reason for being here, hopes for the day etc?!)

Three types of grant

• Research – April deadline for EOIs• Student – as above• Development – October 31st 2007 deadline

Overall very similar style of management - so today will cover them all but please chip in with queries as we

go along - or write on a “post it” for

later in the afternoon!

How to write a successful grant application

Our team of evaluators tell us that it helps if…• You not only have a good idea/ innovative - but

explain the rationale clearly – with, where appropriate literature review and context( eg CETLs), methodology, theoretical framework, data collection, how you will undertake your analysis, evaluation etc.

• It is realistic: scale, time, costings• Demonstrates home institution support and/ or works

with other partners where appropriate.

How to write a successful application cont...

Crucial…• Have thoughts about dissemination of your findings/

outcomes/ resources. These could be via: – networks, workshops, seminars, papers,

report, articles for in house and/ or ESCalate publications, conferences and events –plus increasingly CDs, DVDs, web based video clips etc

Costings and finance - 1

We can give you funds ( usually in thirds) for:

• Travel, consumables ( eg paper, photocopying), meetings, refreshments, speaker fees, secretarial/ researcher and transcriber costs bought in

• We cannot pay salaried staff costs.

Costings 2

• FEC and VAT. If your institution levies these they need to be costed into your application.

• We expect to see match funding as a demonstration of the commitment of your institution to your work.

• This can often be in terms of your time/ space etc

Our evaluation process for EOIs / and project bids

• If all the previous points are covered effectively, then the external evaluation team can usually recommend funding.

• The ESCalate team then make final decisions according to funding available.

Running the project

• The responsibility for invoicing is YOURS!• Stay in touch – especially if you need to adjust/

change details etc.• Discuss administration issues with Teresa• Email or phone Julie over substantial issues over the

content etc.

Some final points…

• You do not need to be a professor – and / or in what may be termed a prestigious institution!

• Our remit is to encourage good practice in teaching and learning wherever it is found

• We can support you as little or much as you need in the day to day running of the project ( e g by setting up a mentoring scheme).

• An ESCalate project often leads to other things….!
