• Current segmentation practice is focused on addition of
segmentation marks to full numbers, not direct
assignment of abridged numbers by users of the abridged
edition
• Table 3 is a single table in the abridged edition, and split
into three tables (A-C) in DDC 23; Tables 5 and 6 are not
included in the abridged edition
• There is no easy way to indicate abridgment in the
Manual
Some challenges of an
“abridged” view of WebDewey
The world’s libraries. Connected.
• Segmentation marks (/) indicate the end of an Abridged Edition
15 number within a DDC 23 number in WebDewey
• If A15 number and DDC 23 numbers are the same, no
segmentation mark is given
• Segmentation marks are indicated in standard numbers
associated with individual class number entries (including
entries in tables), and in examples in segmentation instruction
notes
• Segmentation marks may be accompanied by segmentation
instructions

• Segmentation marks are not currently indicated in the
numbers associated with the following types of entries:
• Centered entry numbers
• Relocated and discontinued numbers
• Optional numbers
• Numbers in headings, notes (other than segmentation
instruction notes), and references
• Entries in Tables 3C and 6
