Introduction
First, The Important Stuff Up Front
This songbook has been prepared for use by the Bergen County Acoustic Musicians, New Jersey meet-up group ( http://www.meetup.com/Bergen-County-Acoustic-Musicians/ ). The book includes songs we have sung at our meet-ups and will be periodically updated when songs are prepared for upcoming meet-ups.
What does this mean to you if you are not a member of the BCAM meet-ups? It might mean you should join our group for fun acoustic jams but we realize this may not be practical if you live in Belgium. So, if you are unable to join our meet-ups, you can still use this book for your personal or other use, including other meet-ups. Music is meant to be shared and we encourage you to share this book with others. The key word in the last sentence is share; this book is not meant to be sold.
If you do share this book we ask that you oblige us with our two requests: 1) do not remove any references to Bergen County Acoustic Musicians or BCAM and 2) we ask you to share the entire book, including this “Introduction”. A lot of hours have gone into preparing the songs, formatting the song pages and checking for correctness. All musicians love applause when we play and sing. Likewise, we also appreciate being acknowledged for the work and time put into adding songs to the book. (Sure, you can cut BCAM out of the introduction, but we trust our fellow musicians will not do this ------right???)
Copyright and Fair Use
A final note about copyright and “fair use”. The songs in this book have been put together for personal use and interpretation by BCAM’s members under “fair use” provisions of copyright law. No earnings are derived from the sales of this book or performances at BCAM meet-up jams where the book is used.
Most songs in this book are copyrighted by the writers, artists, publishing companies and/or recording companies and those copyrights are respected by the BCAM members when attending meet-up jams.
So, Who Is This Book For?
This book is for anyone who enjoys music. The songs in this book include lyrics and their guitar chords (with chord shape diagrams), prepared for the beginner to intermediate guitar player. Every effort is made to use the original key and chords as played by the original performers but in some songs we have altered the chord shapes to support the beginner and intermediate player.
How Is This Book Formatted?
The book was prepared in Microsoft Word 2007 and is formatted for MS-Word 97-2003 .doc format and MS-Word .docx format. A separate file exists for each format. The book contains a few formatting features for ease of use whether viewed at your monitor or printed.
Double-Sided Printing
This book was designed to minimize page turning when playing a song. To accomplish this, the book is meant to be printed on double-sided pages and stored in a binder. If you have a duplex printer that prints on two sides of a sheet of paper, then printing this book will be easy for you. If you do not have a duplex printer you can consult your printer manual to learn how to print on two sides of a sheet of paper. Optionally, you can print the book on the single-side of each sheet of paper (but this will double the size of the printed book).
Every effort has been made to reduce page turning when holding your guitar. Entire one page and two page songs require no page turning. For example, all two page songs begin on an even page number (the left page) and end on the odd page number (the right side). All single page songs are grouped in even-odd page number pairs to present two songs in the same view. That leaves us with songs of three or more pages. Multi-page songs that have an odd number of pages, i.e. 3, 5, 7, will always begin on the odd page. Multi-page songs that have an even number of pages will always begin on the even page.
Chord Colors and Styles
The default electronic posting of this book is designed for black laser and inkjet printing and reflects the song chords, above the lyrics, in black text. However, if you would like to print the songs’ chords in a different color and a few other text styles, this document includes the “Chords Color” style you can use to modify chord text.
To change the chord styles and colors follow these steps for MS-Word 2007 or later. Similar steps for MS-Word 97-2003 style changes should be referenced in the application’s Help File.
1. Right click on the “Chords Color” style box on the MS-Word home ribbon (or left click on the styles list and right click on the “Chords Color” style in the styles selection list) and select “Modify”.
2. In the “Modify Style” dialog box, select the chord color you would like to use and click “OK”. You can also change the text Bold, Italic, and Underline properties. You should not change any other formatting, including the font.
Note: If you want to view lyrics only without the chords above the lyrics, modify the chord color to white. This is a good way to learn how to play a song without having the chords as a crutch.
Fonts
All song lyrics and chords use the “Courier New” font. This mono-spaced font is used to align song lyrics with song chords and should not be changed.
Table of Contents and Index
This song book contains a Table of Contents and an Index to easily locate songs. When songs are added to the book they will be added to the end of the book and the Table of Contents and Index are regenerated without printing the entire book.
Updating Your Printed Book - Song Corrections and Additions
As songs are added to the book, only those songs have to be printed. Each version of the book will include updates to the Table of Contents, Song Index and previously printed songs and new songs added to the book. Directions for printing these page updates can be found in the book’s “Printed Book Updates” section.
The book update section will include the last page printed in the book’s previous version. You can determine which pages you will have to print by finding the last song page number in your printed book’s Table of Contents or the page number of the last song in your book.
What Else Do I Need To Know
We are not perfect. This book will probably have formatting errors, incorrect chords, incorrect lyrics, etc. in each book version. As we find those errors we will correct them and include the corrections in the book’s next version. We will not maintain errata notes on what is corrected but we will include the corrected pages in each version’s pages to be printed.
If you only view the book on your monitor, downloading the latest version of the book is all that is necessary to stay updated.
Anything Else?
Yes. Have fun! Play and sing, solo or with a group! Share your music and let others hear you!
