It is important for students to declare anacademic program as early as possible intheir academic career, but no later thanby the time that 15 degree-applicableunits are completed. Students must have a declared program inorder to be eligible to receivefinancial aid, and students who

have declared programs are given earlier registration appointments. Studentsmay declare multiple programs and may change their declared program atany time; however, no student should remain undeclared after completing15 degree-applicable units. Students can declare or change an academicprogram by submitting a Change or Declare Major Form to the Office ofAdmissions and Records on the Fremont campus or the Student ServicesCenter on the Newark campus. Transfer Credit from Another InstitutionOhlone College accepts credit for lower division coursework previouslycompleted at a college accredited by one of the six regional accreditingassociations. Students must have official transcripts sent to the Officeof Admissions and Records on the Fremont campus. To be official, thetranscripts must be sent from college to college or be hand-delivered
in a sealed, unopened college or university envelope. An Ohlone counselorwill review the coursework to determine how it may be applied to the
comprehensive Student Education Plan.
Students who have completed courses at non-regionally accreditedinstitutions may meet with an Ohlone counselor to petition forindividual courses to be accepted for major requirements. Thecredit is non-transferable toward a baccalaureate degree. Students
who want to use coursework completed at a foreign institutionmust have their transcripts evaluated by an approved foreign
evaluation service. Students must meet with a counselor to petitionto use any of this coursework toward the associate degree. Courseworkfrom a foreign institution cannot be used to certify CSU GE or IGETC.

Steps In Choosing Your Ohlone College Academic ProgramIt is always best to consult an Ohlone College counselor before making any decisions about your academic future. Associate in Arts and Associate in Science DegreesAccording to §55061(a) of the California Code of Regulations, “The awardingof an Associate Degree is intended to represent more than an accumulationof units. It is to symbolize a successful attempt on the part of the college tolead students through patterns of learning experiences designed to developcertain capabilities and insights. Among these are the ability to think andto communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; to usemathematics; to understand the modes of inquiry of the major disciplines;to be aware of other cultures and times; to achieve insights gained throughexperience in thinking about ethical problems; and to develop the capacityfor self-understanding. In addition to these accomplishments, the studentshall possess sufficient depth in some field of knowledge to contribute tolifetime interest.”
Students are provided with several optionsfor fulfilling the requirements for an associatedegree at Ohlone. Each option is designed tomeet specific educational goals. It is imperativefor students to meet early and often with a counselor to both plan and maintain theireducational plan. The four categories of majorsand three patterns of general education aredescribed below and can be combined tomeet various educational goals.
Students are eligible for graduation upon thecompletion of a general education pattern, amajor, and an accumulative total of 60semester units in degree-applicable courseswith a minimum of a C (2.0) grade pointaverage (GPA) and with a minimum grade ofC in all courses in the major field (includingmajor field electives and supporting courses).
Multidisciplinary MajorsStudents may fulfill a major in one of fivegeneral areas (Business, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts,Natural Science, or Social Science) bycompleting a minimum of 18-20 units selectedfrom the designated departments and courseslisted in the curriculum guides in this catalog.Upon verified completion of these 18-20 units; the general educationrequirements specific for Ohlone College (Plan A), CSU GE (Plan B), or IGETC(Plan C); and any necessary elective requirements, students will be awardedan associate in arts in the specified area.
Associate Degree for Transfer to CSU (ADT)California Community Colleges offer associate degrees for transfer to theCSU. These degrees include associate in arts for transfer or associate inscience for transfer degrees (ADT). These degrees are designed to provide aclear pathway to a CSU major and baccalaureate degree. California CommunityCollege students who are awarded an ADT are guaranteed admission withjunior standing somewhere in the CSU system and given priority admissionconsideration to their local CSU campus or to a program that is deemedsimilar to their community college major. This priority does not guaranteeadmission to specific majors or campuses.
