthy hair include:

Wash regularly with a gentle shampoo and conditioner

Let hair dry naturally or use a hair dryer on low heat

Avoid styling irons and high heat.

Brush regularly

Common conditions include:

Dry scalp

Oily scalp

Dandruff

Head lice

To keep nails healthy:

Use a cuticle stick to push back the cuticle

Trim your nails using a nail clipper

Cut your toenails straight across
