Yo, Hippos!

RTC is coming up! The theme has to do with superheroes, which I’m excited about. I

hope to see you all there. Also, Halloween is coming up and I bet some of you are going

to dress up as hippos, amirite?

Stay frosty,

Hello Hippos! With school having re-

turned, many of us have reformed back to

our old ways of procrastination and nap-

ping after school. Whatever you prefer to

do, remember to remain focused and se-

rious about your education! For my fellow

seniors, I hope you have thought carefully

about your plans for college. Maybe we

will be applying to the same schools! To

everyone else; be sure to try your abso-

lute hardest in class and be sure to get

those extra-credit points when possible.

I’m speaking from experience when I say

that every point counts. In regards to Key

Club, many exciting events are rapidly ap-

proaching! In just a few weeks, on Octo-

ber 12th, Region Training Conference will

be held at Canyon Crest Academy with

Divisions 11, 21, 31, 37E, 37N, and 37S!

Hundreds of Key Clubbers will be there all

day! You can still buy your tickets! Trust

me, you won’t want to miss it. Fall Rally

will be on November 9th, where we plan

to bring home the spirit stick, and soon

after Fall Rally, we will be hosting a large

movie fundraiser-social featuring the 2nd

Hunger Games movie – Catching Fire! BEE

on the lookout for these exciting upcom-

ing events, and make sure to keep track

of your calendar! You won’t want to miss

any of them.

Bonding with our Kiwanis? Yes, please! This month, students of Patrick

Henry Highconnected with many Kiwanis members of our sponsoring club,

Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis! To volunteering with them in various

events such as the Junior Wheelchair Olympics and Meals on Wheels, to

attending their weekly Kiwanis meetings over the summer, it only made

sense for us to support our Kiwanis club at their 2013-2014 installation!

And on September 6th, 2013, that was exactly what we did.

The installation took place at the beautiful Marine Room in Marina Village

Mission Bay that Friday evening. The view of the ocean was perfect for the

Kiwanis theme of Gilligan’s Island, a popular TV-show of the 60s. Dressed

up as our favorite characters from the show, and admiring all the intricate

costumes of all the Kiwanis members, the feel in the room was tropical; all

about relaxation under the sun! From the decorations all over the room,

this was not just a banquet, but the 3-hour cruise on the SS Minow!

After an hour of socializing with the Kiwanis members and SDSU Circle K

members that also attended, we sat down to enjoy the great food of Chef

Tina Martini, a regular at the weekly Kiwanis meetings. She showed off her

great cooking skills with her Gilligan’s Kahlua pork, Skipper’s teriyaki chick-

en, Ginger’s pineapple rice, Maryann’s Key Lime cupcakes, and the Profes-

sor’s tropical ice tea… it was delicious! Immediate past-president Gary

Blume did a fabulous job hosting the event, dressed up as Gilligan himself!

With parting words and thoughtful gifts recognizing several members, Gary

left his position with grace and a legacy. Lt. Governor-Elect Barry Kistler

also attended the meeting and installed the new officers of the year! We

congratulate Joe Huston (president), Antonio Orosco (president-elect),

Chrissy Tanoura (vice-president), Seren Huston (treasurer), Mickey Zeich-

ick (Secretary) and new board members John Chandler, John Crawford and

Gene Elmore and hope they have a successful year of Kiwanis!

Not only were several committee members and supporting officers recog-

nized… but the president himself! Gary Blume had the honor of accepting

the award of 2012-2013 Kiwanis of the Year for contributing his time and

effort into Kiwanis International and to his home club. Congratulations

Gary! You really deserved it! We look forward to working with our Kiwanis

more throughout the year and we hope that other clubs are inspired to do

the same! With his inaugural address, Joe Houston proved to us that he

would become a great President and an inspirational role model to us Key

Clubbers. All in all, the Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis Installation was

very enjoyable and such a great experience! We can’t wait to come back

and see what is in store for next year!

MMHS FIRST MEETING

5

On Thursday, September 19, 2013, the Key Club at Mira Mesa High School held its first

meeting. The board members are ecstatic for the 2013-2014 year. It was great to see all

the new and old members. Each individual is either looking forward to a year continuing

their memories of Key Club or creating their first memory of Key Club. It was exciting

seeing all the people trickle into the room slowly, sitting down and joining the Key Club

family. The advertising proved to be successful, as the seats were filled and there were

overflow people standing in the back. Mira Mesa High School’s Key Club is looking for-

ward to a year filled with service!

RTC: SUPERPOWERS OF SERVICE

An event where Key Clubbers

from Region 1 and 2 get to-

gether to learn how to be-

come better members and of-

ficers for the future. Work-

shops are presented, ranging

from learning to use Pho-

toshop to learning how to

keep their school’s Key Club

running. In between the

workshops, Key Clubbers get

together to show off their

spirit through their mascots

and cheers. These spirit bat-

tles will determine which divi-

sion deserves the spirit trophy

at the end. The theme this

year is Superpowers of Ser-

vice! We encourage you to

dress up for the event! A

dance follows after all these

tiring workshops to release

the stress. We hope to see

you there this year!

September Newsletter: 9/13/13 Club Fair & 9/19/13 First Meeting Patrick Henry High School had its Club Fair this

month! It was a really great way to advertise the objectives of Key Club and inform others of the benefits of join-

ing! We screamed at the top of our lungs and waved turquoise arrows pointing to our booth. Many curious stu-

dents came to look at our pictures and even signed up for more information! Our booth was so crowded, that we

overcame the booth next to us. Our sign-up sheets were jam-packed with potential members.

The following Thursday, September 19th, we also had our very first meeting! Right as we ran to the auditorium

doors, a handful of guests were eagerly waiting to enter. Four G.A.G. Kiwanis members, ten SDSU Circle K mem-

bers, one UCSD Circle K member, and two Key Club Alumni came to support us! When the doors were finally

opened and everyone was seated, all of the board members were in shock by the number of attendees, all the one

hundred seats were filled, entryways were filled, doorways were filled, and students were sitting on the floor! Dur-

ing the meeting, board members took turns and talked about what Key Club is, what Key Club can do for you, what

events we do, etc. We ended the meeting with a few informative and comical trivia questions! Overall, despite the

few technical difficulties at the beginning, everyone was entertained, informed, and excited to attend the next

meeting!