Ohlone College currently has twenty-seven approved associate degrees fortransfer. For 2019-2020 Ohlone’s approved associate degrees for transferare in Administration of Justice; Anthropology; Art History; Biology; BusinessAdministration; Communication Studies; Computer Science; Early ChildhoodEducation; Economics; English; Film, Television, and Electronic Media;Geography; Geology; Global Studies; History; Kinesiology; Mathematics; Music; Philosophy; Physics; Political Science; Psychology; Social JusticeStudies; Sociology; Spanish; Studio Arts; and Theatre Arts. Studentsgraduating with an associate degree for transfer cannot use Ohlone College(Plan A) General Education.

Majors for Students Intending to TransferSome associate degrees are designed to prepare students for a baccalaureatemajor by fulfilling many of the lower division major and general educationrequirements at the California State University (CSU) and University ofCalifornia (UC) campuses. While the core courses required in these degreesfor students intending to transfer fulfill many of the lower divisionrequirements, students are advised to meet with a counselor to assess thecourse requirements for specific universities. Upon verified completion ofthese majors; the general education requirements specific for Ohlone
College (Plan A), CSU GE (Plan B), or IGETC (Plan C); andany necessary elective requirements, students are awardedan associate in arts or an associate in science degree inthe specified major.
Occupational MajorsOccupational programs are available to students interestedin preparing for employment in the fields listed on pages56-57. Occupational majors are designed to preparestudents for entry-level employment, but these majors canalso prepare students for transfer into a comparablebaccalaureate major. Students are advised to consult witha counselor if they wish to consider transfer possibilities.Most of the occupationally-oriented programs lead eitherto an associate degree or to a certificate of achievement,the latter usually taking one year to complete. It is possiblefor students to enroll in specific individual courses frommany of these programs for personal benefit withoutcompleting a total program; however, some programshave separate admissions requirements and many courseshave prerequisites. Upon verified completion of anapproved occupational major; the general educationrequirements specific for Ohlone College (Plan A), CSU GE(Plan B), or IGETC (Plan C); and any necessary electiverequirements, students will be awarded an associate inarts or an associate in science degree in the specified major.
Associate Degree for Transfer To CSUThe Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (Senate Bill 1440,codified in California Code of Regulations sections 66746-66749)guarantees admission to a California State University (CSU) campusfor any community college student who completes an “associatedegree for transfer,” a newly established variation of the associatedegrees traditionally offered at a California community college. Theassociate in arts for transfer or the associate in science for transfer(ADT) are intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’sdegree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completingthese degrees are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. In order to earn one of thesedegrees, students must complete 60 required semester units of CSU-transferable coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.0. While a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required for admission, some majors mayrequire a higher GPA. The associate degree for transfer may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particularCSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSUsystem. Students should consult with a counselor when planningto complete the associate degree for transfer for more informationon university admission and transfer requirements.

Associate Degree: Graduation InformationThe successfully completed General Education pattern may be applied toone or more associate degrees. Upon verified completion of graduationrequirements, the major appears on the student’s permanent record, alltranscripts, and on the diploma. Please see the Catalog Rights Policy onpage 41 for information regarding which catalog year students may use tosatisfy graduation requirements. Whichever catalog year is selected, allgraduation requirements must be completed within that year. Of the 60semester units required for graduation, 12 semester units must be completedat Ohlone College.
An Application for a Degree/Certificate must be submitted no later than thedeadline posted on the academic calendar in the semester in which the studentexpects to complete requirements. Please refer to the academic calendar inthe class schedule or the Admissions and Records web page (www.ohlone.edu/admissions/academiccalendar) for the specific date. College transcripts of all prior work must be on file in the Office of Admissions and Records on the Fremont campus before the Application for a Degree/Certificate can be processed.
The student’s transcript will certify the student’s graduation as either thelast day of Fall Semester, Spring Semester, or Summer Term, as appropriate.Ohlone has one formal commencement ceremony each year at the end ofthe Spring Semester. All graduates who complete requirements during theacademic year or the ensuing Summer Term are encouraged to participatein the commencement ceremony.
