Designing and building modern vessels as: cruiseships, LNG Tankers, Contener ships, FPSOs,specialized and offshore support vessels, is a complexprocess.
The perfect integration of electrical modules willneed performing and easy to install electricalcables.
Nexans has designed a groundbreaking range ofcables which will bring advanced electrical andmechanical performances to shipyards, electricalinstallers and naval engineering and consultants.
Nexans cables bring outstanding benefits andadvantages as: Easy installation: enhanced flexibility, easy pulling, easy connecting & stripability, reducedsize and weight.
Outstanding performances: halogen free, extremeresistance to: Fire, paint, EMC, crush, cold and thermal.
In addition, thanks to its customer orientedapproach, Nexans has developped a very efficientlogistic service and cable management able to s e r v ethe most stringent delivery time and requirements.
For different length, or other air ambient temperature, the electrical resistance can be calculatedwith the formula:
Rt = R20 x L / Ktwhere
Rt (Ohm/km) Electrical resistance in DC at a temperature t in °C for a length L (km).R20 (Ohm/km) Maximum electrical resistance value in DC given in the IEC60228 at 20°C.Kt Correction temperature factor given in the following table and depending on the
room air ambient temperature.
Shipboard cables manufactured by Nexans are designedfor fixed applications on board of commercial or navy vessels.
Depending on the mechanical risk exposition, 2 variousranges are proposed:• Un-armoured cables with MPRX® designation• Armoured cables with MPRXCX® designation
1-1 Conductor:
All conductors integrated in Nexans shipboard cablesare strictly compliant with the International ElectricalCommittee IEC 60228 Standard. Depending on the
application, vessel manufacturers have to chooseconductors flexibility, and also, eventually copperprotection against corrosion or chemical attack byusing tin coated copper.
IEC 60228 specifies different maximum electrical resistance values for each nominal cross section area, both in class 2 or class 5 conductors, and in bare ortinned copper.
In the table below, these values in Ohm/km are givenfor DC measurement (direct current) at the normativetemperature of 20°C.

1-2 Insulation:
Nexans has selected Halogen Free XLPE (cross linkedpolyethylene) compound for all power LV and MVcables up to 6/10 kV, and Halogen Free EPR (ethylenepropylene rubber) for MV cables with 8.7/15 kV or12/20 kV voltages.
All material characteristics: electrical, mechanical andchemical are complying with, and are often, over therequirements of IEC 60092-351.
For small sizes of fire resistant cables, Nexans has chosenthe new INFITT M technology HF 90 in IEC 60092-351that brings many installation advantages, as easy strip-ping insulation.
HF XLPE and HF EPR compounds can be used for ap e rmanent conductor temperature of 90°C; thatcorresponds to a life time of more than 40 years(Arrhenius ageing curve).
These cross linked compounds can also accept a250°C temperature in case of short circuit.
1-3 Armour:
On board, mechanical risk on cables is quite usual inunprotected spaces, it is the reason why most of them
are armoured. As cable weight is important, and isaimed to be minimized, steel tapes or steel wiresa rmour are not used, preference is given to metal braid.
That is the best compromise between mechanicalprotection, weight and installation facility.
For all ranges of shipboard cables, Nexans has chosencopper braid armour that also can be used as a screenand an electro magnetic protection.
G e n e r a l l y, bare copper braid is used on the commercialvessels.
Tinned copper braid armour is only required in offshoreprojects where hydrogen sulphide can corrode thebare copper.
1-4 Sheath:
Outer sheath is the final protection of the cable.Depending on the cable environment, outer sheathcompound must satisfy perf o rmances as extremetemperature, solar radiations, oil, grease and variousaggressive substances.
IEC 60092-359 standard specifies performance valuesto different tests for 2 sheathing material families: SHF1for thermoplastic compounds, and SHF2 for therm o s e t t i n gcompounds.

