PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES

Obesity means having too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her height.

OBESITY DEFINED

§ 17% of children age 2-19 are obese§ 14% are overweight§ Obesity has doubled over the past 30 years for preschoolers and adolescents§ Obesity has tripled for children ages 6-11§ The prevalence of obesity has increased in all income and education levels

CHILDHOOD OBESITY

§ 37% of high school students are obese or overweight

§ 29% of middle school students are obese or overweight

OHIO’S DIABETES EPIDEMICApproximately 1,334,918 people in Ohio, or 13.5% of the adult population, have diabetes.§ Of these, an estimated 286,000 have diabetes but don’t know it§ In addition, 3,071,000 people in Ohio, 35.3% of the adult population, have

prediabetes with blood glucose levels higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes

§ Every year an estimated 70,000 people in Ohio are diagnosed with diabetes

DIABETES IS EXPENSIVE:Diabetes and prediabetes cost an estimated $12 billion in Ohio each year§ People with diabetes have medical expenses approximately 2.3 times higher than

those who do not have diabetes§ Total direct medical expenses for diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes,

prediabetes and gestational diabetes in Ohio was estimated at $9.1 billion in 2012§ In addition, another $2.9 billion was spent on indirect costs from lost productivity
