Making Inferences

• Literature- Imaginative or creative writing. Ex: Fiction stories, poetry etc…

• Inference- a reasonable guess based on textual evidence and what you already know.

• Textual Evidence- facts, examples and other information from the text.

• Prior Knowledge- information you already know or was taught

Scenario• Think/Pair/Share: Suppose you read

a story and the character is frowning as she rushes around, opening drawers and looking under the bed.• Question: What can you infer based

on the characters actions?

Model• Let’s read a short article called, “Athena,

Arachne, and the Weaving Contest”.• Question: How does Athena most likely feel

about Arachne’s claims?

Discussion

• What happened to Arachne after the competition?

• Think/Pair-Share- The old woman said this statement to Arachne, “Spin and weave forever without my help, fool” . Why do you think the old woman said that to Arachne?
