A suction line filter drier with an oversized liquid line filter drier is an effective means of system clean-up to protect a new compressor following a burn-out. ALCO suction line System Protectors installed near the compressor suction provide this pollution protection without causing excessive pressure drop.
Selection of a unit with a high pressure drop will result in reduced system capacity and a significant added operating period to overcome this loss.Such extended operation will add unnecessary cost to the owners periodic energy bill. The capacities shown here afford optimum system operating efficiencies.

Our unique transverse flow pattern utilizes the maximum filter surface area possible. This extra large surface area traps contaminants down to 10 microns and will main-tain the high flow capacity even after prolonged use. Inside this molded felt core is a desiccant blend of Activated Alumina and Molecular Sieves to effectively remove moisture and acids.
Based on both drying and flow capacities, the “TEE” type filter driers have a capacity rating of 10 tons on R-12 and 12-1/2 tons on R-22. Vibration resistance tests conducted by an independent laboratory proved these units are especially suited for the transportation industry. 500 P.S.I. working pressure and 2500 P.S.I. bursting pressure.

FILTER DRIERS
SPORLAN CATCH-ALL SEALED TYPEThe universal acceptance of the Catch-All Filter Drier is due to its unique molded porous core, consisting of a blend of highly effective desiccants. The quality features built into it assure years of service on any refrigeration system.
MOISTURE — The Catch-All Filter Drier removes moisture from the refrigerant by adsorbing and retaining it deep within the desic-cant granules. The CW line of Catch-Alls is designed for use with polyolester oils and features approximately twice the water capac-ity of a standard Catch-All.FOREIGN MATTER — The Catch-All Filter Drier will filter out scale, solder particles, carbon, sludge, dirt, or any other foreign matter with negligible pressure drop. Fine particles that would go through an ordinary strainer are removed down to a minimum size in one pass filtration. The large filtering area of the Catch-All Fil-ter Drier core permits it to collect a large amount of dirt without plug up.
ACID — The Catch-All Filter Drier is unexcelled in acid removal ability. The hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, and various organic acids are adsorbed and held by the desiccant in a manner similar to the adsorption of moisture. Tests have demonstrated that the Catch-All Filter Drier will remove over 10 times as much acid as the desiccant used in most driers. This ability, along with its
excellent ability to clean up the oil, is responsible for the excellent field performance in cleaning up severely contaminated systems.
OIL SLUDGE AND VARNISH — Even the best refrigeration oils break down to produce varnish, sludge, and organic acids. Only the Catch-All Filter Drier is capable of removing these products of oil decomposition.
SPECIAL APPLICATIONS — A special “HH” core Catch-AllFilter Drier is available to remove wax which frequently causes difficulty on low temperature Refrigerant 22 and 502 systems. For cap tube systems, use the C-032-CAP or CW-032-CAP Catch-All which has fittings suitable for attaching to any size capillary tube.
Remember…It’s not how much moisture you remove from a refrigeration system that counts, it’s how little moisture is left.

FILTER DRIERS
SPORLAN CATCH-ALL FILTER DRIERS
20Based on 86° F Liquid Temperature and a Refrigerant Flow of 4.0 pounds per minute per ton of Refrigerant 12; 3.1 pounds per minute per ton of Refrigerant 134a; 2.9 pounds per minute per ton for Refrigerant 22; 3.9 pounds per minute per ton for Refrigerant 404A; 4.4 pounds per minute per ton for Refrigerant 502; and 4.1 pounds per minute per ton for Refrigerant 507. Ratings in accordance to ARI Standard 710.
2120 drops = 1 gram = 1 cc.
22The filtration area is equal to the core surface area plus the large internal surface available for depth filtration.
NOTE: The variation in flow ratings of filter driers having the same size core and shell is caused by the difference in connection sizes used. For complete capacity and selection information see your Sporlan Wholesaler or write Sporlan Valve Company for Bulletin 40-10.
*As of this printing, ARI has not established an EPD for R-134a, R-404A and R-507.

