Executive Summary
For StaffFor Students
Learning Relationship Management (LRM) is a new category of learning technology that gives you
the ability to make sure that all your people have the core relationships they need to achieve great
things. Unlike SIS and LMS tools that ignore relationships, LRM recognizes that, at its core, learning is
a fundamentally relational endeavor. LRM gives you the tools to make sure that all your learners have
mentors and coaches, that they belong to learning communities, that they have a strong purpose for
their education, and have a clear learning pathway to pursue that purpose.
When all your students have those core assets, they'll surprise you with how far they'll go.
LRM
P E O P L E | P U R P O S E | PAT H W A Y S
Your best students have most of these assets
✓ Strong preparation ✓ Extracurriculars
✓ Support at home ✓ Mentors
✓ Intrinsic motivation ✓ Networks
✓ Grit ✓ Resources
✓ Positive peer relationships ✓ Social capital
LRMs take an asset-based approach to learning and achievement rather than an interventionist
approach to failure prevention.
The core idea is that people who have the following assets are much more likely to succeed in
school, in work and in life.
Students who have a clear purpose for their life and education, who can visualize a path to that
purpose, and who have the right support from people along the way are much more likely to
succeed. And even when they fail, they are able to pick themselves up and keep going.
So the big idea here is to be Proactive. Don’t wait for students to fail and then try to intervene.
Instead, proactively help everyone in your organization to build the assets that they need to
pursue a meaningful purpose for their lives.
LRM's Big Idea
We learn in context of:
1. People who support us and provide us with accountability
2. Goals - a long term purpose and a pathway to reach that purpose
The landscape according to LRM:
Where Does LRM Fit?
There are 3 major systems that most schools and companies use to manage the education and
training of their people: 1. SIS/HR2. LMSs3. CRMs
Physical Equivalent Description
SIS/HR Systems Canonical source of data, manages transactions
LMS Where people assemble for traditional classes
CRM Sales tool
We believe that LRM is the fourth and most important system system because it recognizes that,
at its core, learning and achievement are fundamentally relational activities.
The Experience of LRM For Students
LRM helps you prepare every student with the three major predictors of success:
Purpose Successful students have clear goals for their educations. LRM helps every student set goals and track their progress towards achieving them.
PathsSuccessful students have a concrete plan to achieve their goals. LRM helps every student build a plan and stay focused on achieving it.
PeopleSuccessful students have strong relationships. LRM gives every student access to a personal coach, a network of mentors, and a community of peers.
LRM equips advisors with solutions to their biggest challenges:
Too much data to track LRM puts information for every student and every past conversation at their fingertips.
Too many students to support LRM flags the students who need their help the most right now.
Too few resources to help LRM lets them recommend skill-building apps and mentors, tailored to each student.
Too siloedLRM connects them with faculty, staff, and mentors across your community to collaborate on serving students effectively.
The Experience of LRM For Advisors
FIDELIS Learning App Platform
Fidelis provides all the tools you need to build engrossing learning experiences Learning Apps can be moderated or unmoderated
We think the market of LMSs and MOOCs is crowded because many think that if you build a good enough course, students will learn. In our view though, learning is a fundamentally goal-oriented social endeavor where -- with the right motivation, mentoring, coaching and community -- a decent library and internet connection are enough for most students to learn. So the focus of our platform is primarily on outcomes and learning relationships.
That being said, our customers need good, simple tools with which to build classes. So that's what we've developed. With an emphasis on simplicity, Fidelis's learning app authoring tools are template-based and take only 2-3 minutes to get started building.
We call courses on Fidelis's platform learning apps to signify that they don't have to be traditional classes. They can be anything from a 5 minute tutorial to a 500 hour degree. Most customers build learning apps to cover specific topics in depth, then modularly assemble apps into courses and learning plans.
Rich-Media Content Templates
We've tried to be exhaustive in providing customers with simple but powerful tools for rendering content for their members. If you need a template that you don't see, just ask, we've either got it ready now, are building it, or will build it on demand.
Learning App Marketplace
To avoid reinventing perfectly good wheels, Fidelis has developed a way for learning communities to both share and sell their courses to members of other learning communities and to other communities directly.

