Among a vast number of social networking sites present at this moment, the most popular ones among the users are •Facebook•Youtube•Twitter•Pinterest•Google+And recently, photo sharing social networking site Instagram is also attracting users.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY USE THESE SITES?

Facebook is, by far the most popular social networking site among the users. It crossed the 1 billion user landmark before any of its competitors.The next most popular one is the video sharing site Youtube.

WHY DO WE USE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES?

Social media are used to document memories, learn about and explore things, advertise oneself and form friendships. The communication through internet based services can be done more privately than in real life.

Networked individuals create, edit and manage content in collaboration with other networked individuals. This way they contribute in expanding knowledge.

The most important reason for social media to get this much popularity is we can communicate with people with much less effort and time.

USES

Social media can be used to make an impact on social and political environment. Due to its high reach, social media can be effectively used to raise awareness against different social problems.

Recently, social media has been used in the political uprising in the middle east.

MISUSES

Like everything else, social media can also be misused to create anarchy and chaos in the society.

People’s privacy can be very easily breached.

Social media can also be very addictive. In that case, we may waste huge time on them without any positive outcome.

HOW TO USE IT EFFECTIVELY

Using social media effectively is essential to take the most from it.

There are some basic rules which should be followed. * We should check the time we use on them * We should not involve in unnecessary debate with anyone

* We should have only our known people in our social media circle.
