DISTANCE LEARNING & ZOOM PROTOCOLS

Distance Learning is the type of school we are presently using “Heights from Home”

Distance Learning is different than Online Learning ◼ set schedule of daily classes (online learning is working on your own on your own schedule at anytime)

◼ Students are “attending” school just at your home instead of physically going to our school building

◼ Zoom is the program we use to hold our classes◼ signing in is not the only requirement, students must sign in and be present the entire

class◼ Students are provided a link by their teachers for each class they have - STUDENTS

SHOULD NOT SHARE THIS LINK WITH ANYONE ELSE!!◼ Students must have their camera on for attendance so teacher can identify them.

The Zoom Protocols are expectations put in place for all Heights students to help them be successful while distant learning.

EARLY COLLEGE

◼ Partnership with Anoka Ramsey Community College

◼ Earn up to 60 credits or an AA degree while attending CHHS

◼ Requirements for admission

◼ Juniors (in fall, current 10th): Top 1/3 of Class rank or 3.5 GPA

◼ Seniors (in fall, current 11): Top ½ of class rank or 3.0 GPA

◼ We can also use a nationally standardized test score like PreACT/PSAT if that’s relevant for CHHS

◼ Then, they’ll be screened for the individual courses:

◼ College Writing, Short Stories, Art, Biology courses: 2.6 GPA

◼ College Algebra: 2.8 GPA plus a C or higher in Algebra II (or equivalent)

◼ PreCalculus: 2.8 GPA plus a B or higher in Algebra II( or equivalent)

GPA – COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE AND SCHOLARSHIPS

GPA is a roadmap to college acceptance and scholarships $$$ - in other words your GPA makes a difference on acceptance and/or if you are eligible for scholarships

◼ ACCEPTANCE - this is where all grades (even 12th grade) are looked at◼ SCHOLARSHIPS (aka FREE MONEY) ◼ Scholarships directly from the college - many based on GPA & are

automatic◼ Local Scholarships - one application for ALL Local Scholarships -

application will be available beginning of March - awarded in May - last year we gave away around $280,000

◼ Athletic Scholarships - must be cleared by NCAA to be eligible (grades)

JUNIORS - COLLEGE POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY

SENIOR YEAR - Reality vs. MythREALITY - by Senior Year most students have met their MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS for GraduationREALITY - the 2 required courses that ALL Seniors take are English 12 (Full year) & Economics (½ year)REALITY - When applying to colleges SENIORS are sending their transcript that includes 9-11th grade classes & gradesREALITY - Colleges do look at what students are taking their Senior Year when making admissions decisions

MYTH - because I have most of my requirements met and only NEED English & Econ I don’t have to have a full scheduleMYTH - because I’m applying to colleges with my transcript that includes 9-11th my classes & grades 12th grade year don’t matterMYTH - since I met all my requirements I don’t need to take any classes in those areas (Science & Math - 3 yrs MINIMUM)MYTH - I doubled up on certain subject areas so I didn’t have to take classes my Senior Year

Applying to Colleges...General Information◼ SAT (College Entrance Exam) -

◼ Oct. 14th - SENIORS ONLY ◼ Doors will open at 7:45 on the 14th with breakfast being served. Test starts at 8:30. Test is about 5 hours long. ◼ Questions feel free to email Mrs. Trnjanin at trnjanic@colheights.k12.mn.us

◼ JUNIORS will take it in the SPRING

◼ All TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS are done through Naviance - check with your student to see if they have used their Naviance Account or if they know how to access it

◼ Applications are done through the specific colleges website OR through the Common Application using their website.

◼ October is College Knowledge Month - most schools in MN allow students to apply for free during this month - some during certain weeks, some the whole month, etc.

◼ FAFSA can be filled out anytime after October 1st but if you have not applied to colleges you should do that first
