Line

• Traditionally line is made by dragging a marking material over a surface

• In photography, line can be very literal or take on a more abstract quality

• ex: power lines are literal and a sidewalk takes on a more abstract line quality

Shape

• A shape is any enclosed area

• Shapes can have a directionality, divide the frame, or give a strong focal point

• Often times, shapes give an overall impression of order or chaos to an image

Space

• Positive Space is an area that is occupied by an object

• Negative space is an area unoccupied

• in photography negative space is often an are of sky or a portion of the image that is out of focus

Color

• Color can affect composition by calling attention to an object

• Lack of color will call attention to shape, line, texture...

Texture

• The way something looks like it feels

• texture is very important in black and white images

• It gives a feeling of reality to an image

Repetition/Rhythm

• Repetition and rhythm lead the viewer through the image

Motion• Blurred motion and stopped motion

are going to influence your composition by the shaped that are made with the action

Focal Point• The point at which the viewers eye is

drawn

Foreground/Background• Foreground-Objects near the front of

the picture plane, usually low in the frame

• Background-Objects that appear farther away

Balance• Symmetrical-even balance on both

sides of the frame

• Asymmetrical-one side is heavier, but there is still an overall feeling of balance
