“Education is the greatest engine of the personal
development”― Nelson Mandela
1 Introduction
The country has inequity that is waste. It is only the children from
the wealthy and middle class families afford to attend to formal
preschools. About 18% of the countries children do not get to see any
formal education. The issues are further see when more than 43% of
the children remain malnourished. It is in this context the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were framed to address the
world's major development challenges which includes the challenge
of putting every child through a formal Primary Education.
2 About Vidhya jyot Project
Swadeep shikshan vikas Sanstha is currently attempting at
implementing a field based programs, named “Vidhya jyot Project”
in partnership with the GHCL Foundation, Sutrapada.
3 Key Strategy
The strategy of this projects aims to work with children at all the
three levels of Education namely at the preschool level, thereafter at
the Primary School level and finally at the High School level. The
strategy is to join hands with the teachers and the Parents wherein
both play an important role to make this happen.
Designed by- Swadeep Shikshan Vikas Shanstha 4
4 Project Objectives
The Vidya Jyot project addresses three objectives. These are:
1) Enhance the capacity of the service providers (Anganwadi
workers, formal school teachers), improve the quality of nutrition
and emphasize upon to improve the quality of education. In
Anganwadi Children effort is to help them learn more words and
improve their vocabulary skill.
2) Decrease the dropout rate in the formal schools by promoting
habit of going to pre-schools. To bring out children’s latent power
and make efforts to help children become regular in school.
3) Provide children with solutions and remove their confusions in
Math’s and English through provisioning of educational materials
and also help them to overcome their stress through counseling.
Designed by- Swadeep Shikshan Vikas Shanstha 5

GHCL Foundation Trust, Sutrapada.
Designed by- Swadeep Shikshan Vikas Shanstha 6
6 Our Impact
Though the problems seem insurmountable, Swadeep firmly believes
that actionable and effective solution always exits. With financial and
networking support coming from GHCL Foundation Swadeep has
been able to achieve the following in the past one year.
5000 Children in rural areas of these two blocks have received
some or the other kind of support under the “Vidhya Jyot Project”.
11 Villages of Sutrapada and Veraval Taluka, Gir-Somnath
District-Gujarat are covered under the project.
30 Anganvadi centers whose workers and helpers have received
training under this project. They have with training provided
structured pedagogy inputs to the toddlers.
1191 Children of 30 Anganvadi centers are receiving Preschool
education through the project.
2869 Children of the Primary school have benefited under the
Karate Training ,Sports and Extra curricular activities carried out in
the schools. This also includes preparation for the Navoday Exam

Designed by- Swadeep Shikshan Vikas Shanstha 7
3200 parents are today with the project. They meet at regular
intervals and share their concerns and provide inputs, support and
guidance in our endeavor. Parents meeting and Field visit under
“Vidhya Jyot Project” considers the role of parents as primary to the
cause of education.
7 Model for Sustainable Education initiative
The educational initiative is targeted to different age group children.
This includes the toddlers, the primary school children and the
Secondary school children. Under the project a separate set of activities
is planned and executed. Let’s look at each of them.
Designed by- Swadeep Shikshan Vikas Shanstha 8
a. Anganvadi (Pre School Centers)
The word Anganwadi means "courtyard shelter". The initiative was
started in 1975 as part of the Integrated Child Development
Services program and was then having the twin objective of combating
child malnutrition and some basic education. It also had then the
objective of ensuring reach of immunization services to mothers
(expecting and lactating) and the new born.
A typical Anganwadi center provides basic health care in Indian villages.
It is a part of the Indian public health care system. Basic health care
activities include contraceptive counseling and supply, nutrition
education and supplementation, as well as pre-school activities.
Over the years, these Anganwadi centers have been seen as nutritional
support programs only. The centers and its workers typically would
gather the children, serve them the food and let them go back.
GHCL Foundation in order to ensure that in these Thirty Anganwadis
Centers of Veraval and Sutrapada Taluka some preschool educational
services also happen, roped in the expertise of SWADEEP an
organization involved with similar efforts with other agencies in
Gujarat. Swadeep developed an action program and with support from
the ICDS office at the block level a program was developed to work on
the pre schooling aspect of the children. Twenty Anganwadi centers
from 9 villages were selected and the processes initiated for preschool
education.
Designed by- Swadeep Shikshan Vikas Shanstha 9
The Vidhya Jyot Project approach is to create a simple, beautiful and an
effective atmosphere for preschool education for the toddlers in
collaboration with the local community. Due to this efforts since now for
almost year and a half children who had their names registered at these
centers have become more regular in Anganvadi centers.
SWADEEP carries out a number of activity which makes things happen
in these Anganwadi Centers like
The Anganvadi workers/Helpers training.
Balvadi Cultural Program.
Parents meeting.
Story tailing and singing song and role play activity
Children Activity with electronic Gazets .
Interactions with the local PRI and with the ICDS offices are part of the
overall sets of activities that happen.
The staff of Swadeep are in contact touch with the workers and attend to
their calls and reach out with small support like charts, posters, sltaes,
pencils, chalk, toys etc.
The work done has brought in accolades to two of the ICDS centers at
Veraval and Sutrapada. These two centers have bagged the best
performing anganvadi Center in 2017-18.

