Child and Family Outcomes Chapter 7: Developmental

Milestones Chart

A Brief Overview of the Developmental Milestones Associated with Each Outcome

Developmental Milestones Chart

The DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES CHART may be used to determine whether or not the child has the immediate foundational skills upon which to build age expected skills.

Meeting Developmental Milestones

A child may meet the developmental milestones expected of a child that is of the same chronological age.

When a child does not meet his/her age-expected milestone(s), it is important to determine whether the child has immediate foundational skills.

Immediate Foundational Skills

Immediate Foundational Skills =

The child has attained the developmental milestones expected of a child one age range below the child’s actual age, but has not attained age-expected developmental milestones.

A child who does not possess immediate foundational skills has not attained age-expected developmental milestones OR developmental milestones expected of a child one age range below the child’s actual age

The Three Child Outcomes

Outcome 1: Positive Social Emotional Skills (including social relationships)

Outcome 2: Acquiring and Using Knowledge and Skills (including early language/communication)

Outcome 3: Using Appropriate Behavior to Meet Needs (taking appropriate actions to meet needs)

What is the difference between the chart & the checklist?

The Developmental Milestones Chart is used to facilitate discussion of current developmental status at team meetings.

The Developmental Milestones Checklist is completed before the team meeting.

Outcome 1: Positive Social Emotional Skills

Outcome 2: Acquiring and Using Knowledge and Skills

Outcome 3: Using Appropriate Behaviors to Meet Needs