FIDELIS Micro-Credentials & Digital Badges
Building better people search A 21st century education needs 21st century credentials
Demonstrate your skills in a simple, branded wayIt just doesn't cut it that after 16 years of school and over 32k hours studying, graduates have only four
pieces of data to describe their capabilities a) degree b) school c) year of graduation and d) GPA.
And resume's are even worse because although they allow people to make claims, they provide
almost no mechanism to validate or see evidence of claims.
Digital Badges are micro-credentials that solve problems for students, schools, and employers by
providing organizations with a way to vouch for people that they've mastered some combination of
capabilities. Students benefit because they can use badges to customize their educational pathways.
Employers benefit because badges make it easier to find appropriately trained and educated people.
And schools benefit because they get self-motivated students who are less likely to drop out.
Badges vs Apps
Learning Apps are formative learning experiences. Students don't earn badges for completion.
Badges instead are conferred by learning communities for mastery according to standards.
Badge exams can include all the assessment tools available in learning apps. But unlike Apps, they
are purely summative assessments -- with no intent to teach, just to determine what a student
knows and what they can do.Badges on Fidelis are real credentials exclusively for real achievements There is no place for badges for participation, conferred like so many trophies to make people feel
good or raise self-esteem. After all, self-esteem laid atop a superficial sheen, is a sorry substitute
for confidence built on real achievement.

Fidelis's platform improves badges in 7 critical ways
SearchIf a user learns something important, but can't be discovered through search as a result, it's a wasted opportunity
Brand Degrees are not all created equal and neither are badges. On Fidelis, the badge is the logo of the conferrer of the badge
LeveledThe idea that one is either certified or not is silly. Everyone's expertise lies along a spectrum and so to be trusted, all badges have to have levels that represent that spectrum.
SelectiveIf it's easy to get, it's not very valuable. On Fidelis badges have clear criteria that has to be met. And our badges go all the way from "Basically Familiar" to "Leading Expert".
TransparentIn 7 seconds on Fidelis, you can figure out if you think a badge is trustworthy, by noting the brand of the conferrer, quickly looking at the topics covered, and looking at the pass rate (selectivity). Additionally, you can see sample questions at the various levels.
Convenient Fidelis's tools make it a snap to build badge exams, to administer them, and to upload third party badges along with evidence that the user has earned that badge.
Employer focusBadges are all tagged with common keywords found in job requisitions and resumes, making it easy both for employers to identify the badges they're looking for, and for job seekers to find badges that will make them more competitive for the kinds of jobs they want.
What People are Saying about LRM
"LRM is not only an interesting product or integration option to watch, but also a movement any institution serious about academic innovation should join.”
- Brian Fleming Senior Analyst, Eduventures
What are the results?
“The biggest change for the coaches since introducing LRM is the type of conversations that are held with the students. The coaches have been able to move away from the ‘process’ and focus on the student’s goals and needs. This may sound simple, but it has made a huge a positive impact. Not only do our students love the individual attention, but it also empowers the coaches.”- Student Services Coach
“We found that LRM users completed the enrollmen and transfer credit processes at higher rate, had lower course withdrawals and drops, exhibited higher GPA in their initial courses and registered for subsequent classes earlier than those in the larger student population.”- American Public University System
“[LRM] is an emerging category that has the potential to solve critical problems – attrition, the skills gap, and lifelong learning."
- Tom Vander Ark Founder and CEO, Getting Smart

What’s the big idea behind LRM?
Existing education platforms focus
on individual students and courses.
But everyone knows that students
learn best through relationships.
Just compare the impact of flash
cards or textbooks vs. a great
mentor or team. And thus, LRM is
the first platform that allows
institutions to centrally scale and
manage learning relationships
across campus.
Alumni Mentors

