What the Course Is

• Provide an additional opportunity for twelfth grade students to be College and Career Ready (CCR) in English Language Arts (ELA)

• Increase the number of WV students who are CCR in ELA upon graduation

What the Course Is NOT

• Remedial English• For students who are Below Mastery in ELA• For students who are more than two years

behind, according to data• Punishment for doing poorly on one

assessment

End of Course Assessment

• COMPASS® Writing Skills Test– Aligned with WV HEPC Series 21 Freshmen

Readiness Assessment and Placement Standards– Results considered for student placement in

credit- bearing college English courses with ACT and SAT taking precedence

– Scores range from 1 to 99 with a score of 71 needed to enroll in a college credit-bearing course

COMPASS® Writing Skills Test

• Fall 2012 Results– Outperformed students from the previous year– Increase from 24% to 53% in meeting benchmark– Average Writing Skills score increased from 49.7 to

Transitioning to NxGen Mathematics

Transition year 2013-14

Districts have the option to offer NxGen course Math II (Math 10).

NxGen mathematics is not required, but is optional, by policy at the high school level for 2013-14.

Transitioning to NxGen Mathematics

Math I (Math 9) is required by policy.

NxGen mathematics beyond Math I (Math 9) is not required, but is optional, until subsequent years (as the 9th grade students in 2014-15 progress through high school).