For the main ranges of stocked products, Nexans haschosen its own SHF1 compound that offers a goodc o m p r o m i s e of performance (cold behaviour + oildrops resistance at ambient temperature). For perm a n e n toil contact, SHF2 compound is recommended.
2 – CONTROL & INSTRUMENTATIONCABLES
Shipboard cables manufactured by Nexans aredesigned for fixed applications for circuits rated at150/250 V, and are complying with IEC 60092-376standard.
Multi-cores cables are mainly dedicated for control, and multi pairs, triples or quads are for instrumentationdevices.
When required, circuit integrity in fire is made by using fireresistant cables complying with IEC 60331-21 fire test.
Control and Instrumentation cables are proposed inversions:• Un-armoured: MPRX®/MPRX 331® for control or
TX®/TX 331® for instrumentation • Armoured: MPRXCX®/MPRXCX 331® for control or
TCX®/TCX 331® for instrumentation
TX® and TCX® ranges are designed with individualscreen over each unit (I) or collective screen over theassembly of units (C).
2-1 Conductor:
Tinned or bare copper, class 2 stranded conductorswith 7 wires are generally required for control andinstrumentation links.
Nominal cross section areas are: 0.5 – 0.75 – 1 – 1.5and 2.5 mm2 .
Due to assembly length factor for large number of unit, electrical resistance are not strictly in accordance withIEC 60228, but electrical resistance values arecomplying with IEC 60092-376 as indicated in thefollowing table:
2-2 Insulation:
As for the power cables, Nexans‘s choice is for XLPEcompound that offers the best compromise in terms ofmechanical and electrical properties.
XLPE compound has also a low permittivity value about 2.3.
For fire resistant cables, the new INFITtTM technology(HF 90 compound in IEC 60092-351) has been chosen.
2-3 Cabling:
For instrumentation range, in adjacent units, differentcores lay lengths are selected, in order to reduceinductive effects and cross-talks.
All units are assembled in concentric layers.
2-4 Electrostatic ScreenIndividual (I) or/and Collective (C):
Laminated aluminium bonded to polyester tape with atinned drain wire is generally used as electrostaticscreen with a minimum overlap of 25% of the tapewidth.
Copper braid is also allowed to be used as screeningas stated in IEC 60092-376.
12
2-5 Armour:
As for power cables, armour is made of tinned or barecopper braid.
For instrumentation TCX® (C) range, the armour is alsoused to provide the function of a collective screen.
2-6 Sheath:
SHF1 or SHF2 Sheathing compounds are in accor-dance with IEC 60092-359 standard.
3 – COMMUNICATION CABLES
Communication cables include Coaxial, Fieldbus, LANcopper pairs and optical fibres cables.
3-1 COAXIAL cables:
Main characteristic of this family is Impedance thatcould be 50 Ohms or 75 Ohms.
MIL-C-17 Coaxial cables are usually used for onboardhigh frequency data transmission (communicationequipment, radar, and instrumentation) and also carryvideo signals for surveillance cameras. FLAMEX® RGoffers exceptional fire safety in single cable.
A coaxial cable is often combined with various conduc-tors in a compact hybrid cable for piloting and powe-ring CCTV cameras.
3-2 FIELDBUS cables:
These Halogen-Free Flame and Fire-Retardant cablesare dedicated to maritime applications. They havefixed impedance and transmit an extremely precisedigital signal to control all essential shipboardfunctions, like motors, rudder and hydraulic systems.
Can Bus cable comes in a single or double pair; whileProfibus cable is a single pair and both can besupplied with SHF1 or SHF2 outer sheath dependingon specification.
Adapted from the industrial plant environment, thesehigh performance cables are fully sea resistant and c a noperate safely in temperatures from -20°C to +70°C.
3-3 LAN (Local Area Network) coppercables:
Several categories (Cat 5, Cat 6 and Cat 7) cablesdesigned in 4 pairs are dedicated for high frequencysignal and high rate transmissions.
3-4 OPTICAL FIBRE cables:
General OverviewOptical fibers are mainly used to transmit informationover long distances and with high bit rates. Their bene-fits are numerous: the signa l transmitted on the fiber isnot disturbed by any electromagnetic wave created bypower cables or electric machines. It also providesmore security, as these cables can be fully dielectric.Besides, they provide a weight and space saving dueto their small diameter, only 250 µm.
An optical fiber is made up of three main parts: thecore, the cladding and the coating.
In the center, the “core” is made of doped silica and issurrounded by the “cladding”, made of natural silica.
The light signal propagates along the core and thesignal is reflected on the surface between the core andthe cladding.
An acrylic “coating”, generally made of two layers, isprotecting the sillica part against abrasion duringinstallation.