Students with a cumulative grade point average in all college work appliedtoward the associate degree between 3.20 and 3.49 inclusive will graduate“With Honors.” All students with a cumulative GPA between 3.50 and 4.00inclusive will graduate “With Highest Honors.” These notations will beincluded on the diploma.
General Education
General Education Description/PhilosophyThe General Education Program at Ohlone College reflects the values ofthe college, its students, and community, and is intended to preparestudents to live and work in a dynamic, multicultural, and global society.The college is committed to providing students with learning experiencesboth grounded in theory and application which are meant to develop theabilities to think critically; to communicate clearly and ethically in bothoral and in written form; and to use mathematics, science, and technologypractically while acquiring quality physical health. Furthermore, the collegeguides students in understanding the modes of inquiry of the majordisciplines and provides activities and experiences in the appreciation ofperforming arts, the sustainability of the physical environment, and valueof multicultural and diverse perspectives. Insights gained from experiencesof others and themselves will guide self-understanding and promote thelifelong learning process.
General Education: Ohlone College General Education Pattern (Plan A)The Ohlone College (Plan A) General Education pattern requires a minimumof 18 units in completing an Ohlone-specific general education pattern,including intercultural/international studies, wellness, and informationcompetency components. Ohlone College (Plan A) requirements may alsobe met through the reciprocity agreement explained on page 49. The OhloneCollege (Plan A) General Education pattern is recommended for studentswhose immediate goal is to complete an associate degree with either ageneral or occupational major. Students who desire to complete an associatein arts for transfer or an associate in science for transfer (ADT) cannot useOhlone College General Education (Plan A). In some majors students may berequired to complete more than 60 semester units to obtain an associatedegree. Students are advised to consult with a counselor.

Area I Natural SciencesCourses in the natural sciences are those which examine the physical universe,its life forms, and its natural phenomena. To satisfy the General Educationrequirement in natural sciences, a course shall be designed to help studentdevelop an appreciation and understanding of the scientific method, andencourage an understanding of the relationships between science and otherhuman activities. This category includes introductory or integrative coursesin astronomy, biology, chemistry, general physical science, geology,meteorology, oceanography, physical geography, physical anthropology,physics, and other scientific disciplines.
Upon receipt of an associate degree from Ohlone College, students will beable to:
1) Analyze and apply concepts of biological and/or physical science obtainedthrough the scientific method.
Area II Social and Behavioral SciencesSocial and behavioral sciences courses increase the understanding of individualand group-influenced behavior in a variety of contexts: geographic location,economic structures, historical background, political institutions, socialgroups, societies, and the individual person.

Courses will challenge students to think critically about these contexts andshould promote appreciation of how societies and social subgroups operatewithin them. Courses will also develop the students’ abilities to recognizeand apply appropriate methods of inquiry to the particular social scienceareas that is being studied.
Upon receipt of an associate degree from Ohlone College, students will beable to:
1) Identify and apply the major theories and methods of inquiry of therelevant social or behavioral science to a variety of contexts in order toinvestigate, analyze, or predict individual or group behavior.
2) Describe how individuals and/or groups are influenced by their social,cultural, and/or historical contexts.
3) Apply disciplinary knowledge from the social or behavioral sciences tocontemporary ethical or social dilemmas.
Area III Fine Arts Theory and Humanities andParticipatory ArtsCourses in the fine arts and humanities area cultivate intellect, imagination,sensibility, and sensitivity. Courses fulfilling this requirement study great worksof the human imagination; increase awareness and appreciation of thetraditional humanistic disciplines such as fine and performing arts, literature,music, philosophy, history, and communications; impart an understandingof the interrelationship between creative art, the humanities, and the self;provide exposure to both Western and non-Western cultures; and may includea foreign language course that contains a cultural component as opposed to a course that focuses solely on skills acquisition. Fine Arts Theory coursesinclude courses that are historical. In addition to the traditional lecture classesin humanities, the humanities and participatory arts area includes arts coursesthat are experiential or participatory.