LRM Scales
Relationships
Collaboration Tools
In addition to complementing the above platforms, LRM is a complete substitute for the
following systems:
Retention tools: LRM not only provides early alerts but solutions to help the students they
identify
Badging platforms: LRM makes it easy to assess and award badges for specific
competencies
Mentoring software: LRM has everything you need to start or support a mentoring
program out of the box
SMS platform: LRM allows you to communicate with students both via app and text
message
And if you're launching a competency-based education (CBE) program, LRM even replace
your LMS since it's built for self-paced, always-available training on key competencies.
CRM is the perfect tool to track the admissions process
but isn’t great for serving current students. So
it provides a natural handoff to LRM to
convert and retain admitted
students.
SIS is the canonical source of
student data but can’t help build
relationships between your
students and campus
community. So it provides the
backbone for LRM to build
relationships on top of.
LMS is essential for teaching courses but it’s not
well-suited to helping students succeed in them. So its
data serves as the basis for LRM to facilitate class
communities and academic support.
Analytics tools are great for understanding the challenges
on campus but they can’t help you do anything about
them. So LRM lets you take action to solve the significant
issues facing your students.
In addition to complementing the above platforms, LRM is a complete substitute for
traditional Retention tools that merely provide alerts about struggling students. LRM not
only provides that functionality but a whole range of solutions for serving those students.

Who else is in this space?
Eduventures noted that “Fidelis is the first true mover in this market.”
However, there's two other pure play LRM pioneers as well as several
retention tools that offer some of LRM’s functionality. Note that if you
have LRM, you don’t need a stand-alone Retention CRM since LRM does
everything they can do and much more.

What data can we get from LRM?
Relationship Data - Every time a student clicks in LRM, it's tracked. This means, you can easily find out:
How often are your students connecting with the campus community?
How many mentors do they have?
How long has it been since they connected with their mentors and coach?
Outcome Data - In addition to tracking progress towards their goals, LRM integrates with other platforms to give you real-time alerts on:
How many goals have students completed?
 How are they performing academically?
Are they enrolled for next semester?
How long since your last checkin?
How’s their GPA looking?
Define based on your key metrics

“In 2014, we completed a successful pilot of the new ClearPath Learning Relationship Management
(LRM) System, a social media tool that fosters engagement and collaboration. The results:
ClearPath users, on average, completed the enrollment and transfer credit process at a higher rate,
had lower withdrawals and drops, exhibited a higher GPA in their initial courses, and registered for
subsequent classes earlier than those in the larger student population.” -Annual Report Qualitative
“The biggest change for the coaches since introducing LRM is the type of conversations that are

the student’s goals and needs. This may sound simple, but it has made a huge a positive impact.
Not only do our students love the individual attention, but it also empowers the coaches (which is
the perfect term for describing what they do). I have always said that LRM would change the way
the university operates, and so far I have not been proven wrong.”

PILOTING LRM
Why do a pilot?Fidelis believes so strongly in the power of Learning Relationship
Management (LRM) that we prefer to begin new partnerships by proving
our impact. And there’s no better way to do that than running a pilot test
tao compare to your overall student population.
How does the pilot work? There are five simple steps
to initiate a pilot:
We’ll PROVIDE A FULL,
PREMIUM ONBOARDING
EXPERIENCE — from leadership
alignment to management
training
We’ll SET UP BASIC
INTEGRATIONS with your
SIS and LMS but won’t require
any heavy lifting from your
technology team
What does an ideal pilot look like?In our experience, the best pilots have the following characteristics:
Crystal clear objectives
All parties agree on what success looks like
Big and long enough to be statistically meaningful
We recommend at least 500 students, each with an
assigned coach, over the course of 9-15 months
Strong commitment to a fair test
Leadership and advisors are all bought-in to an apples-to-
apples comparison
“Goldilocks”-level implementation
Just enough integration with other platforms to get the
pilot off-the-ground but not so much as to drive your tech
team crazy
Start at the beginning
Applying LRM to newly admitted students provides the
cleanest read on the platform’s impact
Keep your eye on ROI
In addition to measuring LRM against objectives, make
sure that the platform pays for itself through increased
enrollment and retention
You’ll COMPARE THE
RESULTS of the sample
group against those of the
control group to determine
whether LRM is right for your
institution
Together, we’ll
CHOOSE A SAMPLE GROUP
to participate in LRM (e.g., 10%
of the incoming class) and a
control group (the other 90%)
We work together to
SET SHARED BENCHMARKS
for Conversion, Retention, and
Staff Satisfaction