Different fiber types are available:
• Multimode fibers are used for Local Area Networks(LAN) where the network links can be up to 2,000meters. Two standard sizes of core are offered: 62.5µm and 50 µm (with better perf o rm a n c e s ) .Multimode fibers have a graded index profile toreduce the dispersion of the signal during thetransmission. The high size of the core is interesting
for easy connection and does not require high costtest equipment.
• Singlemode fibers are able to transmit over longerdistances. The installation is more delicate as theyhave a smaller core of 9 µm. This implies more preciseconnectors and test equipment.
14
On a global network point of view, although the costof multimode fiber is more important than the single-mode’s, the complete system is more economic. IndeedMultimode fibers are used with cheap transmissioncomponents LED(1) or VCSEL(2) whilst Singlemode fiberoperates with more expensive LASER.(1) LED: Light Emitting Diode(2) VCSEL: Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser
Optical fibers are used at specific wavelength.Multimodes fibers are mainly used at 850 nm and1,300 nm and Singlemode are used at 1,310 nm and1,550 nm. The attenuation performances are better atthe higher bandwidth with consequently improvedtransmission performances.
Optical fiber can be provided with different characte-ristics. Indeed the performance need for fiber in patchcord or fiber over one kilometer link are obviouslydifferent. The fiber choice is based on optical parameterssuch as attenuation, bandwidth performances andchromatic dispersion.
Different international standards are available to describethe optical fiber characteristics: ITU G652 forSinglemode fiber and IEC 60793-2-10 for Multimodefibers are worldwide references.

Optical fiber connectors
Nexans are able to preassembleoptical fibers with plugs, we canprovide this service in our factoryor on site. A fiber optic connectoris a non permanent join betweentwo fibers.
Standard fiber connectorsmay be used, as e.g. ST, SC,FC and LC connectors
ST Connector (standard)
This type of connector is suitablefor both multimode fiber and sin-glemode fiber. The ST connectorand the bajonet-holder is the mostpopular used connector world-wide.
To achieve the best possibletransfer of light signal bet-ween fibers, higher qualityconnector is required asE2000 or MT-RJ that is usedfor fiber modem applica-tions.
E2000 Connector
An E2000 connector is a specialconnector with high level attenua-tion coefficient. This connector issuitable for multimode fiber andsinglemode fiber.
Due to the code system, thisconnector is very user friendly andcan also be fit as a single connec-tor or duplex connector
The built-in filler cap protects theferrule against contamination. Thefiller cap open/close during theconnector plug in/out.

4 – FIRE PERFORMANCE
Nexans Research Center has adapted a program ofconstant improvement for insulation and sheathingmaterials, and cable designs.
Some developments ensure fire performance characte-ristics for the Nexans shipboard cables range as flameet fire retardancy, smoke and fumes emission, fire resis-tance integrity and cable recycling after life time.
Nexans shipboard cables are fully withstanding therequirements the following IEC standards:
4-1 Flame retardancy: IEC 60332-1Test on a single vertical insulatedwire or cable
This simple test provides an adequate evaluation of theflame retardant characteristic of a single cable.Depending on the cable size (diameter and weight) aregulated flame is continuously applied for a calculatedtime to the cable.
The test is passed if the cable has self extinguished andthe burnt portion of the cable has not reached the topof the sample.
4-2 Fire retardancy: IEC 60332-3Test on bunched wires or cables
Cables, when installed, vertically or horizontally laid, bunched on cable trays, in conduit or pipes, are potentialvectors for fire propagation.
This test was developed to obtain a method to deter-mine the fire propagation characteristic of a group of
bunched cables fixed on a vertical 3.5 m ladder (seePart 10 – apparatus).
The fire propagation along a bunch of cables depends on:• the volume of combustible exposed to fire• the geometrical configuration of the cables installation
(touching or spaced)• the temperature at which it is possible to ignite any
emitted gases from the cables• the quantity of combustible gas released from the
cables• the volume of air passing through the cables installation
Nexans provides fire retardant IEC60092 seriesshipboard cables meeting the requirements of thegeneral standard Part 350 that specifies category 22in touching configuration in one or more layers.
IEC 60332-3 standard indicates 5 categories dependingon 2 parameters:• the volume of combustible material ( insulation, filler
and sheaths)• the duration of flame exposition ( 20 or 40 minutes)
For specific and small cables (diameter < 12 mm), firetest is according to the new category (25 previously D)test category that needs less cable quantity.

