*Stop Press: Glazier‟s Company‟s Professional Development Awards Reinstated! See
Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com/Professional_Development-19.htm . Short duration
Professional Development Awards help practitioners with at least five years‟ working
experience to broaden their professional skills, whether by moving towards the attainment of
accredited status as conservators, or by developing their creative skills. These Awards are
particularly aimed at professionals unable to leave their work for long periods. They can
enable attendance at short courses or provide short studio placements under expert tuition.

Entry Deadline 01/04/11: Announcing Work Placement Awards from The Worshipful
Company Of Glaziers & Painters Of Glass 2011-12. The Worshipful Company Of Glaziers &
Painters Of Glass is pleased to announce that once again they will offer an „Award For
Excellence‟ and two „Ashton Hill Awards‟ for the year 2011-12. These are work placement
Awards. The deadline for entry is 1st.
April, interviewing 12th.
April, 2011. Application details
available below and on the Glaziers‟ Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com . The aim of all
the Glaziers‟ Company‟s Awards is to raise standards of work within the craft, particularly in
the U.K., by offering additional learning experiences to enhance the skills of potential
workers. Applications are invited from individuals within the first five years of their training
who are intending to undertake a long term career in stained glass, preferably within the U.K.
Recently I made a concentrated effort to contact each of our past Award winners. As a result I
can report that of the 14 who have completed „Awards For Excellence‟, 9 of them are
working in glass today, 2 are actively seeking work in glass and one other with whom I could
not make contact is believed to be working in glass. Of the 20 who have completed the
shorter „Ashton Hill Awards‟, 14 are working in glass, one is seeking to return to doing so
after health problems and another is completing her degree studies. This is a very positive set
of outcomes which demonstrates the contribution which these awards are making to
professional stained glass work. You can read a bit more about these Awards, and see lists of
the past winners names by visiting the relevant pages on the Glaziers
Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com/award_for_excellence-20.htm and

Ivana Šrámková, will focus on creating sculptures, made in cast glass in combination with
natural and man-made found objects.
06/09/1114/09/11. „Out Of Thin Air‟. The main direction of Michael Rogers‟ masterclass
will be the development of ideas with an emphasis on the individual‟s inclinations and
intuitive choices. Technically the focus will be on a combination of cast and blown glass
compositions, assembled hot.
06/09/1114/09/11. „Painting On Glass: Developing A Personal Iconography‟. In this class,
lead by Cappy Thompson, students will paint flat glass and small vessel forms, applying

*15/09/1116/09/11. Plymouth College Of Art Announce: A Call For Academic Papers And
Practice-Led Case Studies For A Special Research Workshop On Glass: Regeneration in
Glass: A Sustainable and Financially Viable Future. As Part Of The International
Conference: Making Futures The Crafts As Change-Maker In Sustainably Aware Cultures.
Website: http:makingfutures.plymouthart.ac.uk Making Futures will be held on Thursday
15th.
and Friday 16th.
September 2011 at Dartington Hall on the inspiring Dartington Estate,
Devon, GB. Regeneration in Glass: A Sustainable and Financially Viable Future will focus
on the difficulties faced by the Studio Glass Movement, and how current research has the
potential to support the development of new micro-business start-ups in this area. If there is
to be a future for the studio glass, part of the answer must be in finding innovative ways of
coping with ever-increasing energy costs and addressing local and global environmental
sustainability concerns. Technological advance is key, but the workshop will also take us on a
brief journey into the past, exploring the history of the Studio Glass Movement and it‟s
gradual decline over the years, noting how industrialisation has impacted upon current
working practices within studio glass workshops and enquiring into what we might learn
from forms of pre-industrial technical and reflective innovation. A feature of the workshop
will be recent work by Ian Hankey on a small, low cost glass furnace that can be turned on
and off extremely quickly in comparison with conventional furnaces. Supported by Plymouth
College Of Art Research Committee, Safelame Ltd, Members of the Society Of Glass
Technology, and Dartington Crystal, early test melts of glass cullet indicate that the 25kg
furnace can reach 1300 degrees C in only 4 hours without damage to the combustion chamber
or crucible. As the furnace can be turned off just as quickly, the potential for the reduction of
energy costs and emissions are impressive, as well as the implications for the financial
viability of small „entry level‟ businesses start-ups in studio glass. We invite papers and
presentations from practitioners and scholars in this field, including those with an expert
knowledge of the history of UK and international Studio Glass, who might want to contribute
to this special research workshop. Note that a third and final call for papers associated with
Making Futures has just been released, with a closing date of 1st.
May 2011. However, it is
likely we will extend the closing date by a few weeks to take account of the inclusion of this
new session on glass and its possible futures. For full details please visit the conference

