How is color important? In what way does color help you understand meaning in a picture, movie, or design?

Color, Mood, and Tone in Art

Color

Color is the element of art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye.

There are three (3) properties to color.

Hue - the name we give to a color (red, yellow, blue, etc.).

Intensity - the strength and vividness of the color.

For example, we may describe the color blue as "royal" (bright, rich, vibrant) or "dull" (grayed).

Value - lightness or darkness. The terms shade and tint are in reference to value changes in colors.

Tone

In art, tone refers to the degree of lightness or darkness of an area. Tone varies from the bright white of a light source through shades of gray to the deepest black shadows. How we perceive the tone of an object depends on its actual surface lightness or darkness, color and texture, the background and lighting.

Mood

In art appreciation, the general atmosphere, or state of mind and feelings, that a work of art generates. For example, the mood of a painting could be disturbing or tranquil, dark or energetic.

• On a piece of paper explain the mood of each of the following pictures:

• Thomas P. Anshutz's A Rose, from The Metropolitan Museum of Art

• Pablo Picasso's The Tragedy from The National Gallery of Art

• Henri Matisse's Pianist and Checkers Players, The National Gallery of Art

Explain the ways in which the artists' color choices draw the viewer's attention, create a sense of depth, and convey mood or tone in each of the two paintings.

Then compare and contrast the two images.