4-3 Fire resistance: IEC 60331Test of fire resistance integrity of cables
In case of fire, some circuits must maintain the powersupply for vital safety equipment as emergency lighting, alarm systems, fire pumps…
IEC 60331 standard determines the circuit integrity ofa cable during and after a prolonged fire with differenttest equipments and test methods:• flame at 750°C temperature during 90 minutes
applied to a horizontal cable under the nominalvoltage (Part 11 - apparatus and Part 21 - procedureand requirements)
• flame at 850°C temperature during 90 minutes withshocks on the ladder support applied to a cableunder the nominal voltage (Part 12 - apparatus andPart 31 - procedure and requirements)
• for data cables (Part 23 - procedure and requirement)• for optical fiber cables (Part 25 - procedure and
requirement)
For electrical cables, tests are passed if no breakdownoccurs (no failure of the fuses).
Nexans proposes a large range: power, control andinstrumentation of fire resistant shipboard cables testedwith test equipment specified in Part 11 and testmethod in Part 21.
To meet these requirements, Nexans offers the traditionaltechnology with lapped mica tape + extruded XLPEinsulation system; and has developed a specific INFITTM
technology with HF90 extruded compound. This newinsulation gives installation advantages: easier insulationstripping and secured connexions.

4-4 Measurementsof combustion gases:IEC 60754 Part 1 & 2
Part 1: this test permits the determi-nation of the amount of halogengas emitted during the combustionof the different polymeric compounds(insulation, filler, sheaths) takenfrom a cable.
Part 2: this test determinates thedegree of acidity of gases bymeasuring pH and conductivity.
4-5 Smoke density:IEC 61034(27 m3 chamber)
In case of fire; smoke emissionsconsiderably reduce the visibilityon board.
Passenger evacuation has to beheld in a very short time. Therefore materials used in shipsshould not spread a lot of opaquesmoke.
Nexans shipboard cables aredesigned to withstand the require-ments of IEC 61034 based on the27 m3 test developed by theLondon Tr a n s p o rt ExecutiveResearch Laboratory.
This test permits to measure thedensity of smoke emitted from burn i n gcables (light transmittance).

5 – PULLING & INSTALLATION
In order to reduce pulling and installation time, Nexanshas designed a cable range which offers:• time saving on connexions by easy sheath and
insulation stripping• reduced weight, diameter and volume• easier drawing due to low friction coefficient of
polyolefin outer sheath compound.
Nexans decides to distinguish main cable circuits bydifferent outer sheath colours:• red for medium voltage cables (from 1.8/3 kV up to
12/20 kV)• black for power and control cables rated 0.6/1 kV• grey for instrumentation and control cables rated
150/250 V• orange for all types fire resistant cables• blue for intrinsic circuit cables
In order to avoid unwanted effects of electromagneticinterference (EMI) as far as possible, Nexans recom-mends to separate on different cable trays, powercircuits from control, instrumentation or communicationcircuits.
5-1 Pulling
The process of pulling electrical cables on board ofmarine vessels is relatively a usual procedure.Nevertheless, Nexans would suggest some followingrules to avoid any cable degradation and damage.
Prior to start, care must be taken to ensure that thepulling equipment directly attached to the cable istightly fitted over the complete cable and not only toone cable element such as the outer sheath, armour orconductors.
The maximum pulling force exerted on the cable mustnot exceed 50 N/mm2 (of nominal cross section areaof the conductors) whether the cable is being manuallypulled or with a winch or other mechanical equipment.
If the cable link is pre-cut before pulling, the cable hasto be correctly coiled to avoid any over twist.
Pre-cut cable ends, in waiting position before finalinstallation and connexion must be protected.
All cable runs must be smooth and clean or coveredwith a complementary protection to prevent any outersheath damage.
When several cables are pulled together, talcum isrecommended to limit friction and abrasion betweencables and to ease the pulling process with bettercables sliding.
Where cables have to be pulled perpendicularly toother cables already installed, it is advised to protectthem to avoid abrasion damage.
Cables have to be pulled with a slow and regularspeed about 20 m/minute, and with a minimum outertemperature of -15°C. It is always necessary, to storecables in warmed premises at an ambient temperatureof + 10°C for 12 hours. A longer period might benecessary for large drums.
5-2 Installation
Cables installation must be in accordance with certifi-cation Bodies rules, and also with IEC 60092-352 orIEC 61892-4.
Some recommendations are given as follow about:• special precautions for single-core cables for A.C.
wiring• minimum bending radius • parallel cable links.
5-2-1 Precautions for single-core cables:
In order to reduce electro-dynamic forces when a shortcircuit appears, symmetric method for cable installationis recommended as is shown in the following table (L1, L2and L3 indicates the location of the respective phaseconductor). See 1st template on opposite page.
5-2-2 Minimum bending radius:
To limit the stress (elongation/compression) on insulationand sheath materials when cable are bent, rules aboutminimum internal bending radius have to be respected:• in fixed installations• during pulling and installation
Values for these MBR stated in IEC 60092-352 and IEC61892-4 are given in the following table.See 2nd template on opposite page.
5-2-3 Parallel cables link:
According to certification society rules, several cablescan be installed in parallel if certain conditions arer e s p e c t e d :
• cables type must be the same (same design) • cables must be rated for the same temperature class• cables must have the same nominal cross section areas• conductor cross section area > 10 mm2• cables must have equal lengths.

