Acts 9:1-9 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out

murderous threats against the Lord's

disciples. He went to the high priest and

asked him for letters to the synagogues

in Damascus, so that if he found any

there who belonged to the Way,

whether men or women, he might take

them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he

neared Damascus on his journey, sud-

denly a light from heaven flashed

around him. He fell to the ground and

heard a voice say to him, "Saul, Saul,

why do you persecute me?" "Who are

you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus,

whom you are persecuting," he replied.

"Now get up and go into the city, and

you will be told what you must do." The

men traveling with Saul stood there

speechless; they heard the sound but

did not see anyone. Saul got up from

the ground, but when he opened his

eyes he could see nothing. So they led

him by the hand into Damascus. For

three days he was blind, and did not

eat or drink anything.

“New Message”

Sermon by Sid Robbins

Children’s Time

With Pastor Sid Robbins

Do you enjoy crafting and/or scrapbooking? Tracy Inman and friends

will be in room #105 on Saturday June 2nd between 9am and 9pm and

invite you to bring your own craft supplies and projects and craft with

them throughout the day. Come and go as you please and enjoy the

fellowship of working along with other crafters on your own projects at

your own pace. Email office@crossroads-umc.com with questions.

Why were all the people who spoke different languages in Jerusalem to hear

the disciples speak in tongues? Was it a cosmopolitan city like London, Paris or

New York? Were all these different people tourists or residents?

All those people were Jews, from different parts of the world. They had

returned to Jerusalem to celebrate the second big festival in the Jewish

calendar – Shavuot. Because Shavuot occurred fifty days after Passover, the

Greek word for Shavuot was Pentecost. We often think of Pentecost as a

Christian celebration, but it also refers to this Jewish holiday.

Shavuot had/has three main emphases: 1) A festival of first fruits where offer-

ings are made to God in celebration of agricultural harvest, and in particular

the wheat harvest (the bread offered on this occasion is made using yeast –

different than Passover), 2) The revelation or giving of the Torah/ Law of Moses

at Mt. Sinai, and 3) lots of eating, fun and celebrating.

For Christians Pentecost is all about the coming of the Holy Spirit. At the first

Pentecost the speaking in tongues and Peter’s explanation was all about

revealing God’s plan and will. Peter even quoted the Old Testament to

connect this revelation of the Spirit into the signs, visions and miracles that

were happening around them. For Jews, God’s revelation came through the

Law of Moses; for those early Jewish Christians God’s revelation came through

the power of the Holy Spirit.

New this year:

THE ESCAPE ROOM

So fun! Solve the case to

escape! Kids will love it!

We are in the planning stages

for Vacation Bible School 2018, to

be held Monday through Friday,

July 23rd to July 27th from 6pm to

8pm. This year’s theme is “The

God Squad”, loosely based on

PBS’s “The Odd Squad”, so our

scientific agents will be solving

cases while learning the Bible

stories each day. Our mission

project will be to raise funds for

The Heifer Project. We may

have some real, live animals on

hand for that part of the evening!

There will be a free meal each evening at 5:30pm, prior to the opening assembly. Pas-

tor Sid Robbins has penned our bible story skits for each day and we have a new ele-

ment this year, in keeping with our theme. We will have an “Escape Room” in place of

our games rotation and it should be a LOT of fun! In addition to the Escape Room, we

will have our music, crafts, and science rotations, and will also offer VBS for teens again

(7th grade and up).

If you are interested in serving at VBS 2018, please see Cathy Parks or Cindy Jones or

email cjones@crossroads-umc.com. Registration is now open. Register online here The

God Squad VBS or pick up a blank form from the information table in the sanctuary.

FREE T-Shirt for all VBS volunteers! Hope you can join us!

We appreciate all who attended our BBQ

dinner. Thanks to your generous donations,

we raised over $900 for our Praise Band,

meaning we have met our goal and have

purchased our new drum set. We are excited

about the improvement in our worship music

as a result of this new acquisition for our band.

Our youth group and some

church members enjoyed a

picnic at the Belton Memorial

Park on Wednesday. In

addition to grilling hotdogs

and fixing s’mores they

celebrated Lauren Thayne’s

graduation.

Congrats Lauren!!

THANK YOU We celebrated Kevin Siems last

Sunday for his service to

Crossroads. Thanks Kevin!

We appreciate you!

Ms. Stacy and Kids First had

some fun times at Deanna

Rose Children’s Farmstead

on Thursday.