b. Primary School
According to the MDGs there is a promise by the Government to ensure
by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to
complete their full course of primary schooling. This however stands
vindicated in the location where we took up this as a challenge.
GHCL Foundation trust has undertaken a remarkable educational
initiative to ensure that children in its surrounding mining area are
provided with the opportunity and access to primary schooling.
Majority of the people who are engaged in the mining activity belong to
the poor households and for their children to be in school is a luxury.
GHCL has focused its attention to ensure 100% enrolment of children
belonging to these parents to be in school.

c. High School
Secondary high school education serves as a link between the elementary and
higher education, and plays a very important role in helping children to
choose a vocation and make a living out of it. Child's future as a future earning
member of the household depends a lot on the type of education she/he
receives at the secondary level. Apart from grounding the roots of education
of a child, secondary education can also be instrumental in shaping and
directing the child to a bright future. This stage of education serves to move
on higher secondary stage as well as to provide generic competencies that cut
across various domains of knowledge as well as skills. Providing secondary
education to all, both boys and girls, with a focus on quality education
assumes greater meaning today, when we consider the emerging challenges in
our society.
Our emphasis is to make secondary education of good quality available,
accessible and affordable to all young persons in the age group of 14-18.

When children complete his/her education at the 8th and 9thstd many of
them start facing some difficulties in the Std.10th and latter at the Std.12th .
They have to appear at the board level examinations that are conducted
across the entire state and many of them do not fair well. Understanding of
Mathematics, English, Science, Accountancy and Statistics are poor. Many
of them fail to qualify the pass grade in these board examinations on these
papers.
SWADEEP and GHCL Foundation decided to overcome this problem and
thereafter provided for extra tutors for Maths and English Subject in 5 high
schools. These are Saraswati Vidhyalay, Gorakhmadhi,Model School,
Gorakhmadhi, RMSA School Bolas, Bhagavati School-Harnasa and

secondary and higher secondary level in these 4 schools benefitted out of
this support.
The students are
taken through a test
to divided them into
four categories in the
order of their
grasping on the
subjects. Special
attention is given to
the students having
the lowest level of
grasping and are
slowly made to move
from the lower level
to the higher level. This support has paved way for the students to learn
the subject and clarify their doubts. Resource materials are also provided
to the children for them to practice the same while they are awy from the
school. The school teachers remain present during the exam preparation
time to guide students having difficulties. Periodic examinations are taken
for the students to dispel the fear of the board examination.
In addition to this special coaching and career counseling and also
counseling sessions are organized for the children in all these four schools.
The parents have been quite appreciative of this intervention.

10. Conclusion
The results impacts of this educational adventure will be visible
after a few years. However shades of them have started becoming
visible during the year of the work itself. The increase in the number
of children attending these centers is a clear indication that the
community has understood the worth of these centers and the
approach GHCL Foundation Trust, Sutrapada want to follow.
There was cooperation from the community and leadership in these
villages. The administration have seen how the village leadership
have come forth in ensuring that the centers are open and serve the
purpose of education. The school teachers are highly enthusiastic
about the interventions and are giving in their best to make the
intervention successful. The parents too are with the project. Finally
it is the children whose happiness has increased. They are more
interested in reaching to the schools. They have seen a meaning in
being in school. The school for them is a center that is adding to them
the knowledge – but alongside the job of learning as well.