6 – ELECTRICAL PARAMETERS
For power, low voltage and medium voltage cables, cross section nominal areas are calculated in takinginto account several parameters as:• permissible current carrying capacities • voltage drop• short circuit values
6-1 Permissible current carryingcapacities:
Permissible current carrying capacities are stated bythe rules of the vessel approval authority and in linewith IEC 60092-352 and IEC 61894-4 standards.
These values are applicable for DC and AC with anominal frequency of 50 Hz or 60Hz.
For higher frequency, current ratings shall be calculatedwith appropriate method.
First, these values depend on the temperature class ofthe cable, and mainly on the maximum service tempe-rature suitable for the insulation compound.Nowadays, in shipbuilding industry, 90°C ratedcables are mostly installed on board.
Other important parameters are to be taken intoaccount for the choice of the nominal cross sectionareas of conductors:• ambient temperature • mutual heating effect due to cables grouping• short time duty• solar radiation
This catalogue gives only an extract of IEC 60092-352standard that selected 2 methods for the determinationof current carrying capacities for continuous service. These methods are derived from experimental dataand from IEC 60287 (Electric cables- Calculation ofcurrent rating).
Method A: calculation with the formulaI = A S m – B S n where
I is the current rating capacity(in Ampere).
S is the nominal cross sectionarea of conductor (in mm2).
A and B are coefficients, m and nare exponents according tocable type and method ofinstallation.
This method allows for greater choice of use in differentinstallation configurations (see IEC 60092-352and/or IEC 60364-5-52).
Method B: calculation with the formulaI = A S 0.625 where
I is the current rating capacity(in Ampere).
S is the nominal cross sectionarea of conductor (in mm2).
A is a coefficient dependingon the conductor temperatureclass, e.g. A = 18 forMPRX and MPRXCX cables.
6-1-2 Cables grouping
When cables are installed in group, due to thermal effect,a correction factor 0.85 must be applied to reduce thecurrent carrying capacities.
Current ratings are recommended as being applicable toboth unarmoured and armoured cables laid in free air asa group of 4 bunched together. These ratings may be
considered applicable, without correction factors for agroup of maximum 6 cables bunched together on cabletrays, operating simultaneously at their full rated capacity, without free air circulation around them.
When, it is to be expected that air temperature aroundcables could be higher than 45°C (due to heat transfer orin compartments where heat is produced) the currentrating given in the table shall be reduced.
35°C 40°C 45°C 50°C 55°C 60°C 65°C 70°C 75°C 80°C
Ambient temperature
6-1-1 Ambient temperature
For other ambient air temperatures, correction factors have to be applied.
23
6-1-3 Short time duty
Correction factor could be also applied to maximisecurrent ratings when cables are operating during a shortperiod (less than 1 hour).
This factor depends on the cable time constant and alsoon the cable diameter.
For more details, see IEC 60092-352.
6-1-4 U.V. solar radiation
We recommend shielding cables from direct solarexposition, but in case of solar radiation, a correctionfactors must be applied to the current carrying capacitiesgiven in the table: • 0.8 for black colour of outer sheath• 0.9 for light colour of outer sheath (e.g. light grey).
6-2 Voltage drop:
Current carrying in an electrical link induces a voltagedrop. This value is the difference between the measuredvoltages at both ends of the link.
In general, accepted values (in percentage) are 3% forlighting and 5% for motors or other uses.
Voltage drop depends on:
• type of current: direct current (DC) or alternative current(AC) in single or tri-phased systems
• length of the link : directly proportional
• c a r rying current (amperage) and power factor (cos phi)
• cable and conductor electrical parameters: electricalresistance and inductance.
In direct current system: ΔU = 2 L R I
In single phased alternative current system:ΔU = 2 L I (R cos ϕ + Z sin ϕ)
In tri-phased alternative current system:ΔU = L I ℘3 (R cos ϕ + Z Sin ϕ)
where
ΔU voltage drop (in Volts).R electrical conductor resistance
in operating temperature(in Ohm/km).
L cable length (in km).I current rating value
(in Ampere).Cos ϕ power factor, if no details,
power factor is cos ϕ = 0.8and sin ϕ = 0.6.
Z reactance (in Ohm/km).
For a quick calculation, the following table gives thevoltage drop for most of low voltage cables with XLPE
(90°C temperature class) and for various values of cos ϕ.
Values are for a tri-phased system (3 or 4 conductorcable, or 3 single core cables).

