Jytte, I am seriously jealous of how close you are to Sweden and able to get these so much easier than we can. Wonderful double Lacies!

A bit off topic - but since the title is double the fun - Saw the surgeon yesterday - One Fun) The fusion is working and then Double The Fun) The brace no longer has a place on me -- Now comes P.T. ---- and my apologies to you in the weather pattern - This was taken early this morning -- That is sunshine - Wish I could send it (The sun not the brace) your way --
31
Debi Raitz01-03-201406:50 PM ET (US)IP: 69.14.220.22
Great news Mary! Yes, I would like just a ray or two of that nice warm sunshine. I just saw we are in for even colder temps next week. Brrrrrrrr!
32
Susie P01-03-201406:52 PM ET (US)IP: 166.205.55.34
great news!!!! Mary!! I know you are SO glad that you no longer have to wear the brace: glad everything is healing correctly, Yeah!!

Nancy DIetel01-03-201406:52 PM ET (US)IP: 74.105.137.82
Love all the doubles I am seeing. I particularly love the colored lacies, I am sure I don't have any of those beauties. I don't have many glass doubles, guess I have to look around more when I have the nerve to get out from under my cuddly blanket? Ten degrees this morning with 8" of snow. Supposed to go below zero tonight! Mary, so happy to see your smiling face without the brace! Good for you!

Great news Mary. Glad the back is on the mend. PS to self. Please read top of subject for month and post accordingly. At least the lady is not clear glass. And come to think of it, I don't have coloured doubles in glass. J

Nancy DIetel01-04-201409:18 AM ET (US)IP: 74.105.137.82
Is there no room for ceramic or metal doubles? Or maybe we have to do that another month.
37
Mary Kern01-04-201410:14 AM ET (US)IP: 72.220.213.56
Hi Nancy - I think we were doing ceramic next month and then maybe we could follow through in March with all misc doubles - like the metals and wood and soapstone - Whadda ya thimk Aunt Debi???
38
Debi Raitz01-04-201402:46 PM ET (US)IP: 69.14.220.22
There will probably be far less china and porcelain doubles next month than there are glass so we can put the "everything else" in with those next month.

Susie and Mary, How could you do this to me in my weakened state. Susie - This is a stick up. You have 24 hrs to pack Mr. Tabby and salts 40, 67, 68 and send them to me. Mary, I will have pity on you because of your back and only take salts 41,47 and 50The Asaltinator
72
Susie P01-07-201407:04 AM ET (US)IP: 75.103.187.136
Janelle,Too funny, Ms Asaltinator!!!! :):) and you just chose a few! Thank heavens this is such a long range stick-up I feel safe in gently declining as I love the "jewels" and I know for sure MrTabby isn't going anywhere, just taking him to the vet is exhausting!!!!!!! The only cat I ever had that didn't mind traveling was a Siamese, my first cat, I took him on weekend trips often, didn't realize how rare that was.....Hoping you find a couple beauties for a salt fix soon; we all understand that! Just lucky to have been on vacation so I could get mine taken care of. :):):)Susie

Jytte01-12-201401:11 AM ET (US)IP: 90.184.148.85 Love to see your beautiful salts.
This salt is very special for me. I traveled in Mexico - we had one day in Puebla - they had a flea-marked and my eyes immediatly found the two-collored salt. It has PUEBLA stamped/pattern in the blue bottom (1890 - 1900)

91
Mary Kern01-12-201407:06 PM ET (US)IP: 72.220.213.56
I have had a couple over the years too and they show up on eBay from time to time --
92
01-13-201407:20 AM ET (US)IP: 99.11.160.87
The handle appears to be as old as the salt, so my guess is that it is original to the piece. Where is one of those Antiques Roadshow guys when you need them?
93
Mary Kern01-13-201408:41 AM ET (US)IP: 72.220.213.56
Oh Carolyn - "WE" are those guys ---- lol lol lol They would tell you the wood was old - the glass was old - the screw was old - and then ask you WHAT the piece was used for ???duh??? -- oh I just tickled myself -----------

I was so excited to learn last year that the Antiques Roadshow was going to be in Detroit in June. I guess they had not been back to Detroit since they began the show many years earlier. But my excitement was dashed when I learned tickets were at least $500. I guess only rich people with very expensive antiques and collectibles can afford to go. It sure doesn't appear that way when you watch the show on TV. Anyone else have the show in their city in the recent past? Just curious if
Page 18 of 54Double the Fun - QuickTopic free message board hosting

anyone else knows what ticket prices were in their locations.Carolyn: Your wood handled double appears to be Bayel #BY 1527 in the 1923 French catalog. This is a rare instance where the descriptions are with the salts and the translation of "tige bois" is "rod wood". So wood handles were original to some doubles.Edited 01-13-2014 02:16 PM

