THE CLINICAL PRACTICUM
Throughout your program. you will meet with the Coordinator ofExternal Clinical Education(Coordinator) to discuss off-eampus clinical placements. Determination ofyour clinicalplacements will depend on your knowledge, skills, abilities, schedule and the geographiclocation of off-campus sites and their willingness to accept a student extern. Studentclinicians may expect to be placed in the on-eampus clinic for two semesters beforeconsideration ofoff-eampus placements. The Coordinator will make the initial contact toinquire as to whether an off-campus site is willing to supervise a student extern. Once the sitehas indicated willingness to supervise a student, the student will be offered the name andcontact information so that slhe may further discuss the placement and set up any neededpreliminary interview or site visit. Off-eampus sites may require you to undergo extraactivities such as criminal backgrOlmd checks, drug screenings, inoculations, and site-specificorientation and training. It is your responsibility to complete these activities in order to beplaced at the designated site.
Throughout the course ofstudies, student clinicians must complete a minimum of400clinical hours. The student must complete 25 hours of observation and 375 hours ofdirectclient contact. These clinical hours are to be achieved through a variety ofpractice settingswith a diversity ofclients. For all students. clinical supervisors will determine whensupervisees are able to move from supervised observation into supervised clinical servicedelivery. This decision will differ depending upon the knowledge and abilities of the studentclinician and the specific clinical procedures performed. Typically, coursework related to aprocedure must be concurrent or completed prior to clinical participation involving thatprocedure. All students will rotate through placements in the ECD Speech-Language andHearing Clinic and formally approved off-campus sites. Student clinicians may only attendsites that are approved by the Coordinator ofExternal Clinical Education for which a currentaffiliation agreement is in place.S When a student enrolls in clinical practicum, it is expectedthat the student will participate through the end ofthe designated clinical assignment (i.e.,typically the end of one or two semesters). Withdrawal from a clinical assignment would be arare circumstance that would usually require a determination following consultation with thestudent, supervisor. the clinic director and externship coordinator. The determination also