Form, 1930-1960”. October 17-21, 2011 - 30 Hours: 09:00 – 12:00/14:00 – 17:00; Teacher:
Matthew Urban; Price: €1,500.00. The Abate Zanetti School. Abate Zanetti Calle Briati 8/B-

class, Website: www.abatezanetti.it/corsi_dettaglio.asp?corso=58
This class will reinterpret the Italian glass blowing techniques that defined Italian glass in the
modern era between 1930-1960. We will make the analogy between glass techniques and
language. The class goal is to expand your technical vocabulary of glassblowing techniques
in order make a more personal statement in your work. A broad survey of hotworking
techniques, including various types of cane and murrine processes will be demonstrated. The
incalmo process as well as more obscure patterning process like pullegusso, primavera, and
merletto will be topics of exploration. Please bring examples of Italian glass that interests
you, and we will do or best to faithfully replicate and talk about the process and ways to
make it your own. Bring your sketchbooks.
Matthew Urban began his studies at Philadelphia College of Art and Design as an industrial
design major. Interested in modern design, Matthew then began to focus on the history of
glass designed in Italy from the 1930-1960. In 1997 Matthew took a course at the Studio at
Corning with Maestro Gianni Toso which inspired him pursue a career in glass. Since that
time Matthew has studied in Italy and worked with numerous Italian glass Maestros. Matthew
has been an artist in residence at The Studio at Corning and works with Corning Museum of
Glass as a gaffer for the museum‟s “Glass Lab” design projects. Matthew was awarded his
masters degree in sculpture 2007 from Illinois State University. He currently owns and
operates is own hot shop in Normal Illinois. Matthew has work in the Museum of Art and
Design in New York and work in the Bergstrom Mahler Museum Wisconsin.

*Contemporary Glass Society Loses Arts Council England Funding!!!!
We are very sorry to have to tell you that we have not been successful in securing Arts
Council funding as part of their National Portfolio for 2012 onwards. This means that we
have lost £50,000.00 core funding for the Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) on a turnover
of approximately £72,000.00. Needless to say, this is very disappointing for us. Since its
beginning in 1997, the CGS has grown from an organisation of just 150 members to one with
nearly 700. It provides vital services for the glass community, connecting and sustaining its
members through its website, publication, mentoring programmes, exhibitions and
conferences. We have gone for strength to strength, and this is in part due to the financial
security that being one of Arts Council England‟s regularly funded organisations gave us.
Feedback from our application confirmed that it is was strong on all counts when considered
on a regional level but that when judged nationally it was not considered a priority. We shall
have to rethink everything we do beyond April 2012, when our current funding ends. But we
are also determined to face this challenge with a positive outlook. The fact that we have such
a dynamic and involved membership - the largest network of glass makers in the UK - not to
mention our hardworking and dedicated management team, means we are in a strong position
to face the future. We will do all we can to maintain our services, and we will of course be
looking for other sources of funding, including Arts Council England‟s Grants for the Arts,
which is still open to us. We know the Arts Council England (ACE) had to make some
difficult decisions, but we do not feel cutting £50,000.00 from CGS was a right decision. We
are the only organisation dedicated to support and promote Contemporary Glass Making, an
art form which is severely threatened, with the loss of many University courses and skills
from industry almost completely disappeared. We spend every penny of their money wisely
and they get incredible value for money. What you can do: It is important that the Arts
Council gets feedback on their decisions. We need you to speak up on our behalf; we need
you to tell ACE how important we are to you. Tell them what we do and why we are needed.
This will help to provide a context for any funding decisions they make in the future, as well
as letting them know what we think about their decision now! Please email and write as soon
as possible to; Alan Davey, Email: chiefexecutive@artscouncil.org.uk or to address; Mr.
Alan Davey. Arts Council England – Head Office. 14 Great Peter Street, Westminster,
London. SW1P 3NQ. ENGLAND, or Ros Robins, Email: ros.robins@artscouncil.org.uk .
Postal address, Ms. Ros Robins. Regional Director. Arts Council England. 82 Granville
Street, Birmingham. West Midlands. B1 2LH. ENGLAND. We will be meeting in the near
future to review our budgets and planning beyond April 2012. We will let you know the
shape of things as soon as we are able to form a strong and positive plan for the future. With
Best wishes Pam Reekie & Victoria Scholes The Contemporary Glass Society. C/o.

