EARLY SEASON SHOWDOWN: The top-two teams in the
National League West square off tonight for the first contest in a
three-game series and the Dodgers’ first of 19 games against the
Rockies in 2015.
The Dodgers went 13-6 against Colorado in 2014 and have
won six straight home contests in the series. In 2014, Los
Angeles hit .311 with a .481 slugging percentage against
Rockies’ pitching.
Dodgers’ Longest Home Win Streaks Since 2010
Vs. Padres 10 straight wins (July 8, 2011-July 13, 2012)
Vs. Pirates 9 straight wins (Sept. 16, 2011 – April 7, 2013)
Vs. Rockies 6 straight wins (June 16, 2014 – Active)
Vs. Mets 6 straight wins (July 1, 2012—Aug. 23, 2014) SOURCE: STATS, LLC
The Dodgers have won four consecutive games, scoring at
least five runs in each of those contests. According to
STATS, LLC, the last time Los Angeles won five straight
games in a season, scoring five or more runs in every
contest, was Aug. 7-11, 2013 at St. Louis (2) and vs. Tampa
Bay (3).
The Dodgers are tied with the Padres for the most home wins
in the Major Leagues (5) and own the second-best home
winning percentage (.833) in the National League, trailing
only the New York Mets (4-0). The Rockies have been the
best road team in baseball thus far (6-0).
FOLLOW THE LEADERS: The Dodgers’ 13 home runs lead the
National League, two more than the Nationals. The Dodgers also lead
the NL with a .357 team on-base percentage and a .489 slugging
percentage.
Dodger pitchers have posted a Major League-leading 94
strikeouts, eight more than any other team (NYY, 2nd
, 86).
HAPPY BELATED: The Dodgers would like to wish a happy
belated 24th birthday to left-handed reliever Paco Rodriguez.
Rodriguez spent his big day at the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s
Blue Diamond Gala and shares his birthday with Dodger Senior
Advisor to the President, Ned Colletti.
THE MAN: Dodger starter and reigning NL MVP Clayton Kershaw
will make his third start of the season this evening and at 0-1, he enters
an outing with a losing record for just the second time since the start
of 2011. Kershaw lost on April 26, 2011 at Florida, dropping to 2-3
before winning his next start on May 2, 2011 vs. the Cubs and has
been .500 or better ever since. Kershaw has been dominant at Dodger
Stadium since the start of his career:
Most Consecutive Career Home Starts Allowing 3 or Fewer Runs-
Active Pitchers
Adam Wainwright, STL 29 (May 16, 2009 – Sept. 4, 2010)
Clayton Kershaw, LAD 27 (June 26, 2008 – April, 29, 2010)
Clayton Kershaw, LAD 25 (June 5, 2013 -Active)
Jonathon Niese, NYM 24 (May 21, 2013-Active) SOURCE: STATS, LLC
In his career, Kershaw is 6-2 with a 1.38 ERA (11 ER/71.2
IP) in 11 games started vs. the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.
Kershaw has 13 career wins against the Rockies, second to
his 14 victories against the Giants. The left-hander has
allowed just one run over his last four starts against
Colorado, going 4-0 with a 0.32 (1/28.0) ERA and .098
opponent average during this stretch that dates back to Sept.
27, 2013.
Kershaw also ranks among the Los Angeles leaders (min.
1000.0 IP) in wins (98, 10th), winning percentage (.662, 3
rd),
ERA (2.51, 1st), opponents’ batting average (.210, 2
nd) and
WHIP (1.06, 1st).
MORE MOVES: The Dodgers yesterday optioned right-hander
Carlos Frias and today recalled left-hander Adam Liberatore from
Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Liberatore, 27, has appeared in two games for the Oklahoma
City Dodgers and last pitched on Monday, when he earned
the save after tossing a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
The Bellflower native was acquired from Tampa Bay along
with Joel Peralta last Nov. 20 and was terrific during the
Cactus League season, firing 10.1 scoreless innings with nine
strikeouts in 11 games.
The Dodgers also claimed right-handed pitcher Daniel
Corcino from Cincinnati and designated left-handed pitcher
Ryan Dennick for assignment. Corcino, 24, has gone 45-52
with a 4.13 ERA in 168 career minor league games (116
starts) in the Cincinnati organization and saw his first Major
League action last year, appearing in five games (three starts)
with the Reds. Corcino opened the 2015 season with Double-
A Pensacola, tossing a scoreless inning of relief in his only
outing. He was originally signed by Cincinnati as a non-
drafted free agent on Jan. 11, 2008.
FIREMEN: Yimi Garcia picked up the win for a second consecutive
game Tuesday night with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning
after earning his first big league win on Monday. Among relievers,
Garcia ranks third in the Majors with 10 strikeouts and has allowed
just one run on two hits in 6.0 innings in five appearances this year.
Joel Peralta has opened his Dodger career with five
scoreless outings, allowing just two hits and striking out four
without a walk in 4.1 innings. Peralta picked up the win on
Opening Day against the Padres and has already earned two
saves this year after entering the season with only 12 career
saves in 556 previous relief appearances.
Pedro Baez (.200), Garcia (.095), Juan Nicasio (.176) and
Peralta (.143) have held batters to a combined .153 average
(11-for-72) on the season.
The Dodger bullpen was 3-0 with 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12.0 IP),
19 strikeouts and a .125 opponents’ batting average (5-for-
40) in the three games against the Mariners.
GOING GONZO: Adrian Gonzalez, the reigning National League
Player of the Week, extended his hitting streak to 11 with two hits
Wednesday night and is batting .564 (22-for-39) with seven doubles,
seven homers and 12 RBI during the run, which began on Sept. 27,
2014. He leads the Majors in hits (19), batting average (.528), on-base
percentage (.595) and slugging percentage (1.111) and ranks second
with five home runs.
Gonzalez’s 19 hits are the most by a Dodger through the
club’s first nine games, one more than Zack Wheat (1923,
1925), Reggie Smith (1980), Eric Karros (1995) and
Tommy Griffith (1919).
The record for hits through the team’s first 10 games is held
by Karros with 21 in 1995. Wheat (1923, 1925) and Griffith
(1919) had 20.
Gonzalez has reached base safely at least twice in each of the
Dodgers’ nine games this year. Since 1914, the only streaks
of this kind in franchise history longer than Gonzalez’s to
start the season were by Zack Wheat in 1923 (first 13
games) and Jackie Robinson in 1952 (first 10 games).
FIRE IT UP: Tonight is the season’s first Friday Night Fireworks
presented by Denny’s. The fireworks show tonight will be set to
Coachella music. Fireworks shows will take place before 11:00 p.m.
and are subject to cancellation due to length of game.
