WHAT IS THE CLOUD?• CLOUD COMPUTING MEANS STORING AND ACCESSING DATA AND

PROGRAMS OVER THE INTERNET INSTEAD OF YOUR COMPUTER'S LOCAL HARD DRIVE.

• THE CLOUD IS JUST A METAPHOR FOR THE INTERNET.• THE CLOUD IS ALSO NOT ABOUT HAVING A DEDICATED HARDWARE

SERVER IN RESIDENCE. • WITH AN ONLINE CONNECTION, CLOUD COMPUTING CAN BE DONE

ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.

MAINFRAMES & REMOTE DESKTOP (CLOUD) COMPUTING

• MAINFRAMES HAVE BEEN AROUND SINCE THE START OF COMPUTING. COMPUTER MAINFRAMES HOLD DATABASES THAT A COMPUTER IN A REMOTE LOCATION WILL ACCESS.

• EXAMPLE: BANK TELLER IN THE 1970S ACCESSING A BANK ACCOUNT FROM A LOCAL BANK BRANCH.

• CLOUD COMPUTING IS A RELATIVELY NEW TECHNOLOGY. SIMILAR TO MAINFRAME COMPUTING, A COMPUTER IN A REMOTE LOCATION LOGS IN TO A REMOTE DESKTOP SERVER TO ACCESS FILES AND PROGRAMS USING A GRAPHICAL INTERFACE. THE REMOTE SERVER (CLOUD) WILL LOOK MUCH LIKE A MICROSOFT WINDOWS BASED COMPUTER.

• EXAMPLE: AN OFFICE MANAGER, USING HIS/HER LOCAL DESKTOP COMPUTER, LOGS IN TO THEIR REMOTE DESKTOP TO PERFORM DAILY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES.

CLOUD DATACENTERS

COMMONLY USED TERMS:• CLOUD: INTERNET-BASED COMPUTING IN WHICH LARGE GROUPS OF REMOTE SERVERS ARE NETWORKED SO AS TO ALLOW SHARING OF DATA-PROCESSING TASKS, CENTRALIZED DATA STORAGE, AND ONLINE ACCESS TO COMPUTER SERVICES OR RESOURCES.

• LOCAL DESKTOP COMPUTER (HOST): THIS REFERS TO THE PHYSICAL (HOST) COMPUTER IN WHICH YOU ARE USING TO CONNECT TO THE CLOUD. DEVICES SUCH AS TABLETS AND IPADS FALL IN TO THIS CATEGORY.

• REMOTE DESKTOP SERVER (RDS): REFERS TO THE CLOUD.• REDIRECTION: REDIRECTION REFERS TO DEVICES THAT ARE INSTALLED ON

THE LOCAL (HOST) COMPUTER AND REDIRECTED TO THE REMOTE DESKTOP OVER THE INTERNET.

• PRINTER REDIRECTION: PRINTERS THAT ARE INSTALLED ON THE LOCAL COMPUTER WILL REDIRECT TO THE CLOUD (NOT ALL PRINTERS WILL REDIRECT). PRINTERS THAT ARE REDIRECTED WILL SHOW AS “PRINTER1 (REDIRCTED 5)” IN YOUR LIST OF AVAILABLE PRINTERS.

• DRIVE REDIRECTION: LOCAL AND USB CONNECTED DRIVES CAN REDIRECT TO THE CLOUD.

• REMOTE SESSION: THIS REFERS TO YOUR REMOTE DESKTOP. YOU WILL OFTEN HERE THIS COMMON PHRASE: “I NEED TO RESET YOUR REMOTE SESSION”

USING THE CLOUD

HOW DO I ACCESS MY PROGRAMS & DATA?

• YOU CAN ACCESS YOUR DATA FROM ANY COMPUTER OR TABLET USING AN INTERNET CONNECTION.

• BY LOGGING IN TO THE CLOUD, YOU ARE ACCESSING A REMOTE DESKTOP SERVER (RDS). • THE RDS IS YOUR NEW WORKSPACE, WHICH WILL HAVE YOUR PROGRAMS, INTERNET

FAVORITES, DOCUMENTS, AND EMAIL ALL IN ONE PLACE. • YOU CAN ACCESS YOUR PROGRAMS AND DATA BY USING REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION (PC

& MAC).

*SOFTWARE INSTALLS MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR.