FILTER DRIERS
SPORLAN CATCH-ALL CW SERIESNEW REFRIGERANTS,NEW OILS,NEW CHALLENGESSpecially designed to be effective with today’s new refrigerants, the CW Series averages twice the moisture capacity of a standard Catch-All Filter Drier and provides the proven contaminant removal qualities you expect from Sporlan.
MOISTURENew refrigerants and synthetic oils have forced users to re-evaluate the way in which they protect systems. The synthetic polyolester oils, also known as POE oils, have hydroscopic tendencies that readily attract and absorb moisture.
The CW Series is compatible with the traditional refrigerants, R-12, R-22 and R-502, and can be used for severe moisture problems.
ACID REMOVAL AND OIL CLEANUPWith the CW Series, you get a filter drier that not only adsorbs and holds moisture, but also handles acid and oil cleanup.
FILTRATIONThe design and strength of the CW core has not been compromised. The desiccant composition produces a filter of the same quality stan-dards expected from Sporlan.
A CORE TO MEET EVERY NEEDSporlan’s standard Catch-All core remains unsurpassed in its acid removal and oil cleanup ability.
A SPECIALIZED SOLUTIONSpecially designed for new refrigerants and oils, the CW Series core also fully meets compressor manufacturers’ stated requirements for alumina content.

CATCH-ALL SUCTION LINE FILTER DRIER SELECTION INSTRUCTIONS
Selection of the proper Catch-All Suction Line Filter Drier will depend upon the intended usage. Either the “Permanent Installa-tion with Cores” or “Temporary Installation Cores for Cleanup; Fil-ter Elements after Cleanup” column may be used. When the best possible system protection is desired, the “Permanent with Cores” column should be used for selection. These recommen-dations are made on the basis of a low pressure drop, and as a result the cores can be left in the shell for maximum drying and acid removal when the system returns to normal operation deliv-ering its full rated capacity.
An alternate selection that is satisfactory and less expensive is to install cores temporarily for cleanup, and then remove these cores and install filter elements after cleanup. Because of the
larger system capacity, the pressure drop through the temporarily installed cores will be somewhat larger than normal, but still within the limits specified in the table on the previous page. After the cleanup is complete, the use of filter elements will assure a minimum pressure drop when the system is in normal operation. The low pressure drop through the filter elements assures maxi-mum energy savings during normal operation. Cleanup of the system can be accomplished with either the standard core (RC-10098) or the charcoal core (RC-10098-HH).
For complete description of the suggested system cleanup pro-cedure, request Bulletin 40-10.