1) Analyze and value modes and/or theories of artistic expression.
B. Humanities and Participatory Arts
1) Identify the influence of the cultural, social, economic, or politicalforces on human experience, thought, or expression; or participatein human expression through the creation of art.
Area IV Language and RationalityCourses in language and rationality provide students with the opportunity to develop their critical thinking and communication skills, as well as theircomputational skills. Courses in these areas focus on writing, argument, analysis,problem solving, and verbal communication.
Upon receipt of an associate degree from Ohlone College, students will beable to:
A. English Composition
1) Write a well-organized paper in Standard English which presentsa main idea supported by effective documentation and details.
2) Demonstrate the ability to write effectively for a variety of purposes,using correct grammar and appropriate style.
B. Analytical Thinking and Oral Communication
1) Think logically and critically to solve problems, draw conclusions, andevaluate evidence.
2) Communicate an idea clearly, either verbally or in written form.
C. Math Proficiency
1) Demonstrate the ability to think analytically by applying the concepts and techniques of algebra to the solution of real world mathapplications.
Area V Physical Education/WellnessPhysical education courses are activity-based. Wellness courses are notnecessarily activity-based and have a focus on such topics as nutrition, stressmanagement, weight management, fitness, and personal wellness.
Upon receipt of an associate degree from Ohlone College, students will beable to:
A. Physical Education
1) Value the importance of and develop a regular regimen of physicalactivity and/or exercise.
2) Demonstrate fundamental skills incorporating the techniques, rules,and strategies of the activity.
B. Wellness
1) Formulate a personal wellness plan incorporating the basic principlesof a healthful lifestyle.
Area VI Intercultural/International Studies The Intercultural/International Studies requirement is intended to instill in students an appreciation of peoples and cultures other than their own.Students who fulfill this requirement should be able to empathize with and respect those from different cultural backgrounds and realize theinterconnectedness of all peoples. The requirement is meant to help ensurethat Ohlone College graduates acquire the perspective necessary for anenlightened, diverse global citizenry. Students taking a course in theseareas will be able to recognize and negotiate the complex ethics and politicsof construing meaning and building social relationships across differences;e.g.: ethnocentrism, nationalism, cultural imperialism, cultural appropriation,and homogenization of nations and cultures.
Courses which satisfy the Intercultural/International Studies requirementshall be courses wholly focused on the following cultural topics: race, ethnicity,gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, and/or socioeconomicbackground. Courses that satisfy the Intercultural/International Studiesrequirement may focus on any of the aforementioned topics within a U.S.context, or within an international or global context such as technology,economic development, cross national communication, cultural relations,and world art and literature.
Upon receipt of an associate degree from Ohlone College, students will beable to:
1) Analyze the ways historical, cultural, and/or social conditions impact aparticular intercultural/international group or culture.
2) Develop sensitivity and skills for living and working in a culturally diverseworld.
Area VII Information CompetencyInformation Competency is the ability to identify an information need, findthe needed information efficiently, and use information effectively andethically. Information Competency combines aspects of library literacy,research methods, critical thinking, and technological literacy.
Upon receipt of an associate degree from Ohlone College, students will beable to:
1) Develop effective research strategies.2) Locate, retrieve, evaluate, and use information ethically and legally.

General Education: California State University GeneralEducation Breadth Requirements (CSU GE; Plan B)The California State University General Education Breadth pattern (CSU GE;Plan B) requires a minimum of 39 semester units in completing a specificCSU-approved General Education pattern. This option is especially forstudents whose immediate goal is to transfer to a CSU campus. The CaliforniaState University (CSU GE; Plan B) pattern is recommended for studentscompleting an associate degree and the pattern enables students to meetlower division general education requirements at a CSU. California StateUniversity (CSU GE; Plan B) may also be coupled with either the transfer oroccupational majors; however, students may be required to complete morethan 60 semester units to obtain an associate degree. Students are advisedto consult with a counselor.
