SNMPv2c

SNMP v3 (RFC 2261-2264)

Use UDP Port 161 (requests/responses),162(notifications)

SNMP is a tool (Layer 7 protocol) that is the application layer protocol used by SNMP agents and managers to send and receive data. Allows for remote and Local management of items on the network including servers, workstations, routers, switches and other managed devices.

SNMP ComponentsSNMP Components

SNMP Manager: An SNMP manager is an application program that contacts an SNMP agent to query or modify the database at the agent, for example, D-View6 NMS.

SNMP Agent:SNMP agent is software that runs on a piece of network equipment (host, router, printer, or others) and that maintains information about its configuration and current state in a database

MIB:Information in the database is described by Management Information Base(MIB), MIB is likes a map of the hierarchical order of all managed objects and how they are accessed.
