Legal Basis Council Decision 2015/1835– EDA Functions and tasks[(d) support defence technology research, and coordinate and plan joint researchactivities and the study of technical solutions meeting future operational needs, inparticular by:
(i) promoting, in liaison with the Union's research activities where appropriate,research aimed at fulfilling future security and defence capability requirements andthereby strengthening Europe's industrial and technological potential in this domain;
(ii) promoting more effectively targeted joint defence R&T;
(iii) catalysing defence R&T through studies and projects;
(iv) managing defence R&T contracts;
(v) working in liaison with the Commission to maximise complementarity and synergybetween defence and civil or security-related research programmes;

What is a CapTech?
A Capability Technology group ("CapTech") is a working group of the EDA dedicated to a particular
technology area
Main objectives:
} Generate collaborative R&T Projects within technology scope,
} Support EDA participating Member States in the preparation of wider
Programmes.

CapTech Naval Systems and Their Environment
• Protect sea lines of communication, ensure freedom of movement and provide logistics in theatre
• Surface and underwater platforms • Underwater sensors• Naval weapon systems and countermeasures • Simulators, training systems and synthetic environments• Naval operating environment including oceanography
• Unmanned Maritime Systems programme consisting of 15 coordinated projects with 11 contributing Members. The total volume of the programme is 56 M€.
• Individual projects include Protection of Marine Mammals and Flow in Service (Propeller Performance)
CAPABILITY NEEDS:

PROJECTS/PROGRAMMES:
CapTech Naval Systems and Their Environment is a group of 250+ maritime experts whose task is to map potential areas for European cooperation and prepare new projects.

CapTech Materials & Structures promotes and manages research in underpinning technologies on structures and materials from design to wearability and repair. It encompasses considering usability and resistance, protection, signature behavior properties, addressing also materials’ technology science. The work is generally of TRL in the ranges of 2 to 4, although work in higher TRLs is not ruled out.
The task is to promote collaborative projects and activities.
CapTech Materials & Structures
• Protection, Stealth, Logistic support, Availability of systems –Through life support – Maintenance - Reparability - Sustainability, Maneuverability and mobility – Survivability.
• Structural & Smart Materials• Structural Mechanics &
Processing• Signature Related Materials
• BaToLUS: Battle Damage Tolerance for Lightweight UAV Structures• CCNS: Corrosion Control on Navy Ships• PATCHBOND: Bolt free battle and operational damage repairs of metal and composite aircraft
structures• ALOMAS: Advanced Low Observable Materials And Structures• CERAMBALL: Light weight ceramics for ballistic protection
