Project’s Aims• Increase the use of Internet by the Municipality
inhabitants.• Reinforce the awareness and knowledge of the local
community for the benefits in the use of ICT.• Removal of the digital isolation of the local community in
remote and mountain areas.• Development of a friendly environment for the
“acceptance” of ICT regarding new-job creation and broaden the skill capabilities of the unemployed.

Why Archanes town? (1)• Archanes town is continuously inhabited since Minoan time (4.000
years).• It is a mountainous town.• The Open University in Crete is established in Archanes.• There is an Archaeological Museum.• There is a Center for Environmental Education.• There are 9 Associations for the promotion of the environment, local
culture and arts.• There is an Agricultural Association (collection, packaging, promotion
and selling of grapes, wines, olive-oil)• There are many professionals dealing with the agricultural and
tourism sectors.

Why Archanes town? (2)• Arhanes town received the 2nd award by the European Commission
and the International Union R.E.D. (Ruralite – Environment – Development) regarding the “Agricultural Development and Village Upgrading” (2000).
• There are established in Archanes:– a health center.– a Center for the protection of the elderly.– a Public Information Center.

e-Archanes today• e-Archanes project development was concluded in 2009 and is in
continuous operation since then.
• The Municipality of Archanes – Asteroussia has a 3 – staff members for the management and operation of e-Archanes.
• More technical details by the Technical Director of SDC SA Mr. B. Samios, the coordinator of the consortium that won the international bid for the project implementation.