WoW - so not worth the attending - The people that are standing in line behind the ones being interviewed do not look like they could pay that much just to have something appraised - We have The Calendar Show here in Del Mar three or four times a year and they do appraising there for a nominal fee so you will attend the show - Perhaps the Roadshow knows we get it cheaper --See Carolyn - I told you we were the Roadshow guys -- Jane makes a true statement - I spread the BS and Debi covers our butts -- What a team -- (Can I say butts?? Okay Debi covers our backs)

That might have just been a segment on PBS for raising money. But when I saw it, it said it was the only way to get tickets at that point. I looked it up online and your can send in an application for free tickets but if you are not drawn by random then you're out. I guess the $500 was for a definite ticket. Here's where they will be in 2014:Bismarck, ND May 31Santa Clara, CA June 7Birmingham, AL June 21Austin, TX June 28Albuquerque, NM July 19Chicago, IL July 26New York, NY August 9Charleston, WV August 16

I was traveling and missed the one time ARS came to Honolulu a few years ago. I suppose chances of being chosen for tv are slight and getting any helpful information not worth all the standing in line. Sour grapes?

Inez: I have added quite a few over the past 6 months. Besides the new countries of Poland, Denmark, Switzerland and Norway I have also recently added new companies in England and the USA. Still more to go. I have Spain to add too. I think I'll have to break up my row of flags (at the bottom of each country) into two rows now.On your #116 I thought it looked a lot like the Polish one, but I can see that the bridge and rims are a little different. It sure is close though. Might be just a drawing error. I didn't see anything else as close as that at all. You can put it down as a "maybe".

I couldn't find it in Neal, Mary. It's divided so it should be a DI type but it isn't there. There is no Scroll type (SC) like it either. Didn't look in the Acorn book but I don't think it's very helpful with hardly any pictures.

Divided salts are really a sort of sub-category within doubles, aren't they? I wonder if the original concept for any double was to serve two condiments, or would they just hold an extra measure of salt?Always curious.

Mary KernHi JANE - DI 20 is one of my little guys - He is only 3" long - 1 5/8" across and 1 3/8" tall and very strange for a Lacy with no side stippling

- Clear as a bell - similar to some of the "basket" salts - ie: Fruit and such ---Okay JYTTE - Just wanted you to know I had your back front and both sides covered -- lolNANCY - I think divided vs double is like master vs table - all the same - It was posted some time ago somewhere in open salt land that someone who had been traveling found a divided/doubled master/table salt at a restaurant with salt in one side and paprika in the other - Maybe that was a new version of their use and then again maybe a carry over from the past -- Unfortunately Martha Stewart/or/Steward was not around to splain it all to us -- All of the "age experienced" people I have talked to over the years - remember the bowls and even some the spoons - but none of them ever saw a divided/doubled -- Even my granny that knowingly and with great glee cursed me with this obsession had no info to pass along --

Yep - But the more thoughts we throw out the better chance we have of perhaps unknowingly getting a correct guess - Just think of how many combinations of spices there were then that could have rested in those little bowls -- "Open Salt Mind Games" -- Let the Play Offs begin.........

Debi Raitz01-20-201407:53 PM ET (US)IP: 69.14.220.22
We call them double salts but I am pretty sure in Europe they were used for salt and pepper. They made infinitely more of them in Europe than US glassmakers made. Maybe US makers made them to satisfy European immigrant consumers in the late 1800s. And open salts in general continued to be made longer in European countries than over here. There are not many open salts made past 1910-20 over here but there's still catalog pages full of them in France, Germany and other European countries. Whatever their intended purpose or marketing ploy, they could be used for whatever the consumer wanted them for, salt & pepper, salt & paprika, salt & mustard (with pepper in a shaker), two types of salt, etc.NOTE: Even in old foreign catalogs, they were called "Double Salts" if you check the translations on some of the old catalogs where I also have the price pages included.

Hi Mary, I just took these photo's to upload when I saw your new baby salt. I have it's brother (obviously separated at birth.) I guess you could say they only hold a pinch of salt. The one with the metal holder has the same size bowls and I think it is French.