General Education: Intersegmental General EducationTransfer Curriculum (IGETC; Plan C)The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum pattern (IGETC;Plan C) requires a minimum of 37 semester units in completing a GeneralEducation pattern acceptable at either a UC or CSU campus. This option isrecommended for students whose immediate goal is to transfer to a UC orCSU campus, or for students who intend to transfer but are not yet sure ifthey will be going to a UC or CSU canpus. Intersegmental General EducationTransfer Curriculum (IGETC; Plan C) is generally combined with an associatedegree and it enables students to meet the lower division general educationrequirements at either a UC or CSU campus. Intersegmental General EducationTransfer Curriculum (IGETC; Plan C) may also be coupled with either thetransfer or occupational majors; however, students may be required tocomplete more than 60 semester units to obtain an associate degree. Studentsare advised to consult with a counselor.
General Education: Intersegmental General EducationTransfer Curriculum for STEM for CSU (IGETC for STEM for CSU; Plan C)IGETC for STEM for CSU is applicable only to Ohlone students pursuing theAssociate in Science in Biology for Transfer. IGETC for STEM for CSU may notbe used for any other degrees or GE certification at Ohlone College. General Education: Reciprocity with Community CollegesThe Ohlone Community College District has entered into a mutual agreementwith twelve other local community colleges to accept the General Educationof these colleges as completed. The participating colleges are Cabrillo College(Santa Cruz), Chabot College (Hayward), De Anza College (Cupertino),Evergreen Valley College (San Jose), Foothill College (Los Altos Hills), GavilanCollege (Gilroy), Hartnell College (Salinas), Las Positas College (Livermore),Mission College (Santa Clara), Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey), SanJose City College (San Jose), and West Valley College (Saratoga).
Therefore, students who obtain a certification of completion of AssociateDegree General Education or who complete an associate degree at any oneof the participating colleges will have both their General Educationcoursework and graduation proficiencies accepted as completed at any ofthe participating colleges. No additional general education course workwill be required if the certification is officially presented. Students will stillbe required to complete all courses or prerequisites needed for a major. Theagreement also means that the other colleges will accept the Ohlone CollegeGeneral Education pattern if a certification is presented to the membercolleges. The agreement will be reviewed periodically.
General Education: Exemptions for Students withBaccalaureate DegreesA student who has an earned baccalaureate degree from a regionallyaccredited college or university is not required to fulfill the general educationrequirements to earn an associate degree from Ohlone College.
Certificate ProgramsIn addition to degree programs, Ohlone offers three kinds of certificateprograms—the certificate of achievement, the certificate of accomplishment,and the certificate of completion.
Certificate of AchievementCertificates of achievement are awarded for the completion of an organizedseries of courses in a particular emphasis area. These certificates have beenapproved by the Ohlone Curriculum Committee, Ohlone Community CollegeDistrict Board of Trustees, and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’sOffice. Certificates of achievement can consist of 16 or more semester units.Most certificates of achievement are occupational in nature, and many arepathways leading to completion of the associate degree. Thus, students oftenhave the option of completing the additional general education, elective,and supporting course requirements to complete an associate degree as well.
A certificate of achievement will be granted to students who meet the followingrequirements:
1. Maintain a 2.0 grade point average in the specified courses.
2. Complete satisfactorily a specific curriculum or recognized sequence ofcourses as prescribed by selected faculty and/or an occupational advisorycommittee; and approved by the Ohlone College Curriculum Committee,Ohlone Community College District Board of Trustees; and CaliforniaCommunity Colleges Chancellor’s Office; and published in the applicablecurriculum guide.
