INTRODUCTION

1st STOP: SIN SING KOPITIAM—KUCHING

Ming has been operating the shop which is more than 50years.

He remains committed to keep this shop originally like how it

should be when it was under his father. All of the food and

drinks preparations were done by his family especially his wife

and two daughters. The only food sell here is Sarawak’s special-

ty—KOLO MEE!

3

Special ingredient—Fried Garlic oil

4

Put some coffee powder into the filter then immerse it into hot

water pot to make a plain coffee drink without milk or sugar.

Since most of the customers are old people, they rarely sell

can or soft drinks. Therefore, all of the can drinks are put

on the rack with a small amount of stocks compare to the

other shops.

5

In Kuching, kopitiam is like a breakfast shop which will

usually be open by five or six every morning. Therefore,

people are more preferable to buy their breakfast their

6

People playing chess during tea break is a custom of the coffee shop. Some-

times, there are some young man or even kids will join them for friendlies..

7

2nd STOP:

BIG MOUTH FOOD COURT—

KUCHING

A bigger coffee shop in Kuching which is famous with LUI

CHA, a traditional Hakka dishes. Sometimes, people need to

queue for hours to wait for the food to be ready especially

during some Chinese festivals.

9

10

Lui Cha is a dishes where rice is mixed with various type of vege-

tables. It will be serves with the soup of it. The soup of “lui

cha” is made by mixing different type of natural apices and grated

peanut.

11

Kids usually help out to serve the customers if their

parents are operating a stall in a coffee shop.

12

Combination of breakfast—Green bean soup + fritters.

Sometimes, they might even dip with coffee to make a new

combination depends on their own favourites.

13

14

15

Newspaper is always a must to everyone in the shop. From

this, they can get the latest news from yesterday; they

can get to talk about the topic of the day. It is another

choice of breakfast which can be read.

16

3rd STOP: CHONG KOK KOPITIAM—KLANG

A traditional coffee shop which has been running about 70 years by

Hainan people. It was a motel in 40 years past but a fire closed it

down and it is now only operating coffee shop at the first floor of

the shop house lot.

17

18

19

Simple and old-fashioned tools used. Such as, plastic foldable

tables, menu board and nylon rope to tie something up.

20

21

No matter how old a place is, technology is seen everywhere.

People should have some how protect our history in this developing

era.

22

23

Self bread making by the shop which is rarely found in somewhere

else. It is spread with kaya and butter which is commonly known as

“Roti Kahwin” in Malaysia. 24

We can spot the similarities of kopitiam in Kuching and in Klang,

where they use the same tools in making drinks.

25

In term of the structure, a narrow pathway is found.

This can usually be found in past time shop lots. This

pathway leads to the back entrance of the shop but

they have set it as their kitchen.

26

Carving of the coffee shop’s name on the column.

27

Façade of the shop which is

painted in yellow. 28

This is the end of the journey. Walked through different places in Ma-laysia yet we have found the similarities. Together they enjoy, together they spent their time in a place where they found life. This is the jour-ney from the East to the West.
