Encrypting a computer or laptop with Windows Bitlocker NOTE: You must have Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise or Windows 8 Professional or Enterprise version to use bitlocker on your computer. All other versions of Windows do not have bitlocker enabled. Your computer must also have a TPM chip and it must be activated through system BIOS or you will need to have a USB flash drive connected to serve as the TPM chip. If you have any questions or need assistance please contact the Dentistry help desk. Open Windows Explorer In the Devices list, select by a single click and then right click on the drive you want to encrypt

Click on “Turn on Bitlocker” The Bitlocker Drive Encryption window will be displayed. Click on next.

The following screen will be displayed. Click on next.

The following screen will be displayed. Click on restart now. Your computer will reboot. Login to windows as you normally would.

Once your computer reboots and you login the following screen will be displayed. Click on next.

The next box asks how you want your recovery key. We are recommending the “Save to File” option. Follow the instructions on the screen to save your recovery key file. Click “Next”.

The following screen will be displayed. Click on box next to Run Bitlocker system check. Click on continue. Your computer will reboot and you will need to login again.

Once you login your drive will start to be encrypted. This may take 1-60 minutes depending on the amount of data on your device.

Once the encryption is done all new and existing data will be encrypted.