Attached is a photo of the knife rest taken with the iPad with the home button on the left so technically it should be wrong on PC 's . It is not as classy as the French One Debi, very basic like a number of the plain and coloured ones attributed to many makers. Mary, you can have it, PICK UP only.
223
Janelle Jefferson01-26-201402:07 AM ET (US)IP: 124.170.225.111
Ok, it worked, on my iPad the photo is the correct way up, on my PC it is upside down. So Jytte it is not how you are sending the photo's but how they are taken. And some iPads and tablets will detect if it is upside down and correct the orientation whereas PC's will not. You can lock the tablet so it does not rotate or just remember that the home button is on the right when taking a shot. I guess it is a good feature that no matter how you pick up the iPad , you can use it that way unless you want to take photo's. Now we just have to remember to do correctly so everyone can see it the right way up. J

http://opensalts.us/References/Fostoria/Fostoria.htmlJanelle, now that I see it better, it's more like Fostoria #95. But it's most likely not US made. I have those colored salts and some do have an English registration number. I can't find it in any of the English catalog images I have. I guess we'll have to wait for Mary to pick it and research it thoroughly.
225
Janelle Jefferson01-26-201403:29 AM ET (US)IP: 124.170.225.111
Yes Debi, Definitely looks like the Fostoria 95. I guess a lot of firms copied them. I do not have any with any registration marks or numbers in them. Mine are all plain. Did they not realise we would eventually want to know more about them. :)

Is'nt it amazing the variety of salts we all have. Looking back over this month and previous months, to see the vast collection of the beautiful salts that we have all accumulated is fantastic. Could you imagine if they were all exhibited together ? I must admit that sometimes I think I have collected enough, then you all start showing your treasures and I am caught up again. Thank you everyone and also a continued thank you to Debi for making it all possible to be part of this group that understands and shares this obsession for collecting salts.J

Hi P.J. - The book Inez wrote was of her salts only and this topic board is for anyone and everyone to share their collections on a monthly basis - Inez will post her doubles and condiments and any other salts she has written books on here also to share her collection with us - So there is no duplication of her book with this topic as some of us - I know it is hard to believe - just might have a double salt she does not - lol lol -- Please keep posting your salts here even if they have been shown before - We are also keeping track of how many categories a single salt can show up in and also sometimes we may attain a new one and it did not make it in a previous topic but can be shone in a current topic -Last month was frosted and there were a couple of frosted doubles that also show here and may have shown in one of our animal topics -- It is just a fun way for us to share our salts with each other as the chances of us all making it to each others homes is quite slim -- Although that accomplishment is on my Salt Bucket List - lol lol - But then living long enough to do it is on there too --- (Make note to self - Get Janelle and Jytte to move closer ...)So please share your salts with us P.J. - I can re-drool on a moments notice -- Take care and thanks for stopping by on one of your few sitting times -

I believe what Inez was putting together several years ago for the West Virginia Museum of American Glass (WVMAG) was on center handled dishes and serving pieces. That included a lot of double salts and several salt collectors sent pictures to Inez. If she has a book on salts I am unaware of it but I'm sure she'll let us know about it.Yes, there would be times when a salt will fit into several categories and maybe even month after month. They should still be posted even if we just saw them one or two months ago. If we never reposted items then I guess this monthly topic would be obsolete. The other day I went through some of the past topics and ended up spending well over an hour just looking at what everyone else has. It's a fun way to pass some time. The diversity of open salts is truly amazing. Anyone remember first seeing the H&J book 5000 Open Salts and thinking there couldn't possibly be that many? Turns out there's more than 10
Page 45 of 54Double the Fun - QuickTopic free message board hosting
Double the Fun - QuickTopic free ... 4/3/2015
times that amount! I wish more people would post pictures regularly, but we still see plenty to drool over, don't we?What Janelle said is very true. Many years ago, I remember that meetings were the only time to see other's salts and talk about them. And that was only true for people who got a chance to attend meetings. Quick Topic has changed that and it helps keep our collections on our minds much more often. And it easily brings people together from all over the world. So glad we have people from Australia, Denmark and Canada who chat here regularly with us. I know there are a lot more lurkers I wish would join in. We'd love to hear about and see more collections. Maybe people don't know they can type in any language they want and we can translate it. And they could do the same. It's very easy to do now with a simple click on the mouse.

267
Nancy C Villaverde02-20-201405:41 PM ET (US)IP: 76.183.241.97
Right you are, Debi. #79 looks like the outside profile, and #80 seems to show a central divider. I remember posting my green one some time ago and one of the collectors knowledgeable about older salts suggesting a possible country of origin, but I've lost track of any information I had. I may be thinking of a vaseline one about this size that isn't divided. I'm thinking an attribution to Poland is likely. I've never heard of the name Zabkowice--place or factory? I'll check that now.
268
Nancy C Villaverde02-21-2014
Debi, a similar salt is also shown in H&J, page 279 in the Edward Moore & Co. catalog reprint, #302. Just happened to see it in passing.
