Lab: Physical and Chemical Properties of Everyday Materials

In this lab, you’ll be observing the following properties of

materials that make up objects we use everyday.

Color

A common physical property.

Density

The amount of mass that is in a unit of volume. The more mass that is in a unit, the more closely the atoms are packed together and the higher the

density.

Flammability

The chemical property that describes whether an object will burn or not.

Solubility

The chemical property that describes whether an object will dissolve in a solvent (usually a liquid like water).

Hardness

This physical property describes the hardness of an object.

Luster

This physical property describes how an object reflects light (shiny).

Malleability

This physical property describes objects that can be hammered into flat sheets.

Ductility

This physical property describes objects that can be drawn into a wire.

Brittleness

This physical property describes how easily objects will break or fall apart.
