What is Cited Reference Searching?

• Allows you to search for articles that havecited a specific published work

• Allows you to search the cited references(bibliography) of an article of interest

• Snowballing?!

Significance of cited referencesearching

• Finding current research based on earlierresearch

• Finding how many times and where apublication is cited

• Identifying who is referencing a paper• How is a research topic being used to support

other research• Impact of literature on other research in the field• Keeping track of your own research• Used for tenure

Significance of cited referencesearching

• Allows you to navigate forward and backwardin time, discovering relationships betweenpublished works– Find new, unknown information based on older,

known information– Find relevant articles in areas where there is not a

large amount of literature

• Find “hidden connections” between researchpapers

• Trace the historical path of a research idea ordiscovery