*Warm Glass UK Announces 2011 Prize Winners. Three artists, who work in glass, have
been honoured in the Warm Glass UK Prize 2011 after a record number of entries from
around the world. Leading glass art suppliers Warm Glass UK, based in Wrington, North
Somerset, made the awards in the competition which this year had the theme “environment”
and categories for „Students‟ „Artists‟ and „Bullseye Glass‟. The winner of the „Students‟
prize 2011 is Dóra Varga, who received over 1400 votes from members of the public to
snatch the title. This prize was open to all those currently studying a further or higher
education course and received an impressive 47 entries this year. Dóra, who created a house
of cards structure, said: “The most important aspect when creating my objects is to use the
glass in a state that expresses the theme of the object the best. The ethereal cards, with a
grainy structure, express the fragile nature of the house of cards that can collapse at any
time.” The „Artists‟ prize was open to all glass artists regardless of experience and was
judged by Bob Leatherbarrow, a world-famous glass artist, based in Canada, who is holding a
masterclass at the Warm Glass UK headquarters in Somerset. Bob decided that Graeme
Thyer‟s „Charcoal Glass‟ piece was the best in terms of technique and artistry and chose it
from over 70 entries in its category. Graeme said: “I am deeply surprised my glass has
achieved something so honourable. After only working with glass for two and a half years it
shocks me how far I have come.” The final category was the „Bullseye Glass‟ group. Entries
in this category were to be made with Bullseye Glass only and the successful entrant was
Alison Lowry, winner of last year‟s Artists category. The „Bullseye Glass‟ category was
judged by Lani MacGregor, co-owner of Bullseye Glass, and Silvia Levenson, an
Argentinian glass artist who agreed that Alison‟s „Jack Fell Down‟ piece was the stand-out
winner. Alison said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been picked as this year‟s winner of
the Warm Glass UK Bullseye Glass Category. The winning piece, „Jack Fell Down‟ is part of
a larger body of work, and touring exhibition, entitled “Vessels Of Memory”. The piece was
created using pâte de verre and has been extensively sand carved.” The winners receive some
great prizes; Graeme won a highly coveted place on Bob Leatherbarrow‟s „Powder and
Crackle‟ Masterclass to be held at Warm Glass UK, while Dóra won a Paragon SC2 kiln,
donated by Paragon Industries. Alison was the delighted recipient of a flight to Portland,
Oregon, five-nights accommodation and a pass for the Bullseye conference BECon, all
donated by Bullseye Glass Company. Pippa Bluck, Warm Glass UK Director said: “The
standard of this year‟s entries has been astonishing, the judging has been so tough because we
had such great pieces to choose from. “This is the seventh year we have run the competition
and it seems to grow and grow all the time. It has become an esteemed award within the
industry and we‟re really proud to be able to offer a platform for the artists who enter.
“Graeme, Dóra and Alison all created fantastic work and we hope they enjoy their prizes.”

In an email from Duncan Timms he writes about a new glass gallery he is setting up at
Johansfors in Sweden:
The Gallery In Johansfors. The new Gallery occupies part of the space currently housing the
Kristallmuseum and shop in Johansfors Glasbruk, Sweden . Johansfors lies at the southern
end of Glasriket, “The Kingdom of Glass” in Emmaboda Kommun and is equidistant from
Växjö, Kalmar and Karlskrona. There are direct rail services connecting Emmaboda with
Copenhagen and Gothenburg, both of which have extensive airlinks.
The Gallery will specialise in the work of studio artists working with glass, with a particular
emphasis on international links. Building on the traditions of Johansfors Glasbruk, there will
be a special focus on engraved glass.
The Johansfors Gallery complements other venues in the area, including the new Glass
Factory in Boda Glasbruk, Smålands Museum, which houses a permanent exhibition of
studio glass produced by members of the Glasakademi, representing Swedish studio artists,
the showrooms of Orrefors Kosta Boda in Kosta, Orrefors and Åfors, Transjö hyttan, and the
Design School of Linné Universitet in Nybro. There is no equivalent gallery in Sweden
specialising in the work of studio artists on a transnational scale, but the programme of
exhibitions is designed to extend the activities planned in the Glass Factory.
The Gallery will work with a number of representative bodies, including Glasakademin and a
number of British groups, among them the Scottish Glass Society, the Guild of Glass
Engravers and the Contemporary Glass Society. The initial exhibitions, opening on 16/17
April 2011, will include glass works by a number of British artists, including Alison Kinnaird
M.B.E., James Denison-Pender, Junko Eager, Sally Fawkes and Richard Jackson. They will
also include etchings using a variety of media by Mila Furstova and work by several Swedish
artists, including Åsa Brandt and Astrid Gate.