3. Complete at least six units at Ohlone College for the certificate to beawarded by Ohlone.
An application for the certificate of achievement must be submitted no laterthan the deadline posted on the academic calendar in the semester in whichthe student expects to complete requirements. Please refer to the academiccalendar in the class schedule or the Admissions and Records web page(www.ohlone.edu/admissions/academiccalendar) for specific dates. Officialcollege transcripts of all prior work must be on file in the Office of Admissionsand Records before the application can be processed.

Certificate of AccomplishmentCertificates of accomplishment are awarded for the completion of an organizedcourse of study for a specific purpose, usually career or job related. Thesecertificates have been approved by the Ohlone College Curriculum Committeeand Ohlone Community College District Board of Trustees. Certificates ofaccomplishment can consist of a maximum of 17.5 semester units. Certificatesof accomplishment are designed to allow students to finish a program in a shorter period of time. Although not as comprehensive as certificates ofachievement, these certificates do serve to recognize student achievement in a particular emphasis area. However, per Title 5 of the California Code ofRegulations (§55070.b), a certificate of accomplishment cannot appear on a student’s transcript.
A certificate of accomplishment will be granted to students who meet thefollowing requirements:
1. Maintain a 2.0 grade point average in the specified courses
2. Complete satisfactorily a specific curriculum or recognized sequence ofcourses as prescribed by selected faculty and/or an occupational advisorycommittee; and approved by the Ohlone College Curriculum Committeeand Ohlone Community College Board of Trustees; and published in theapplicable curriculum guide.
3. Complete at least 50% of the required units at Ohlone College.
Certificate of CompletionPursuant to California Code of Regulations (§55151), colleges may offer asequence of noncredit courses that culminate in a certificate of completionleading to improved employability or job opportunities. A noncredit certificateof completion recognizes that students have completed a noncredit educationalprogram of noncredit courses that prepares them to progress in a careerpath or to take degree-applicable credit courses. These noncredit certificatesof completion have been approved by the Ohlone College CurriculumCommittee, Ohlone Community College District Board of Trustees, and theCalifornia Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.
A certificate of completion will be granted to students who meet the followingrequirements:
1. Complete satisfactorily a specific curriculum or recognized sequence ofcourses as prescribed by selected faculty; and approved by the OhloneCollege Curriculum Committee, Ohlone Community College Board ofTrustees, and California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office; andpublished in the applicable curriculum guide.
2. Complete all of the required courses at Ohlone College.
University TransferMany of Ohlone’s students transfer to a college or university after completinglower-division (freshman and sophomore level) courses at Ohlone College.Students who are preparing to transfer need to decide where they will transferand what their major will be. Students who have not yet made these decisionsshould meet with a counselor to explore their options, obtain relevantinformation, and get help making a decision. Students are also encouragedto utilize the publications and services available in the Transfer Center.Counselors will work with students to complete a comprehensive StudentEducation Plan that can streamline the time and number of courses studentsneed to complete their educational goals.
Transfer to the California State University (CSU)Students are eligible for admission as a CSU upper division transfer student ifthey complete 60 or more transferable semester units and
n have a college grade point average of 2.00 or higher (2.40 for non-California residents) in all transferable college units attempted;
n are in good standing at the last college or university attended;n have completed or will complete prior to transfer at least 30 semester
units of courses equivalent to general education requirements withthe grade of C or higher. The 30 semester units must include all ofthe general education requirements for communication in the Englishlanguage (English composition, oral communication, and criticalthinking) and at least one course of at least three semester units incollege-level mathematics.
Students who have not met the aforementioned requirements may qualify fortransfer with less than 60 transferable semester units if they
n have a college grade point average of 2.00 or higher (2.40 for non-California residents) in all transferable college units attempted;
n are in good standing at the last college or university attended priorto transfer;
n meet the admission requirements for a first-time freshman or havesuccessfully completed necessary courses to make up the CSU subjectdeficiencies from high school;
n meet the eligibility index required for a CSU freshman.
Students should always contact the CSU campus of choice to determine whetherthere are limits on admission as a lower division transfer student. Studentsshould consult ASSIST (www.assist.org) and/or the catalog of the CSU campusof their choice to find out specific details regarding transfer, major, andbreadth requirements.

