European Network of Centres of Excellence for Research and Education in Digital Culture

Initially three objectives:

1. How do we share the enormous amounts of research which exist in memory institutions and universities?

2. How can this sharing help to develop critical thought and methods?

3. How can we understand the new knowledge production life cycle?

Initially three tentative answers:

1. How do we share the enormous amounts of research which exist in memory institutions and universities? Distributed European Electronic Resource (DEER)

2. How can this sharing help to develop critical thought and methods?European Masters and Doctorates

3. How can we understand the new knowledge production life cycle?Research Matrices

Thematic Network chose seven workpackages.

1. Vision and Structure2. Expansion

3 3. Research Topics/Implications 2 4. Requirements/Topics for European Masters

1 5. Identify/Define Broadband Pilots6. Foundation for DEER

7. Management of Project

1. Vision and Structure

National Harmonising Team

The national representative and a small team of 5-10 persons paid by national governments could work with the MINERVA national representatives to produce directives to assure that their country takes up the standards and solutions developed at the European level or at least employs methods which are compatible with these standards. Compliancy with such directives could become a criterion for federal and EU funding.

b. Focussed on two clusters of questions that could integrate research of IPS and serve as

top-down preparation for DEER

1) DILIGEANTAccess to Cultural Heritage in Memory

Institutions, Research and Industry

2) CO-CREATEPersonal and Collaborative creation

3. Research Topics/Implications

c. Identified two fundamental questions forlong-term research

1) Dynamic Knowledge

2) New Models of Culture

3. Research Topics/Implications

d. Identified five further implications

1) Massive New Content

2) Changing Methods of Scholarship

Used experiences of Scuola Normale and Bologna to identify requirements and topics forEuropean Masters and Doctorates.

5. Identify/Define Broadband Pilots

5. Identify/Define Broadband Pilots

a i) Identified three integrating themes:

1) Intelligent Multimedia Museums

2) Hypermedia On Line

3) Hypermedia E-Learning

5. Identify/Define Broadband Pilots

a ii) Used these three integrating themes to define 23 projects.

5. Identify/Define Broadband Pilots

b) CINECA and Universidad Complutense carried out a concrete broadband pilot using

images of the Vatican fresco Map of Bologna.

5. Identify/Define Broadband Pilots
