19. Fearsome Face, ceramic stirrup-spout bottle (stirrup-shaped handle and spout).

The Peruvian Moche culture inhabited a series of river valleys along the arid coastal plain of northern Peru from about A.D. 100 to 800. They were one of the largest civilizations in South America. Through farming and fishing, they supported a dense population and highly stratified society that constructed irrigation canals, pyramids, palaces, and temples.

Although they had no writing system, the Moche left a vivid artistic record of their activities in beautiful ceramic vessels, elaborately woven textiles, colorful murals, and wondrous objects of gold, silver, and copper.

This pottery is unusual because of its three-dimensional animals.

21. Moche Lord with a Feline, c. 100B.C.–A.D. 500, painted ceramic, height 7 ½ inches.

One of the most distinctive art works is known as the Moche Lord with a Feline. This ceramic vessel depicts a lord sitting in a throne-like structure. Such vessels were known to be extravagan t items and were typically buried with the lord.

This ceramic vessel of a supernatural owl warrior illustrates how the Moche people of northern Peru associated warriors and predators, likening warfare to hunting prey. These vessels frequently featured beings with characteristics of both people, plants and animals.

The most magnificent vessels were decorated in a great detail. This vessel depicts a scene between two mythological persons.

27. Moche Portrait Pottery, life-size head.

The Moche, or Mochica, are perhaps best known for their ceramic art. Their pots include life-sized portrait heads of individuals and three-dimensional representations of animals and people. Many of these pots, looted long ago from Moche sites, can be found in museums throughout the world.