FILTER DRIERS
SPORLAN CATCH-ALL SUCTION LINE FILTER DRIER RECOMMENDATIONSSIGNIFICANCE OF THE TYPE NUMBER
The letters and numerals in the Catch-All type number each have a significance. The “C” indicates Catch-All, and “CW” indicates the High Water Capacity Catch-All. The FIRST TWO OR THREE DIGITS indicate cubic inches of desiccant. The LAST ONE OR TWO DIGITS indicate fitting size in eighths. For sealed models, a “-S” following the last digit indicates solder fittings, and NO LETTER indicates a flare fitting. Replaceable core models (C-420 and larger) only have solder connections and the “-S” is omitted. Examples are: C-083 is 8 cu. in. and 3/89 flare, C-309-S is 30 cu. in. and 1-1/89 solder, C-19213 is 192 cu. in. and 1-5/89 solder.
Other suffix letters indicate special qualities. For example:“-T” indicates a pressure tap consisting of a Schrader type
access valve on the inlet end of the Catch-All.“-HH” indicates a charcoal style core for wax removal and cleanup
after a hermetic motor burnout.“-F” indicates a female flare outlet fitting with a male flare inlet
fitting.“-FM” indicates a female flare inlet fitting with a male flare outlet
fitting.“-CAP” indicates a Catch-All particularly designed for installation
on capillary tube systems.
REPLACEABLE CORES AND PLEATED FILTER ELEMENTS — ORDER SEPARATELYCores for replaceable core type filter driers are molded of exactly the same desiccants that are used in the popular sealed filter driers.Cores are individually packed in metal cans, fully activated, and her-metically sealed against moisture and dirt.Filter Elements are dried and packed in individual sealed metal cans. This method of packaging prevents the element from picking up moisture from the atmosphere. The method of mounting the cores or filter elements on the end plate by means of tie rods makes them very easy to install and remove. Detailed instructions are printed on each can. Each can contains a “triple gasket” consisting of a new end plate gasket, an end plate gasket for certain competitive filter driers, and a core gasket where desired. See the specifications on Page 23 for the number of cores required for each type drier.RC-4267 — Activated Core — Order as separate item — Fits ONLY shell types C-R424, C-R425, and C-R427.RCW-42 — High Water Capacity Core — Order as separate item — Fits ONLY shell types C-R424, C-R425, and C-R427. Designed spe-cially for use with POE oils. This core should be used on systems that have a ruptured water cooled condenser, or that have been exposed to the atmosphere, or for some reason have a high amount of moisture in the system.RC-4864 — Activated Core — Order as separate item — Fits types C-480 thru C-19200 Series Shells. This is the standard core suitable for most installations in the liquid or suction line.RCW-48 — High Water Capacity Core — Order as separate item — Fits types C-480 thru C-19200 Series Shells. Designed specially for use with POE oils. This core should be used on systems that have a ruptured water cooled condenser, or that have been exposed to the atmosphere, or for some reason have a high amount ofmoisture in the system.
RC-4864-HH — Activated Charcoal Core — Order as separate item — Fits types C-480 thru C-19200 Series Shells. This core should be used for wax removal on low temperature R-22 and R-502 systems, and for cleanup of systems that have had a hermetic motor burnout.RPE-48-BD — Filter Element — Order as a separate item — Fits types C-480 thru C-19200 Series Shells and Replaceable Suction Filter (RSF) Shells. This element should be used in RSF shells installed in the suction line to obtain the lowest possible pressure drop. In cleaning up a system after a hermetic motor burnout, cores should be used first. Then after the system is thoroughly clean, this filter element can be installed in the RSF shell.RC-10098 — Activated Core — Order as separate item — Fits types C-30,000 and C-40,000 Series Shells. This core has a high water capacity and should be used on all standard liquid and suction line applications.RCW-100 — High Water Capacity Core — Order as separate item — Fits types C-30,000 and C-40,000 Series Shells. Designed spe-cially for use with POE oils. This core should be used on systems that have a ruptured water cooled condenser, or that have been exposed to the atmosphere, or for some reason have a high amount of moisture in the system.RC-10098-HH — Activated Charcoal Core — Order as separate item — Fits types C-30,000 and C-40,000 Series Shells. This core should be used for wax removal on low temperature R-22 and R-502 sys-tems, and for cleanup of systems that have had a hermetic motor burnout.RPE-100 — Filter Element — Order as a separate item — Fits types C-30,000 and C-40,000 Series Shells. This filter element should be used in the same way as the RPE-48-BD installed in the RSF shell.
HH STYLE CATCH-ALL FOR WAX REMOVALU.S. PATENT NUMBER 3,407,617
Small amounts of wax are often a problem on low temperature Refrigerant-22 and Refrigerant-502 systems. Even well engi-neered systems frequently contain minute quantities of wax which are sufficient to clog expansion valve screens or cause sticking of the valve. Sporlan has developed a special blend of desiccants including activated charcoal which removes small amounts of wax in the liquid line before this wax can cause trouble at the expansion valve. These Catch-All Filter Driers have been very successful in correcting trouble jobs in the field.By installing HH Style Catch-All Filter Driers in the liquid line of all low temperature Refrigerant-22 and Refrigerant-502 systems these wax problems can be entirely prevented. In addition to their wax removal ability, these filter driers will remove all of the other harmful contami-nants that the standard filter driers remove. The following Catch-All Filter Driers are available with the HH core to meet the needs of low temperature systems. For dimensions, refer to the specifications for standard filter driers or consult Bulletin 40-10.

