While Jerry Seinfeld can simplify life to three basic rules, we believe the Learner Profile provides the underlay and the overlay to what we do at school…..and in life.

The contention of this presentation is that if you combine CREATIVITY and CITIZENSHIP with CONNECTIVITY and COMPASSION then you actively promote all attributes of the IB Learner Profile - 4 x C =LP

• Traditional school leadership roles were transformed into a comprehensive government body.

• Closely reflects Australia’s parliamentary system.

• Annual voting to determine government and opposition ministers.

• House of Representative members (Class Captains) elected each semester.

• Bills passed include: Special Occasions and College Blazer.

2008 (episode 32) ABC Compass program featuring Al Zahra College School Parliament.

“You can take it from me that you and your school have inspired us. This has been really valuable for us and I hope that some of the recommendations that we make will come out of our visit to your school and will be in the interests of the people of Australia.

“ I think I speak on behalf of the committee: I cannot believe the depth of knowledge that your students have about civics and the history of our country. We have taken evidence from a number of schools. I do not think we have had a class who had the depth of knowledge that your students have. Even at a senior level.”

CREATIVITY Going Bush Thinker Risk-Taker

• In 2005, a selection of students from Catholic, Islamic and Government schools engaged in regular activities to produce a children’s book, Going Bush.

• Published by Unwin and Allen.

• Described as a journey of friendship and harmony to inspire all Australians.

• Going Bush explores the harmony of the natural environment and the harmony that may be found in friendship and collaboration.

• The launch of the project at Al Zahra College proved an excellent opportunity for parents and community members to meet in a true spirit of harmony.

In our fold-out books we wrote the story of the bush walk.

Learning how to draw with charcoal.

We learned how to use conté crayons

We wrote in our fold-out books every week.

We wrote poems about harmony

We made shell jewellery.

Ken showed us how to do botanical drawings.

We saw coral fern in the overhang at Russells Pool.

We launched our paperbark canoes.

The sandstone caves have been used as shelters for thousands of years.

After the bushwalk we all played handball.

Plaiting lomandra wasn’t easy.

This is one of the paperbark balls we made.

It was hard to get everyone smiling at the same time.

Nadia and Ken joined us for a photo opportunity.

In the ferny glade we drew maps.

For some of us it was the first time in the bush.

When we finished the walk we mapped our journey.

Nadia helped us with our journey maps.

It was good to eat together in the bush.

Friendship is … company

Friendship is … eating, drinking, playing and living together

During the project we wrote lots of poems.

Ken showed us the technique of shading.

We wrote how the Eora people looked after the land.

We drew the different species of leaves we collected.

Interschool Harmony Group Communicator Open-Minded

• Initiated in 2003.

• Involves school leaders from Government, Catholic and Independent school sectors to work together to promote harmony.

• Each year, principals, teachers and students from each school combine in a range of activities, including an annual project .

• Principals meet each term to plan.

• Annual projects have included a joint play (The Friendship Tower), published book (Going Bush), activities day, Teachers’ Day dinner and a surf lifesaving program at Cronulla beach, the scene of the 2005 riots.

• Students actively support national fundraising efforts though various events to provide significant contributions towards cancer research, sudden infant death syndrome research and the Heart Foundation.

• Two orphans are sponsored annually.

• Global appeals are strongly supported when they occur (for example, the Tsunami Appeal, the Pakistan Flood Appeal.)

• Students support other students in grade-based activities on a termly basis.

• The strong service culture at AZC makes students aware that it is possible to make a positive difference in the world.