Many majors have specific course requirements that must be met to be eligiblefor admission. A higher grade point average than the minimum may also berequired. Since requirements for a particular major may differ from one CSUcampus to the next and because requirements may change yearly, studentsshould consult regularly with a counselor when selecting classes.
Students who have completed a minimum of 39 semester units of generaleducation coursework required by the CSU can request that Ohlone Collegecertify the completion of CSU General Education. (See CSU General Educationrequirements on page 54.) After students transfer they must also completeany additional upper division or other additional units specifically required by the CSU campus. Requests for general education certification may beobtained at the Office of Admissions and Records on the Fremont campus or online at www.ohlone.edu/sites/default/files/documents/imported/ csug-eigetccertificationrequest.pdf, and should be submitted at the end of thestudent’s final semester at Ohlone College, prior to beginning courses atthe transfer institution.
Students who meet specified subject area minimum requirements mayrequest that Ohlone certify their partial completion of CSU General Education.Students would then be required to complete the remaining generaleducation requirements at the transfer campus according to its ownprocedures and rules.
Students who have completed courses at other institutions should meet witha counselor to determine if those courses meet general education requirementsfor transfer. Courses that are transferable to the CSU have a notation in the class schedule,catalog, and WebAdvisor (https://webadvisor.ohlone.edu) identifying themas “Accepted For Credit: CSU” or “Accepted For Credit: CSU & UC.” Coursesmay be accepted for general electives, for general education requirements,or for lower division major requirements; students should see a counselor todetermine how each course will transfer. Courses without that annotationare not guaranteed to be transferable to the CSU.
The term “impacted,” when applied to a program or major, means that themajor usually attracts many more applicants than it can accept. Consequently,there are special requirements and selection procedures for admission. Studentsintending to transfer and pursue these majors are strongly recommended toconsult with a counselor and research the transfer institution’s most recentadmissions information.
Impacted programs at a CSU campus can vary from year to year. Students shouldcheck with the CSU of their choice to see if their major is impacted beforesubmitting an application. Updated information regarding impacted programsis available online at www2.calstate.edu/attend/impaction-at-the-csu.
Transfer to the University of California (UC)Students are eligible for admission as a UC upper division transfer student ifthey complete 60 or more transferable semester units and
n have a college grade point average of 2.40 or higher (2.80 for non-California residents) in all UC transferable college units attempted;
n are in good standing at the last college or university attended;n have completed or will complete prior to transfer with a grade of C or

Admission is competitive at most UC campuses and a grade point averagehigher than the 2.40 minimum is required. In most cases, students maytransfer up to 70 semester units of credit from a community college. Many UC campuses do not accept lower division transfers (students with less than60 units of transferable college credit). No more than 14 of the UC transferableunits may be graded Pass. All required courses in a major must be taken for a letter grade.
Course requirements vary from one UC campus to the next; therefore, studentsshould work with a counselor to first select a particular UC campus and thenformulate a strategy (or comprehensive Student Education Plan) for completingthat campus’ admissions requirements, major preparation requirements, andappropriate general education requirements.

Students who have completed IGETC General Education (Plan C) requirements(see page 55) can request that Ohlone College certify the completion of thatgeneral education pattern. To make transferring to a private or out-of-stateinstitution as smooth as possible, students should obtain a catalog fromthat institution and work closely with a counselor to plan a course of study.Most catalogs can be found on the institution’s website.

Intersegmental General EducationTransfer Curriculum (IGETC) The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC, Plan C) isa general education pattern that community college transfer students can useto fulfill lower division general education requirements in the CSU or manycolleges in the UC system. IGETC is designed for use by California communitycollege students. Students who completed transfer units at a CSU, UC, orprivate college should consult with a counselor to determine if they are eligibleto use IGETC. (See IGETC requirements on page 55). IGETC is only one way tofulfill the lower division general education requirements of the UC or CSU.
