Fire Safety Requirements

• The University has to meet legal requirementsfor fire safety. The University EmergencyManagement Plan provides theserequirements. In order to meet therequirements goals have been setthat each department and campuscommunity member must achieve.These goals are outlined in theproceeding pages.

UAH Building Emergency Hierarchy

• In each building there is a Coordinator foremergencies. The Building Coordinator isappointed by the applicable Vice President orDean or other Department Head asdetermined by the EmergencyManager.

• The coordinator appoints floor captainsfor each department in each building or asnecessary.

Building Coordinator

Goal -Insure a framework is in place foremergencies in each department forthe building that you have beenappointed as Coordinator.

Building Coordinator Responsibilities• Become knowledgeable of procedures in theUAH Emergency Management Plan

• Designate Floor Captains for specific areas andinsure they have educated themselveswith UAH Emergency Procedures andPowerPoint presentations. Brief themas necessary

• Determine a date for drills with theOEHS Coordinator and a location forthe post drill meeting

Building Coordinator Responsibilities (Cont’d)

• Communicate drill dates and emergencyinformation to Floor Captains

• Upon notice from the UAH PoliceDepartment provide the all clear toFloor Captains to re-enter the buildingor provide notice and information asreceived from the EmergencyManagement Group

Floor Captains

Goal -

Insure employees in assigned areas areaware of UAH emergency proceduresand are knowledgeable ofresponsibilities during emergencies

Floor Captain Responsibilities

• Brief visitors and new employees on UAHEmergency Procedures upon first arrival tocampus and annually thereafter. Provideemergency procedure/evacuationroute/assembly area information tofaculty and staff

• Insure preplanning is coordinated fordisabled persons. Disabled personsshould be taken to a safe area duringevacuation. Safe areas are stairwaylandings (keep doors closed as muchas possible when evacuating)

Floor Captain Responsibilities (Cont.)

• Direct people out of the building andto the assembly area

• Document and report those who refuse toevacuate on the Fire Drill Evaluationform

• Account for persons from your areaat the assembly area to the best ofyour ability

Floor Captain Responsibilities (Cont.)

• Receive the all clear and or furtherinstruction from the BuildingCoordinator

• Provide the all clear to re-enter thebuilding to faculty, staff andstudents in your assembly area

• Attend the Post Drill Meeting tosubmit evaluations and todiscuss how to improve the drills

Staff

Goal -

Safely and calmly direct yourself, students, andvisitors out of the building

Staff Responsibilities

• Brief visitors and new employees onUAH Emergency Procedures uponfirst arrival to campus

• Never assume an alarm is a test

• Leave the building immediately

• Close your office door

• Walk, don’t run, keep calm

• Always use stairways; do not useelevators

Staff Responsibilities (Cont.)

• If you assisted a person to a safe location,immediately upon exit notify a professionalemergency responder, then proceed to theassembly area

• Find your Floor Captain at theassembly area

• Do not leave. BE ACCOUNTED FOR

• The all-clear and permission toleave and further instruction willbe provided by the Floor Captain.

Faculty Responsibility to Studentsand Visitors

Goal -Safely and calmly direct yourself, students, andvisitors out of the building

Faculty Responsibilities

• Familiarize yourself with emergency plans,procedures and evacuation routes

• Provide emergency information/exit routes/assembly areas to students at the

beginning of each semester

• Insure disabled persons haveassistance getting to a safe area

- Safe areas are stairway landings (keep doorsclosed as much as possible when evacuating)

Faculty Responsibilities (Cont.)

• Immediately evacuate classroomsupon hearing fire alarm. Treat all alarms asreal

• Direct students and or visitors tocalmly and safely exit the building

• Close the door when the room isempty

• Always use stairways;do not use elevators during emergencies

• If a person was assisted to a safe location,immediately upon exit, notify a professionalemergency responder of his/her location, thenproceed to the assembly area

• Find your Floor Captain at theassembly area

• Account for your students and visitorsat the assembly area.

• Make your best effort to keep studentsand visitors at the assembly areauntil further notice from theFloor Captain
