ROORKEE - 247 667, UTTARAKHAND, INDIA
Message from IITRAA President (Contd…)
In today's competitive environment, educational institutions compete with each other like corporates. Hence more is often not enough. Some alumni
feel that being a Central Govt. Institution, why should IITR need any other support? One has to only see kind of alumni support some of the older IITs
are able to get and what all they are able to do with it to pursue excellence. It also helps in improving the ranking. The Institute does need alumni help
in quite a few areas. Dean of Resources and Alumni (DORA) will be happy to share specifically what these areas are. Please do think of ways and
means to help the Institute to move faster on the path of excellence. Any help from you, individually and collectively, will be greatly appreciated.
I wish that you have an enjoyable stay at Roorkee and return with refreshed memories of good old days. I also hope that this event puts a new
enthusiasm in all to meet each other more regularly after return. I hope you will set a high bench mark in Alumni networking.
In the end, I wish you a healthy and long life full of happiness.
With best wishes,
(B.K. Chaturvedi)

UNIVERSITY OF ROORKEE - a review by Shri Shanker Vallabh Pande, B.E., Mechanical, 1959 Batch
Frequent occurrence of famines due to failure of rains in monsoon-driven agriculture in India especially the one
that visited the north western part in 1837-38 resulted in large scale distribution of relief to the affected farmers by
the East India Company. That gave the idea of construction of a canal system from the Ganga river flowing past
the area in a big way. Col Sir Proby Cautley of the Bengal Engineers was commissioned to plan and construct the
project, who also proposed to establish a school of civil engineering in Roorkee as an infrastructural work to
provide necessary local skill for construction of the huge project. In 1847, British colonial Lt Governor Sir James
Thomason decided to establish in Roorkee, the first Technical School of Asia and the British Empire. And
therefore, Thomason College of Civil Engineering came into being in 1854 for diploma in civil engineering alone.
Continued.....
The college was re-chartered in 1949 as University of Roorkee by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar
Lal Nehru. Before that, in 1948 Pt. Nehru visited Roorkee to make up his mind. Our batchmate Jai Prakash
Agarwal (JP 'Prince'), a student of Class VIII then, accompanied his father to attend the small function on Pt
Nehru’s visit. He took tea and shook hands with Pt Nehru in the lush green lawns of the college in the company of
handful of school faculty members plus local dignitaries invited by the Municipal Commissioner of Roorkee. Pt
Nehru paid another visit to the University to address the 1958 convocation, where in he was awarded an honorary
doctorate degree.
Till 1956, when we joined, University of Roorkee had only three disciplines of engineering — Civil, Electrical and
Mechanical; the intake used to be 100 including nominees from Nepal, Bhutan, Africa and the West Indies; it was a
3-year degree course. Architecture and Telecommunications were added in 1956-57 and the students of B Arch &
B Telecom of first batch joined in January '57. Influx of students, however, began in July '57 raising the batch
strength to a new high as 270, and then having a 4-year degree course from 1960 batch. This however resulted in
dilution of traditions, discipline and decor. State of Uttarakhand was carved out of U.P. in 2001 and Roorkee
became a part of the newly created district of Haridwar. University of Roorkee also metamorphosed into IIT-R.
Today IIT-R has a strength over 7,500 with nominees from 50 countries studying 73 courses across 21 academic
departments. IIT-R's overall NIRF ranking is 8th in the country and its Engineering Faculty is ranked 6th.
Comments from IIT-R students are flattering for 365-acre lush green pollution-free environ, clean spacious hostel
rooms and every room having high speed LAN network.