IGETC is not recommended for certain majors and certain colleges; somecolleges do not accept IGETC. IGETC is not appropriate for UC Berkeley’sCollege of Chemistry, College of Engineering, College of Environmental Design,College of Natural Resources, and the Haas School of Business; UC SanFrancisco; UC San Diego’s Eleanor Roosevelt College and Revelle College; andengineering departments at several UC campuses. Also, students pursuingmajors that require extensive lower division major preparation may not findthe IGETC option to be advantageous and may be better served by takingcourses that fulfill the general education requirements of the UC or CSUcampus to which they plan to transfer.
IGETC will probably be most useful for students who want to keep theiroptions open before making a final decision about transferring to a particularCSU or UC campus or choosing a particular major. IGETC does not guaranteeadmission to the university. Students must meet admissions requirements,major prerequisites, and transferable unit requirements.
To be certified under IGETC, all courses must be completed with a grade ofC or better (C– is not acceptable). Students who do not complete three ormore of the IGETC breadth and general education requirements beforetransferring will be subject to the regulations regarding breadth and generaleducation requirements at the campus to which they have been admitted.Students must request that the IGETC certification be sent to the universitythey will be attending. The IGETC certification may be obtained throughthe Office of Admissions and Records on the Fremont campus or online atwww.ohlone.edu/admissions, and should be submitted at the end of thestudent’s final semester at Ohlone College, prior to beginning courses atthe transfer institution.
Transfer ProgramsWhile at Ohlone College students may complete their lower division (freshmanand sophomore) general education requirements and lower division majorfield courses prior to transfer. Many courses offered at Ohlone have beenarticulated with the University of California, California State University, andprivate institutions. Students may access ASSIST at www.assist.org to seewhich courses transfer, to which CSU and UC campuses, for which majors,and how courses are applied. Students are encouraged to meet with acounselor in order to develop a specific transfer plan. For information onany of these transfer programs, students should contact Ohlone’s CounselingDepartment and/or Transfer Center.
Transfer Admission Guarantees (TAGs)Transfer students have an opportunity to secure a seat at a specific college oruniversity prior to the regular admission application period through theTransfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program. Historically Black Colleges and UniversitiesHistorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have an excellentacademic track record. While only about 17 percent of black undergraduatestudents attend an HBCU, more than 28 percent of African-Americans whoreceive bachelor’s degrees obtain them from an HBCU. These colleges anduniversities are also leading institutions in awarding degrees to African-American students in the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, andengineering programs.
Thanks to an agreement signed March 17, 2015 between the CaliforniaCommunity Colleges and many HBCUs, California community collegestudents who complete certain academic requirements are guaranteedtransfer to a participating HBCU. A complete list of the 37 HBCUs currentlyparticipating in the agreement is available online at http://extranet.cccco.edu/HBCUTransfer.aspx.
The objective of the California Community Colleges Historically Black Collegesand Universities (HBCUs) Transfer Program is the development of TransferGuarantee Agreements that will facilitate a smooth transition for studentsfrom all of the California Community Colleges to partnered HBCUs. Theseagreements simplify the transfer process and reduce students’ need to takeunnecessary courses, thereby shortening the time to degree completionwith a cost savings. The agreement with the 37 HBCU partners means thatCalifornia community college students are now guaranteed transfer to anyof these campuses should they complete the academic requirements, whichare similar to those required by University of California or California StateUniversity for transfer.
Association of Independent California Colleges and UniversitiesA new agreement was signed on July 25, 2018 by the California CommunityColleges Chancellor’s Office and the Association of Independent CaliforniaColleges and Universities (AICCU) to accept associate degrees for transfer(ADTs) and receive guaranteed acceptance to 36 private, non-profitbaccalaureate colleges and universities. The purpose of this agreement is toensure acceptance of prior coursework and to facilitate the transfer to anAICCU participating institution of California community college studentswho have completed an ADT.