For other short circuit duration, the maximumshort circuit rating is calculated with the formula:I sc = A/ ℘t where
I sc is the short circuit ratingduring “t” second.
t is the short circuit duration.A is the short circuit rating for
1 second.
The following table gives current carrying capacities incontinuous service for 90°C rated cables for anambient air temperature of 45°C.
6-3 Short circuit values:
Cables and their insulated conductors must withstandthe thermal effect produced by the short circuit whichcan flow in the circuit.
As the duration is low, normally less than 5 seconds, adiabatic heating in insulation compound is only considered.
The short circuit current rating calculation is based onthe difference of conductor temperature before and atthe end of the short circuit.
These temperatures are depending on the insulationcompound, e.g. for XLPE, initial temperature is 90°C( m a x i m u m operating conductor temperature) and finalmax temperature is 250°C.
S h o rt circuit current ratings are also depending on theduration of the short circuit before the setting off thee l e c t r i c a l protection (circuit breaker or fuse).
The following table gives values for cables insulatedwith XLPE, HEPR and HF90 compounds as MPRX®,MPRXCX®, MPRX® 331 and MPRXCX® 331.

7 – ELECTRICAL PARAMETERS FORINSTRUMENTATION CABLES
For instrumentation cables, main electrical parametersare:• electrical resistance and loop resistance • current ratings • voltage drop• mutual capacitance • loop inductance and L/R ratio
• insulation resistance (conductors, screen, armour)
All these values are given in the following table forNexans TX® and TCX® range with bare copper conductor.
27
An other important parameter for these instrumentationcables could be the screen efficiency and the transferimpedance value designated by Zt.
Nexans has studied screening efficiency for TX® andTCX® range. Curves (transfer impedance related tofrequency) have been established for various 7 pairs.
Zt (mΩ/m)
F (kHz)
Transfer impedance Value (Zt) according to the frequency (F)
• TX®(C):(Unarmoured, collective screen)Electromagnetic screening of the TX (C) cable is simpleand shows a medium protection in pollutedelectromagnetic surroundings.
• TX®(I):(Unarmoured, individual screen)TX (I) is an excellent compromise between TX (C) andTCX (C) cables.
• TCX®(C):(Armoured, collective screen)The TCX (C) cable shows a low transfer impedance inlow frequency and an effective screening in highf r e q u e n c y. TCX (C) would be recommended in pollutedelectromagnetic surroundings.
• TCX®(I):(Armoured, individual screen)This cable type shows an excellent protection in bothlow and high frequency runs.

For fixed installations on ships and offshore units in all locations and on opendeck in safety circuits, where fire resistance is required. The good screening qualities of the copper braid also reduce radio interf e r e n c eand electrical influences to electronics installations. The cable meet the flametest requirements for bunched cables according to IEC 60331-21 as well asthe flame test requirement for bunched cables according to IEC 60332-3-22and IEEE 45-18.13. This follows the intention of the SOLAS requirements. Allmaterials are halogen free. This design ensures that non corrosive and lowtoxic gases are emitted in case of fire. Therefore, this cable type is especiallydesigned for installations on passenger ships.

