Rinnai Headquarters
Hot water: key factsHumans have been heating water since the dawn of time, from
the Roman warm air systems and baths through to specialist
door to door services delivering hot water in 10 gallon jugs. It
wasn’t until the early 2000’s however, that water heating by
continuous flow gas fired systems started to take off in the
UK, forming a paradigm shift in efficiency and performance
and aligning the UK with the rest of the world. Non-domestic
buildings account for 18% of the total carbon emissions with
55% of energy in our non-domestic buildings being used for
delivery of heating and cooling.
Rinnai Corporation Headquarters based in Nagoya, Japan.
Global leaderRinnai is widely considered as a global leader in production
and distribution of gas appliances, reinvesting 3% of nett
sales into R&D to ensure continual product excellence.
Over the past decade, new water heating technology powered
by Rinnai has made a significant difference to the design and
performance of hot water systems.
Continuous flow water heating technology can achieve
over 97% gross efficiency and boast modulation ranges
from 59.5kW to 2.4kW, creating significant energy, cost
and emission savings.
How efficiently the product used and systems designed
operate, can have a big affect on energy and emission
reductions. With outdated hot water systems including
storage type applications, heat and energy is often
wasted unnecessarily through standing losses or system
reheats to ensure high enough water temperatures to
combat Legionella. Some systems can be looking at
standing losses as high as 8kW per 24hrs.
5
Energy consumption in non- domestic buildings 2011
OfficialFrom September 26th 2015, all water heaters
with an output <400kW and all storage water
heaters up to 500 litres will fall under the ERP
directive with appliances up to 70kW and
cylinders up to 500 litres required to label
their products with an energy efficiency rating
of A+++ to G through the ERP label. We are
pleased to demonstrate that all our technology
is at the peak of performance.
In the past 10 years, Rinnai has pioneered the introduction
of continuous flow water heaters that are capable of supplying
the largest commercial demands, incorporating condensing
technology to achieve the highest efficiencies on the market
without compromising performance.Continuous flow water
heaters from the Rinnai Infinity range can supply in excess
of 950 litres per hour at commercial temperature whilst
performing at 97% gross efficiency and producing less than
20ppm NOx.

Rinnai’s new Infinity PLUS is a custom made water heating
solution that brings together multiple units of our award winning
HDC range of condensing continuous flow water heaters into
single, easy to handle modules.
The Infinity PLUS system incorporates water heaters, skid
systems with cable trays, pipe work and electrical connections
providing the complete pre-fabricated turn key solution. All that
is needed are the final connections to the associated services.
Infinity PLUS has been developed to guarantee the maximum
amount of affordable, ecologically friendly, safe temperature
controlled hot water required at any one time by even the most
demanding commercial user.
Each Infinity PLUS module comprises either two or three HDC
units and as any number of modules can be manifolded, the
capacity is infinite even where demand for instantaneous hot
water peaks massively at certain times of the day.
Cascading water heaters
Note: Common header flue kits are available to further streamline installation. Contact Rinnai for more details.
17
ONLY Rinnai offers you the complete commercial package:• Any number of Rinnai water heaters can be manifolded
together enabling the largest capacities on the market
• Near mains pressure flow
• CE and WRAS approved
• Low NOx emissions
• Can be set for temperatures as high as 85°C. Heavy duty heaters are ideal for nursing homes, commercial kitchens, hotels, sports clubs etc, as well as domestic situations in larger houses
• Common header flue kits are available to further streamline installation
An optional electronic control system can link each heater,
turning each one on as required.
The system automatically evens out the work load between
units to minimise wear and tear.
If pipework warrants a secondary return system, this can be
achieved by setting the temperature of the water at 65°C.
Multiple heaters can be set up in this way for
larger installations.
A low temperature re-circulation can be achieved by using an
in-line biocide unit with the temperature set at 40 - 43°C.

Hot water storage systems
In situations where a very large demand of hot water
is required, Rinnai Infinity PLUS storage offers a cost
effective solution.
Using a modular system of either internal or external Rinnai
HD or HDC condensing water heaters and a stainless steel
storage vessel, demands in excess of 20,000 litres per hour
can be satisfied.
Rinnai’s stainless steel storage vessels do not require electric
immersion heating elements and these items may be supplied
as an optional extra if required.
The modular system offers the additional benefit of operational
cover should a water heater fail; easy access and isolation of a
unit for servicing.
Rinnai’s Infinity PLUS storage represents a very competitive
and energy efficient hot water solution for larger heavy
duty applications.
Rinnai Condensing Water Heaters can be
used to maintain the temperature in a
large storage vessel.
This approach could be used where the
hot water requirement exceeds the flow
capacity of the manifolded units, or where
there is an intermittent demand for hot
water in buildings such as hotels, hospitals,
apartments, etc.