LOGGING (SIGNING) IN AND OUT OF THE CLOUD:

EASE OF USE• AS SHOWN, LOGGING IN AND OUT OF THE CLOUD IS A VERY SIMPLE

PROCESS. • ONCE MIGRATED, YOU WILL HAVE AN RDC (REMOTE DESKTOP

CONNECTION) LINK ON YOUR DESKTOP THAT YOU WILL DOUBLE-CLICK TO ACCESS YOUR PROGRAMS AND FILES.

• FILES AND PROGRAMS WILL NO LONGER EXIST ON YOUR LOCAL COMPUTER.

• THE BLUE BAR AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN INDICATES THAT YOU ARE ON THE CLOUD.

• THIS CONNECTION IS DEPENDENT ON THE INTERNET AND CAN TAKE PLACE ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.

PRINTER REDIRECTION: • MOST PRINTERS REDIRECT TO THE SERVER. THIS MEANS PRINTERS THAT ARE ALREADY INSTALLED

ON YOUR LOCAL DESKTOP (HOST COMPUTER) ARE USABLE ON THE CLOUD (REMOTE SERVER).

BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING

• THE MOST COMMON FIX TO ANY REMOTE DESKTOP (CLOUD) ISSUE CAN BE RESOLVED BY SIMPLY LOGGING OFF (SIGNING OUT) AND LOGGING BACK IN. THIS REFRESHES YOUR REMOTE DESKTOP (CLOUD) SESSION.

• BEFORE USING THE REMOTE DESKTOP (CLOUD) USERS WOULD RESTART THEIR COMPUTERS TO FIX COMMON ISSUES. LOGGING OFF (SIGNING OUT) AND LOGGING BACK IN IN A SENSE, “RESTARTS YOUR COMPUTER”

WHAT IF: 1. AN APPLICATION IS FROZEN OR IS ACTING IRREGULAR?

A. LOG OFF (SIGN OUT) AND LOG BACK IN.2. MY REMOTE DESKTOP SESSION (CLOUD) HAS LOCKED UP?

A. PLEASE CONTACT THE HELPDESK TO RESET YOUR SESSION.3. THE PRINTER HAS STOPPED PRINTING OR HAS DISAPPEARED.

A. LOG OFF (SIGN OUT) AND LOG BACK IN. B. IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, PLEASE CONTACT THE HELPDESK.

THE CLOUD IS ONLY AS FAST AS YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

• WHEN LOGGING IN TO THE CLOUD, YOU ARE USING AN INTERNET CONNECTION. THE SAME INTERNET CONNECTION THAT TAKES YOU TO FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE, AND PANDORA.

• INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS (ISP) WILL PROVIDE YOU THIS CONNECTION AND THE SPEED. THE MOST COMMON ISPS IN THIS AREA ARE: COMCAST & VERIZON.

• THE SPEED OF YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION DEPENDS ON YOUR ISP, AND WHAT YOU HAVE PURCHASED.

• IF YOUR “COMPUTER” IS SLOW WHILE ON THE CLOUD, IT IS MOST LIKELY A RESULT OF YOUR INTERNET SPEED.

• CABLE AND FIBER OPTIC CONNECTIONS ARE THE MOST SUITABLE FOR THIS TYPE OF CLOUD CONNECTION.

POST MIGRATION

• DON’T PANIC!!• THE NEW USER EXPERIENCE IS THE MOST COMMON ISSUE. USERS WILL

BE EXPERIENCING A NEW WAY TO DO THEIR JOBS. THERE IS A SLIGHT LEARNING CURVE INVOLVED.

• TYPICALLY AFTER MIGRATING TO THE CLOUD, THERE WILL BE STAFF FROM CYBER OFFICE CUBED TO ADDRESS ANY ISSUES AND NEEDS.

IN CONCLUSION (DEMONSTRATION TO FOLLOW)

• THE CLOUD (REMOTE DESKTOP) IS JUST ANOTHER COMPUTER THAT YOU LOG IN TO FROM THE COMPUTER IN FRONT OF YOU OVER THE INTERNET.

• ALL PROGRAMS AND FILES USED ON A DAILY BASIS ARE STORED ON THE CLOUD, AND ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY LOGGING IN TO THE CLOUD (REMOTE DESKTOP).

• EVERYTHING STORED ON THE CLOUD IS BACKED UP, WHILE ANYTHING ON YOUR LOCAL DESKTOP IS NOT.

• ACCESSING THE CLOUD IS A SIMPLE PROCESS AND CAN BE DONE VIRTUALLY ANYWHERE WITH AN INTERNET CONNECTION.

• ALONG WITH LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS, TABLETS AND IPADS CAN BE USED TO ACCESS THE CLOUD (BY INSTALLING AN APP).