Nexans Active Networking Systems hasdeveloped a comprehensive line ofactive Ethernet based switch systemsdesigned for office, harsh environm e n t s ,industrial, and specialty applications.Based on more than 20 years of experi-ence in the field of high-performanceoptical fiber and copper networks,Nexans is offering state-o f - t h e-art activenetwork solutions.
Fields of application are the simple andsecure realization of fiber optic and twi-sted pair networks for infotainmentsystems (Video on Demand), vendingmachines for cashless payment transacti-ons, Wireless LAN for internal communi-cation (e.g. handheld terminals), Voiceover IP (VoIP) and numerous other appli-cations in the cabin environment, restau-rants, theatres, etc.
In order to ensure simple configurationand management of these devices,Nexans has designed an easy to use toolspecifically tailored to the requirements ofthe user. The Nexans Switch ManagerNexMan V3 ensures the automated distri-bution of master configurations and soft-ware updates to any number of industrialswitches. Distribution of the complete orpartial configuration is all possible.Another important feature of NexMan V3is the central archiving of all switch confi-gurations in a database. In case of failure, this key feature will ensure the rapidreconfiguration of the switch parametersand minimize downtime.
NexMan V3The NexMan V3 user interface providesthe administrator with a complete over-view of the current state and accessibilityof the switch systems available in the net-work. By simply selecting a switch system, you can set several parameters such asport configuration, SNMP trap receiver,802.1x, Radius, and many more.
The user does not need to haveknowledge of complex managementsoftware systems in order to performthis function.
WEB, TELNET, SNMP and V.24 manage-ment interfaces are also supported. Theintegration into higher managementsystems like HP Openview, Spectrum, etc.is further made possible.
A multitude of parameters can be readout from systems with SFP interface via themanagement system. Changes in the linkcharacteristics (e.g. attenuation increases)can be detected and resolved on the basisof threshold values prior to a possibletotal failure of the link. Appropriate mes-sages (SNMP traps, Syslog) can also besent to a central management system.
Cable Diagnostic FunctionThe iSwitch 7xx and 10xx series ensuresthe easy and fast localization of possiblefaults on the copper twisted-pair cablelinks. Identification of short circuits, inter-ruptions, impedance mismatches or rever-sals, can be localized to the meter via the
management feature. The implemented manageable Po w e ro v e r-Ethernet (PoE) feature (optional)makes it further possible to power e. g. IPcameras, wireless access points, Vo I Pphones or multifunctional terminalsdirectly via the switch system. Thereby, theuser does not need any plug-in power
supplies for the terminal units. All systems can also be supplied withpower via an RJ45 external connection. This enables the systems to be used atremote locations where no 24VDC or
48VDC power supply is available. The Nexans systems provide a unique
concept for the recovery of the completesystem configuration. This allows untrai-ned staff to easily reconfigure the systemafter a failure. All iSwitch systems areequipped with an integrated MMC cardslot through which the complete systemconfiguration may be saved as a backucopy. In the event of a failure, the useronly needs to swap out the MMC cardfrom the old switch, insert it into the newswitch, and the configuration will automa-tically be mirrored to the new device. Asan option the switch can even be bootedwith the MAC address of the MMC card,so the superior address tables (e.g. in
routers) all remain unaffected.Nexans Switch systems support all rele-vant security mechanisms such asIEEE802.1x and MAC-based access con-trol. In connection with a central authenti-cation server, e.g. RADIUS, security inenterprise networks is considerably impro-ved. Maximum security is achieved byaccess control directly at the user port ofthe Nexans iSwitch system. Thus the iden-tity of the client is verified directly at theconnection point and not only at thebundled port of the central switch.
Any potential abuse of the networkconnection, e.g. by listening in on traf-
fic, is thus principally excluded. All switch systems support the RapidSpanning Tree Protocol (RSTP). The RSTPguarantees the automatic and fast switch-over to a redundant link in the event of thefailure of a transmission link. This featureclearly improves the availability of the net-
work!
The redundant power supply featurefurther guarantees the operational safetyof the systems. The systems can be poweredwith 24VDC or 48VDC. Power failures canbe signaled via alarm contacts, SNMPtraps or Syslog messages.
