Classroom Kits - Oral Health Lessons

BACKGROUND: In 1991, Colgate introduced Bright Smiles Bright Futures (BSBF), an oral health education and prevention program designed to improve the oral health of children. BSBF exposes eight million children and their families annually to positive oral health education. The primary BSBF Goal is to teach children and their families how to maintain good oral health and prevent dental disease. What is a BSBF Classroom kit? The BSBF Classroom kit is a “FREE” kit you can order online. The kit is designed for teachers (and Scout Leaders) to teach children under the age of 12 about Oral Health. The red box the kit comes in says “Kindergarten Kit”. Don’t worry about it. We have used this kit to teach the entire Pack. Activities for the rest of Pack are available. Feel free to reach out to Donna Manetta at (917)-609-8124 or djmscout@aol.com . Kits will be shipped by February 2016 in time for Children’s Oral Health Care Month. When you order your kit you can request English, Spanish or a combination of both. Kit comes with 25 sets of storybooks, parent information, toothpaste and toothbrush packets. When you order your kit make sure you specify the amount that you need. What’s in the Red Box?

• Storybook for each Cub Scout (English or Spanish)

• Animated Movie (DVD )

• Big Book for Cub Leader to Read

• 2-sided Poster “Know How to Brush”

• Teacher’s Guide Activities for the rest of Pack are available. Feel free to reach out to Donna Manetta at (917)-609-8124 or djmscout@aol.com .

What am I Supposed to do with the Red Box? 1) Start with the “Teacher’s Guide” - It will explain the components of the program

and how to use them. As you can see from the book‘s cover, the storyline is about Dr. Rabbit and the Tooth Defenders.

2) Hang up the poster – somewhere visible to all the Cub Scouts. 3) Play DVD or Read the Big Book - You can either play the DVD or read the story

to the Pack. You should also hand out the smaller story books to the Pack so they can follow along.

4) Do some Dental Activities with the Pack. – Review the poster on the proper way

to brush your teeth. You can play games, color, or do other dental-based activities. There is even a bunch of songs you can sing or play. Feel free to reach out to Donna Manetta at (917)-609-8124 or djmscout@aol.com . Donna has a lot of dental-based activities and song she can email you.

5) Hand out the Cub Scout’s take home kits – You can explain what’s in the kit.