Renewable hot water solutions
Rinnai offers both flat plate and evacuated tube collectors,
each with specific benefits to suit your application. Either
option will provide years of low maintenance, low cost energy
to heat your water provided the units are correctly sized
and installed.
OrientationBoth flat plate and evacuated tube collectors work best when
facing due south. However evacuated tube collectors will
outperform flat plate collectors when a due south location is
not an option, i.e. east/west facing or both.
PerformanceThe performance of a flat plate collector is close to that of an
evacuated tube collector in the summer months when facing
due south. Evacuated tube collectors have better overall results
in both early and late season and they are not affected

by adverse weather conditions and even produce impressive
temperatures on cloudy days. The flat plate collectors are
exceptionally sturdy and durable, perhaps more suited to
vulnerable locations.
Evacuated tube collectors have multiple glass tubes which heat
up by absorbing the sun’s energy. The vacuum insulated tube
retains most of this heat and the constant profile of the round
tube means that the collector is always perpendicular to the
sun’s rays. The energy absorbed is approximately constant
over the course of the day.
Swimming poolsSwimming pools and jacuzzis are ideal applications for the use
of solar thermal heating because they are generally used most
in the summer when the energy that can be obtained from the
sun’s radiation is at its maximum.
Rinnai can help you to design, size and install a solar heating
system for your swimming pool or jacuzzi that could also be set
up to heat your domestic hot water at the same time, saving
more money on your ever increasing fuel bills.
Hot water boost applicationsFossil fuel is only used when the renewable thermal energy
store is below its set-point, thus reducing the dependency on
fossil fuel and reducing CO2 emission.
Rinnai can provide solar thermal systems with either flat plate
or evacuated tube collectors and solar cylinders.
These products are also suitable for installation with ground
source and air source heat pumps.

Internal flueing systems and accessories
The Rinnai internal flueing system is highly versatile and makes
installation of an internal water heater simple and convenient.
Notes
1 The heater can be flued vertically, horizontally or any
combination of both.
2 Horizontal flueing can be used as a direct through the wall
flue or extended from another internal wall.
3 Vertical flueing is used when the water heater needs to be
flued vertically through the roof.
4 A siphon pack is required when vertical flue
exceeds 1.5 metres.
5 Rinnai Infinity internal water heaters are classified as
‘room sealed’ appliances. Flue systems must be installed in
accordance with Rinnai Installation instructions (supplied
with flue terminals), local gas fitting regulations, municipal
building codes, and all other relevant statutory regulations.
6 A full range of extensions, bends, brackets and flashings
are available from Rinnai.
7 All flue components for the HD50i are 80mm inner
diameter and 125mm outer diameter.
8 90 degree bend is 2m reduction whilst 45 degree bend
is 1m reduction
9 Additionally, the height from top of the heater to the
terminal cannot exceed 9m.
10 Only Rinnai flueing systems must be used with internal
water heaters. Use of non-Rinnai flueing systems will
invalidate the heater warranty.
11 Common header flue kits are available for the
condensing range only.

Controls
Why install temperature controllers?Remote temperature controllers allow precise temperature
control by the user. The water heater will deliver the selected
temperature even when the water flow is varied or more than
one tap is in use.
Each remote controller can be individually programmed,
however the water heater can only deliver one set temperature
at any time.
Remote temperature controllers cannot override the master
temperature setting made with the DIP switches within
the heater.
• 12 volts DC supplied from the water heater (up to 50m cable run)
• 12 hour AM/PM Clock
• In-use indicator
• Diagnostic tool for commissioning
Maximum number of temperature controllersUp to a maximum of four temperature controllers can be fitted
to Rinnai water heaters depending on water heater model.
Any combination of Universal wired or Deluxe temperature
controllers can be used with the following provisions:
1 Only ONE Deluxe master temperature controller can be installed
2 Up to TWO Deluxe bathroom temperature controllers
3 The FOURTH water controller MUST BE a Universal controller (wired)
Universal remote controllerOur smallest and most economical model, the Rinnai compact
controller can be installed in the kitchen, bathroom, en suite,
even the laundry.
At the touch of a button you can change the temperature up
or down as required. The ‘transfer’ button is a safety feature
that ensures no other controller in the property can change the
temperature whilst the hot water is running.

• Basic diagnostics
Deluxe kitchen remote controllerFor use in the kitchen and the laundry, as with the standard
controller, with the added benefit of working in conjunction
with your deluxe bathroom controller.
When your bath is ready the alarm sounds on all
deluxe controllers.