PARKER STEEL SUCTION LINE FILTER DRYERS — “The Original SLD”Parker Hannifin developed and introduced the solid-core clean-up dryer for use in a system suction line. The compact design incor-porates a large outside diameter shell, which results in a shorter lay-in length, and a larger core, which provides a greater filtration area for maximum operating efficiency.
The core material has controlled porosity which effectively removes and holds a maximum amount of contaminants with a minimum of pressure drop. In addition, the core material collects and holds inorganic acids and other harmful contaminants present after a motor burnout. The special binding process pro-tects the core from acid decomposition.
Access valves on both the inlet and outlet sides make it easy to measure pressure accurately. Occasionally, enough contaminant matter may collect in the filter core to cause a slight pressure drop. The access valves on the SLD make it easy to determine if a pressure drop exists and to measure the amount of the drop.
Key Features and Benefits
• The original SLD®, solid core, activated alumina suction line filter dryer.
• High acid capacity.
• Low pressure drop — exceptionally high flow rates.
• Designed for system clean-up.
• 500 hours salt spray protection.
• Shortest system cut-out lengths allow installation in tight areas.
• Two access valves simplify pressure drop measurement.
• Flare or solid copper sweat fittings.
• UL listed — File No. SA3441. CSA listed LR46423.

FILTER DRIERS
PARKER REPLACEMENT DRYER SHELLS AND FILTER CORESParker replacement filter cores and dryer shells are designed to provide flexibility over a wide range of applications. All models are designed for use in both theliquid and suction line of refrigeration or air conditioning systems. In single or multiple-core applications, cores may be loaded individually for ease of installa-tion in tight spots. A wide range of fittings for suction-line applications and inter-changeable laying-in dimensions with other manufactured models increase product versatility.
A new design of the internal assembly provides the advantage of using the Parker PFE-48BF filter element, which removes solid contaminants such as cop-per oxides, chips and other metal fines. The new design is also suited for using Parker dryer cores such as the Z-48 or the PCK-48HH, which provides removal of moisture, acid, wax and oil/flux paste.

Oil Vapor Dryer SeparatorThe Parker Vapor Dryer Separator (VDS Series) removes contaminated oil from a system in addition to solids, acid and moisture. A 1/4″ SAE oil drain access fitting is located on the bottom to provide a continuous means of measuring the amount of oil removed from a system, thereby indicating the amount needed to be replaced. The VDS holds up to four ounces of oil and is reusable for up to 50 pounds of refrigerant, depend-ing upon contamination levels. For rigid or secure mounting, a side bracket is welded to the body. The VDS can also be hung from a mani-fold gauge set with the wire strap provided. A model is available withcoalescing element for improved oil separation.

