Inrecentyearswehaveinvestedheavilyinourfacilities,includingourworkshops,studios,computersuitesandengineeringlaboratories,soyouwillfindthemamongsttheverybestavailableinanyuniversityintheUK,givingyouaccesstostateoftheartequipment,softwareandotherresources.

However,themostvaluableresourceyouwillhaveatyourdisposalduringyourtimeatSheffieldHallamisaccesstoourdedicated,experiencedstaff.ThetechnicalteamwithinACES,withitsprofessionallyqualifiedstaffandpracticingprofessionals,hasawealthofexpertiseacrossallareasofourprovisionandcomprisesengineers,scientists,designers,silversmithsandjewellers,fineartistsandmediaartsspecialists.Theteamarecommittedtousingtheirdiverserangeofskillsandknowledgetosupportpracticalaspectsofyourwork,whetheritisproducingacomplexengineeringprojectorcreatingdesignworkforaninternationalexhibition.

Youwillbeissuedwithfreeeyeprotectionforuseintheworkshops.Pleaseremembertobringthiswithyoutotheworkshops.

Theextractionequipmentistheretoprotectyou,butoccasionallytherewillbeaneedtowearadustmask.TheseareavailablefromtheMaterialsandToolCentre.

Whenhandlingpaint,someadhesives,andchemicalsyouwillberequiredtoweargloves.TheseareavailableintheroomswheretheprocessestakeplaceandfromtheMaterialsandToolCentre.

StudentandLearningServices(SLS)supportarangeofITlaboratoriesandotherITfacilitiesacrossallcampuses.SomeofthesefacilitiesarespecificallyequippedforACESstudents,manywithspecialisthardwareandsoftwareapplicationssupportingyourcourse/programmeofstudy.

AlthoughITteachinglaboratoriesareheavilytimetabled,ACESstudentsmayaccessthemforself-directedlearningwhennotbeingusedforformalteachingsessions.TheITteachinglaboratorytimetablesarepostedoutsideeachoftheindividuallaboratoriesandoncourseShuspacesites.

InadditiontotheACESspecialistITLaboratoriesthereisarangeofspecialistsoftware,groupworkandotherfacilitiesinEMBInformationWorks,theAdsettsLearningCentre,EMB3311,Owenlevel3EditSuites,andCantor9224.ManyofthePCsintheselocationscanbebookedincludingthosewithspecialistACESsoftware.DetailsofhowtobookPCsandgroupstudyfacilitiescanbefoundonShuspace.

ThereisalsoarangeofotherlaboratoriesacrosstheUniversitywhichhavemanyofthegeneralsoftwareapplicationsinstalled,pleaseseeSHUspaceformoredetailsoftheroomlocationsandavailablesoftware.

AlistofthesoftwareinstalledineachlaboratoryispostedoutsidetheITlaboratoriesandonShuspace.Forthe2014/2015sessionallsoftwareoperatesunderWindows7.Thesoftwareversionsthatyouwillbeusingarefixedforthestartoftheacademicsessionandmaynotbethemostrecentlyreleasedversion.Pleasebeawarethattheremaybecompatibilityissuesshouldtheversionyouareusingonyourpersonallaptop/computerbedifferenttotheversionsinstalledinuniversitylaboratories.
