Procedure

The steps that follow describe how to apply vinyl siding.

Step 1

Vinyl siding expands and contracts much more than wood siding. Therefore, it is important to attach the siding to the sheathing properly.

Never drive nails tight. Leave approximately 1/32" between the underside of the head and the vinyl.

Drive fasteners straight and level and in the middle of the nail slot.

Start in the center of the panel and work toward the ends.

Space fasteners no more than 16" apart on panels and 8" to 10" apart on accessories.

a. Measure down from the top of the top plate to a point at least 1" below the bottom plate.

b. Allowing for inside and outside corner posts, nail the starter strip along the chalk line.

a. Tack the inside and outside corner posts in place.

b. Start at the top of the post and nail down on each side.

Step 4

a. Using housewrap or flexible self-adhesive material, apply flashing around the windows and doors.

b. Overlap the nailing flange on the doors and windows.

Step 5

Nail J-channel to the sheathing wherever necessary to hold the ends of siding panels. Areas around windows. At gable ends. Where a side wall meets a roof.

Step 5

Attach the other trim pieces at this time.

Step 6

a. Place the first panel in the starter strip and nail it into place.

b. Add the remaining courses.c. Leave a 1/4" gap between the siding and all

corner posts and channels.d. Increase the gap to 3/8" when installing siding

in temperatures below 40ºF (4ºC).

Step 7

a. If the top course of siding has to be cut to fit beneath the soffit, use a snaplock punch to create a nailing flange along the cut edge.

b. Use vinyl trim to cap the top of the wall, as needed.
