“Assessment” vs “Test”

Why say “Assessment” instead of “Test”?• “Assessment” means more than just a “test”.

“Assessments” may include:• portfolios - a collection of student work

• anecdotal records - teacher notes on how students are doing

• presentations - students showing what they know

• tests - classroom tests, state tests, other

• projects - students demonstrating what they know

• other

Two Basic Types of Assessments

Criterion-referenced or Standards-Based• student performance is

measured against a set standard

• Norm-referenced- student performance is measured against the performance of other students
