Risks of computerwork?
Problems:• RSI: ‘Repetitive Strain Injury’, also known as:
• CANS : ‘Complains Arm Neck Shoulder’
“mouse-hand” and “sms-thumb”
• Back pain• Dry/burning eyes
Signals:
pain, stiffness, prickles, strength loss, clumsiness, cold hands, swellings, change of skin-colour, …..
RSI / CANS
How to work with your computer:
• Adjust your chair, desk and display • Move as much as you can• Less then 6 hours per day
(gaming included)• Use your laptop with a separate
keyboard, mouse, and place it on a laptop holder
• Follow courses for more efficient studying

Advice from a fellow student with RSI
“I had already seen some people with RSI complaints.
I never thought that it could happen to me” (source: dutch RSI society)
His advice:• Talk about your complaints• Draw a line on how much you can have• Ask for help• Be careful not to try to satisfy others too much• Don’t be a perfectionist • Listen to your body

• Keep escape route free• Keep wires and cables free• Equipment off and candles out
INSTALL SMOKE DETECTORS!!! Smoke is toxic … it kills you silently
in your sleep…!
Smoke detectors are cheap € 5 (the price of 2 beers…)

ambulance
More efficient than dialing 112 !!!!!!

• Think of your own safety• Warn people in your surroundings • Dial the emergency number (who, what, where)
Fire: Leave the building, close the door
First Aid: Stay with the victimLet someone guide the medical assistance from the entry of the building
Bystanders hinder quick and efficient assistance:
DON’t STAND BY, ACT !!!
What to do in an emergency
Evacuation
When you hear this warning signal:• Try not to panic, try to stay calm• Close doors and windows• Leave the building, assist needy people