OIL TEST KIT
ALCO ACID ALERT REFRIGERATION OIL TEST KITHow to Test Oil with the Acid Alert
1. Pour the solution from the small bottle into the large bottle. The bottom layer of this mixture will be purple.
2. Completely fill the small bottle with oil from the unit being tested. Do this immediately after the oil is removed from the crankcase, since exposure to air will contaminate the oil and result in a false test result.
3. Pour the oil into the large bottle and shake vigorously.
4. Wait two to three minutes. A phase separation will develop as the oil rises to the top of the mixture and an aqueous layer forms on the bottom.
How to Read Results of the Acid Alert Test
After the phase separation develops, if the bottom layer of the mixture turns pink to clear, the oil being tested is contaminated with acid. If the Acid Alert Test indicates that oil is contaminated, the system should be cleaned up by means of an oversized liquid line filter drier and a suction line filter drier. If the bottom layer of the mixture remains purple, the oil being tested is not contami-nated with acid.
The Acid Alert Test provides a positive indication that the acid level in the oil being tested is either safe or unsafe. There is no need for marginal judgment readings.
The Acid Alert is an inexpensive, disposable refrigeration oil acid test kit that is a highly accurate service tool providing a conve-nient means for determining when the concentration of acid in the refrigeration oil has reached an unacceptable level.
There is no need to make marginal judgment readings when using the Acid Alert Test Kit. The test provides a positive indica-tion of whether the acid number of the refrigeration oil is safe or unsafe.
CAUTION: DANGER! Toxic, flammable, test solutions contain toluene and methanol. Vapor harmful. Harmful if swallowed. Avoid breathing vapor. If swallowed, call physician. Do not induce vomiting. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
NOTE: U.S. Postal regulations prohibit mailing of flammable sol-vents by air or parcel post.
How the Phase II Test Works
The concentration of acid in refrigeration oil is expressed as an acid number in mg KOH per gram of oil (milligrams of potassium hydroxide per gram of oil). The acid number is a measure of the amount of hydroxide solution needed to neutralize the acid in the oil. The more acid there is in the oil, the more potassium hydrox-ide is needed to neutralize it, and so, the higher the acid number.
In the Acid Alert Test, an acid number of 0.05 mg KOH per gram of oil has been set as the maximum acceptable acid concentration for refrigeration oil. Oil with an acid number less than 0.05 mg KOH per gram of oil is acceptable and will cause no change in the color of the acid indicator. Oil with an acid number of 0.05 mg KOH or greater per gram of oil will cause the acid indicator to change from purple to pink or clear indicating that the oil iscontaminated.
Using the Acid Alert with Inhibited Oils
Many inhibited oils contain additives or inhibitors that tend to react like an acid when tested with the Acid Alert Test Kit. Even when these oils are new, the additives may cause the Acid Alert Kit to indicate the oil has an acid number of 0.05 or greater.
Unsatisfactory results found when testing inhibited oils with the Acid Alert, do not necessarily mean that these oils are contami-nated or unsuitable for use in refrigeration equipment. The results merely indicate that these oils contain additives which react like an acid-making the Acid Alert Test Kit results invalid. Refer to the following list of inhibited oils to determine those which can or can-not be tested with the Acid Alert Test Kit.
The Alco Acid Alert Refrigeration Oil Test Kit is convenient, accurate, and simple. It contains two bottles and a four-step
procedure to provide consistent test results. The phase separation provides a positive color change regardless of the
color or condition of oil. Each kit contains everything needed to conduct one test. When in doubt, use the ACID ALERT KIT!

Testing R-11 and R-113 Refrigerant
Most of the inhibited oils which cannot be tested with the Acid Alert Test Kit are used in centrifugal systems. However, the Acid Alert Test Kit can be used to check for excessive acidity in centrif-ugal systems using R-11 or R-113 Refrigerant, even if oil in the systems cannot be checked.
The following procedure should be followed when testing R-11 or R-113 Refrigerant:
1. Pour the solution from the small bottle into the large bottle. The bottom layer of this mixture will be purple.
2. Completely fill the small bottle with refrigerant from the unit being tested. Do this immediately after the refrigerant is removed from the compressor since exposure to air will contaminate the sample and give a false test result.

3. Pour the refrigerant into the large bottle and shake well.
4. Immediately after shaking, loosen cap carefully to relieve pressure. Wait two or three minutes. When testing R-113, a normal phase separation will develop as the refrigerant rises to the top of the mixture and the aqueous (color-indicating) layer forms on the bottom. When testing R-11, the color-indicating layer will form on the top.
5. If the color-indicating layer:Stays purple — the refrigerant is satisfactoryTurns light pink to clear — the refrigerant is contaminated
If contamination is indicated, necessary steps should be taken to free the system from contamination. Consult the equipment main-tenance manual for specific instructions.
